Star Trek 2 will be Chris Pine's next film while script delays push back Paramount's Jack Ryan reboot

Mar. 29, 2011by:

Just when we thought screenwriter Steve Zaillian would swoop in to save Jack Ryan's day, Deadline is now reporting that the SCHINDLER'S LIST/CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER scribe has "had a change of heart" and withdrawn from the project in recent weeks.

While that may be a bummer for you fans of the Tom Clancy character, the good thing is that Paramount seems determined to want to make a worthwhile film. Deadline says "that an OK version of Ryan could have been put into production this year, but the priority is more about launching a new franchise then filling a release slot."

But if you've been pining for more Chris Pine this year (sorry, that was terrible), the good news is that STAR TREK 2 will now move to the forefront of the actor's schedule. Though it's not yet certain whether J.J. Abrams (SUPER 8) will man the Starship Enterprise a second time around (plus the script is still being written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Damon Lindelof), Paramount is expecting to begin production on the sci-fi sequel this fall to be able to make its projected June 29, 2012 release date. Yeah. Let's hope they take their own advice: "...the priority is more about launching a new franchise then filling a release slot."

I hope Abrams is involved in some capacity, his involvement in the first movie was what really sold me on it.

I'm more interested in how they will film STAR TREK, which is an FX heavy film, starting this fall and release it by June!

Good point. The first one was pushed back from Dec to whenever it came out, which gave them atleast 4 extra months of extra post-production, which would explain why the FX was so good.

Shelf Ryan forever. Star Trek 2 should be excellent. Chris Pine has started his career in a remarkable way. Bottle Shock, Star Trek and Unstoppable are ALL remarkably good films.

this is great news and correct me if I'm wrong but WHAT THE FUCK IS TAKING SO LONG? You relaunched a major franchise in a fun, engaging, exciting and revered way. This reboot is on par with Nolan's Batman movies in the fans' and critic's eyes. We want more trips from the Enterprise and it's perfectly cast crew.. so seriously.. get the fucking BALL ROLLING.

Go Trek 2!

I'm sure hardcore Trekkies had major problems with Abram's vision of Star Trek, but the fact is, it stayed close enough to the source material while being accessible to a new and less nerdy generation of fans. The seeds have been planted, it was a wonderful origins movie and Abrams should do the right thing, step the fuck up and do Trek II. 3 years is a healthy amount of time between franchise entries, but he really shouldn't wait any longer to get going on this project.

I was starting to worry we were going to have another Sin City on our hands with Star Trek. Glad to see that's not the case.

Trek

I'm a long time Trek fan, and if they make a proper Trek film this time, I'm down for it. The last film was just a string of Trek quotes joined together by action sequences. I mean, when Scotty is saying "I'm giving her all she's got!" he's just running through a brewery (I mean engineering) and he's not actually doing anything and apparently there's no actual engineering staff since that room was the most deserted on the Enterprise. But oh he said the quote, so I guess it was good.

Star Trek is launched. Paramount doesn't have to worry about an impactful launch anymore. It's launched. Therefore, they can move to the next phase, which is to fill a release slot.

However, let's hope they don't plan it that way. Star Trek was an unexpectedly awesome movie.

Trek excites me more, because Harrison Ford was the best Ryan, followed by Alec Baldwin.
