Star Trek 2 set photos reveal some on set action with Spock and Uhura

Feb. 24, 2012by:

J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK 2 is currently filming and now we have some set photos to further tease us.  In the photos we see an altercation with Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the unnamed villain being played by Benedict Cumberbatch and then the resulting back up arrival of Uhura (Zoe Saldana) who is wielding a phaser gun.

Check 'em out:

Cumberbatch's role has been rumored to be that of Khan from the original STAR TREK sequel, WRATH OF KHAN, but it's not confirmed.  Plenty of speculation can reign now that we have a look at his character, who certainly doesn't have the appearance of the Ricardo Montalban Khan.  Interesting stuff.

I really enjoyed Abrams' STAR TREK and am looking forward to what he does with the sequel, lens flares and all.  He's one of the most consistent filmmakers working today and seems to have a real passion for delivering a great product.

STAR TREK 2 is scheduled to arrive on May 17, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: Am I the only one who finds it kind of hilarious that they "erased" the other Trek movies with J.J. Abrams film with the time travel scenario?

Wow: You missed the point!

JJ Abrams' Star Trek didn't erase the events of the previous movies. It actually preserved everything that happened before it. This Star Trek universe is simply an alternate reality with a different path that was created by the interference from Nero's ship. That is why this was considered both a sequel and a reboot: it follows the events of the original series but, because of the riff in time, it restarts a new universe. Nothing was erased.

Sorry, I am simply repeating what others already stated. I think the point was already well made.

Extra Tidbit: Yeah, probably. I don't see what's so ''hilarious'' about it. Doesn't even deserve a giggle. They simply created an alternate universe so they can take more liberties with future installments.

They didn't "erase" anything, it just hasn't happened yet. It'll be different, but certain events will probably still happen, including Kahn, eventually...

Why do so many people want Khan anyway?

He was a character portrayed iconically by Ricardo Montalban, in a movie classic. So why touch that, when you can go in a thousand different directions with Star Trek anyway. Especially with the new time line they created.

TOTALLY agree! I'd love to see Abrams take on Klingons

Not sure where all these Khan rumors are coming from, Abrams said over a year ago that he wasn't going to touch the Khan mythos. He doesn't seem like the type to lie to the fans.I agree with Commander 7's assessment. Gary Mitchell seems like a likely candidate.

Extra Tidbit: I suppose its better than "erasing" previous storylines by simply starting over which pretty much the rest of the reboots are willing to do.

Cumberbatch is...

Commander Mitchell. I'd put a fiver on it.

To me it makes sense, especially if he is resisting the Vulcan grip. In TOS, Commander Mitchell obtains god like powers, and is barely stopped in time. It also happens to be I believe the 3rd episode of Trek (but I think it was actually the 2nd one ever filmed). So his connection could be a clever way of tying it all together. To be honest, I'm surprised Mitchell hasn't been brought up as the possible villain more often.

Commander Mitchell, to me at least, just fits.

According to the Comic book Countdown written by the same people as the movies Star Trek is actually a sequel to Star Trek Nemesis as weird as it sounds. Its actually counted as Canon too. So the timeline didnt really erase anything but Nero created an alternate Timeline. If Nero didnt attack the ship Kirk's Father was on the timeline woulda resulted in TOS show but Nero attack on that ship resulted in the timeline being alterted I dont know what that means for TNG but according to Countdown

I love that the new Star Trek erased the original story lines, it gives more room for creative development in the story without the confines of continuity. yes the originals are mostly well-made films, but they have started showing their age in terms of special effects. strangely enough, i doubt we'll ever see a reboot with the crew from Next Generation, but i bet someone in Hollywood is sitting on that script thinking "maybe in 20 years..."

As a fan of all of the older star trek, I'm way excited for this. I think JJ Abrams did a fantastic job "re-inventing" star trek. It's about damn time they got a new one rolling in production. However the villian is, I dont care because its going to kick butt regardless.

Great pics but I've always wondered in a sci-fi world of such amazing tech, how come the away teams never wear body armor??? Thin shirts and slacks won't cut it.

Commander 7

Also, another point in favor of the Mitchell theory: Cumberbatch is clearly wearing the black starfleet uniform shirt under the jacket.

On the other hand, the writers and JJ said that the stories developed in the new comics wouldn't be used in the future movies, and the Gary Mitchell's story was its first arc.
So, logically, NO Mitchell...

Joblo breaks the story

The villain is Harry Mudd and his drug smuggling female sex slave racket. Only villain to appear twice in the original series.

Can't wait for this one...
Is it me or is Uhura aiming the phaser at Chekov in this second pic ?
The concept of the NEW TIMELINE is very smart because they can kill any character without breaking the continuity we know (if an actor become too expensive for instance). And I don't think Gary Mitchell will be the story for this one (too bad though) because they said that the stories used in the new comics would NOT be used in the next film and THIS was it's first arc. And Kahn would be sooo

It's Khan

Khan wore a cummerbund didn't he? Cumberbatch is wearing a cummerbund. Wish it was spelt Cumberband, that would have offer great alliteration opportunities.

I guess there's gonna be a fight scene on top of a giant, rusty machine in every Star Trek movie.
