Star Trek 3 beams up Simon Pegg as co-writer

01.21.2015

Sorry to interrupt the return of Arrow, but we have some late breaking news tonight. Simon Pegg has been set to co-write STAR TREK 3! The Justin Lin directed movie needed its share of good news after Roberto Orci who was set to helm the movie exited. Pegg starred in both of the STAR TREK films from J.J. Abrams’s and is sure to be back again as Scotty a third time, now with the added responsibility of making us forget STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS ever happened. His writing partner on this one is Doug Jung (Dark Blue, Banshee).

Pegg has some pretty great work on his writing resume including the Edgar Wright-directed Cornetto trilogy consisting of SHAUN OF THE DEAD, HOT FUZZ and THE WORLD’S END. He also co-wrote the underrated gem RUN FAT BOY RUN.

STAR TREK 3 hits theaters on July 8, 2016.

"now with the added responsibility of making us forget STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS ever happened" Was it that bad? I enjoyed it.

Sounds good to me! Hopefully they try to write something original for this movie instead of trying to make their own version of a popular episode/movie of the original series.

Brilliant!

I loved both STAR TREK and INTO DARKNESS and bringing Simon Pegg on board to co-write STAR TREK 13 is good news indeed. The new film must not only serve as a third entry for the new cast, but represent the 50th anniversary of the original series. I can think of no other better suited to balance these two agendas than Pegg. He is a smart, witty, and talented writer and cares about the franchise and its rich history. Hopefully he will be able to bring a few members of the original cast along

After all, there would be no 13th STAR TREK film without the hard work and talent of William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Nichelle Nichols (would be awesome to see her as Uhura's mother), George Takei, and Walter Koenig. Go Pegg!

There remains a strong possibility this film won't be made. Bad Robot no longer has a production deal with Paramount going forward because they signed a deal with Sony. The crews were released to work on other projects until May or June. Paramount has rejected several scripts already, they haven't approved a budget for this film either. It's also very likely CBS is going to announce a new television series, in the prime universe very soon. I'm betting this movie doesn't get made, and if it

It'll be full of nods and winks so that Pegg can prove how big a fan he is. Some people will convince themselves that it was a brilliant movie because it referenced that time Kirk met Abraham Lincoln or that time Kirk fought a Gorn. Or that time he came under attack by aggressive "sand raiders" on that desert planet in a galaxy far, far away (wink wink WINK).

Personally I loved the previous two films. It worried me when Abrams moved away from the project, and whilst Orci perhaps wasn't the best choice to direct I was glad of his involvement to keep the next film in line with them.

In the same way I wouldn't have chosen Pegg to contribute as writer (his other films are far removed from the feel if these) but with him being a fan, and quite vocal when he doesn't like something, again I have hopes that his creative involvement will keep the film in

I admit to not having seeing Justin Lins work so am pretty neutral on his involvement at them.

In any case, regardless of who's writing or directing, I shall be there on opening weekend!

Like Pegg but...

the big wigs in charge don't take any care or pride in this beloved franchise and the quality of product released in the last few decades shows that clearly...
I also blame JJ... Will he screw around with Star Wars? No, because he loves it... He didn't love Star Trek so he didn't mind messing around with it and disappointing us that do and have done for many years...

I hope it will have a little less action, a bit more ethics, a little bit of comedy and more suspense. This is what was cool in the "old" Trek-movies.
I once read that the "old" movies sometimes felt like submarine-movies. A bit more of this would be great in this re-invention of Star Trek. And I really hope that the young crew can come up with it's own ideas to solve a problem, without calling old-Spock all the time.

They also should get rid of "beam me from earth to another planet" idea

They also should get rid of "beam me from earth to another planet" idea which makes starships completely obsolete.

Glad to finally hear some good news on the star trek front! I'm a big Pegg fan and i'm sure he'll do a great job writing his share. And as a life long trekkie, I agree that into darkness was a huge disappointment. It was disjointed, lacked almost everything you find in a star trek movie, the enterprise didn't fire a single shot, and they didn't even have the guts to wait to bring Kirk back in the next movie. Here's hoping the third one turns it around.

Love the news... but disagree with the dig at Into Darkness... i really loved the movie and just cuz you knew Cumberbatch was Khan didnt take away from its entertainment value. Really looking forward to the 3rd... hopefully Lin keeps the "feel" these movies have had!

Agree. From what I've read in most forums the whiners are usually spoiled fans who will never be happy unless everything is perfected to their idea of what it should be. I do agree with arguments that say 'so let's boldly go already!' but the entertainment was there in both films for me all the same. I thought they were thrilling and really rewatchable.

The guy's clearly a massive sci-fi fan so that's good news. I'm seeing visions of STAR TREK 4: THE VOYAGE HOME, though (not that it's necessarily a bad thing).

So this time, Uhura says, "Double dumb-ass on you!" ?

He's been good with more comedic scripts. I wouldn't have Pegged him to tackle a big blockbuster like this, but I can't complain.

Uh, I don't know how I feel about this. Writing comedy and writing sci-fi, serious sc-fi, is totally different and I don't know if he can do a good job with that...I'm not saying he can't. I just don't know is all.
