Star Trek 2 boldly going...to get pushed back six months

05.25.2011by:

Set your phasers on "not-stunned" - after numerous internal delays, Paramount is set to push back the release of STAR TREK 2 from June of 2012 to December. The good news? JJ Abrams looks ready to confirm that he will, indeed, return to direct the film (hardly a sure thing seeing how easily he passed off the reigns on MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 4 to pal Brad Bird). But it's Abrams' interest in directing that looks to cause the delays.

Writer Roberto Orci told TrekMovie.com that he, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof have a 70-page treatment for the sequel but that Abrams has yet to even read it. This is likely due to the fact that Abrams has, oh, about ten thousand other projects he's working on, most notably SUPER 8, which releases next month and will be heavily leaning on Abrams to help promote.

Speculation has quickly turned to the notion that the ideas that have been bouncing around for a sequel just aren't all that great and Abrams has been putting off TREK because he wants to devote some serious time to blowing it up and starting from scratch. (This may also prove difficult as Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof are busy in their own right.)

It may be frustrating for TREK fans to have to wait a little longer but it's this or rush a sequel into production and you wind up with something like REVENGE OF THE FALLEN...

Hey I can wait..

We got The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man and The Avengers already coming out next summer. That's pretty packed, and it'll be nice to look forward to something later in the year.

Not to mention the revenues will be much higher without the heavy competition

Make it happen!

Everyone keeps preaching "Quality" but the previous article said the writers are done and just waiting on ideas & feedback from Abrams. To me it sounds like a quality script is just sitting there waiting to polished. I'm just surprised they aren't jumping on this or that the studios isn't pushing for it.

dats always been my major pet peeve with hollywood is rushing sequels period, yes fans want more movies but done right, i mean we have had 3 transformers movies in 4 years & they always rush out the comic sequels & look how it affected the spidey franchise, we already have a reboot. Smart move to not rush out to make Star Trek 2 as even i enjoyed it & im not even a trekkie.

Not exactly

While it is very likely that the movie will get pushed back, it isn't certain yet. The Deadline article is very much speculation based on the fact of there not being a script and Abrams not having worked on it yet. There still has been no confirmation yet from Paramount. Let's not take other sites' speculation and write it as fact just yet (however likely that it will be delayed -- which I'm fine with)

What's the big deal? Taking the time to do something better is never a bad idea. I have even more faith that they'll get this one right. Remember when Marvel was going to release Thor in 2010? They rightfully pushed it back to give everyone the right amount of time to do it right. Besides, the summer of 2012 is no place to stumble in to with a half-ass project.

I just hope this doesn't turn into another non-existent sequel like Sin City 2.

A Star Trek shall lead us

Star Trek is somewhat family fare. So, a Holidaytime release is a good idea. Also, Man of Steel premieres in December, 2012. We sci-fi geeks might get a royal fix. And, Oscar contenders play in December cinemas. A Star Trek film offers alternative and balance.

I only hope the final product will be as good as the first. Take all the time they like.

Quality over quantity. If this were like some other franchises, they would be at the second sequel already...

Quality

I think the script needs to be perfect and then they can move forward. I don't mind pushing the release date 6 months but if we start talking about 2-4 years that could be a problem.

Take all the time they need...

I'm guessing it'll actually get pushed back to Summer 2013 as that's the best option.
