Star Trek Beyond's Sulu revealed to be gay in honor of George Takei

07.07.2016

Star Trek fan or no, we all love George Takei and his contributions to not only the Trek legacy, but to spreading awareness and acceptance in the faces of those who have frowned upon same-sex relationships. Yes, it's no secret that Takei is as gay as the day is long, and while the topic has never really been brought up as far as his character Hikaru Sulu goes, it looks like the senior helmsman will follow suit. In speaking with the Herald Sun, John Cho mentioned that Sulu will be revealed to be the father of a daughter with a same sex partner in STAR TREK BEYOND.

John Cho on Sulu's sexual orientation:

I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicize one’s personal orientations.

Star Trek has always presented audiences with a future society that strives to work towards universal acceptance in order to maintain peace throughout the galaxy. The shows, in particular, have done such a great job of whipping in a little message within the entertainment. While something like this comes as little shock (especially given the character), it's still a nice way to honor the original actor and his fight for equality.

STAR TREK BEYOND will open in theaters on July 22, 2016.

TO BOLDLY GO WHERE NOBODY CARES

Arbitrary and unnecessary. Go ahead and introduce a new gay alien or something but don't change Sulu against the wishes of George Tekei. -- Also, why does Hollywood think it has a moral obligation to teach me tolerance? Its common knowledge that Hollywood is full of well adjusted, moral people who are in touch with reality. They must know whats best. Thanks Hollywood for teaching me another valuable lesson about acceptance. (*cue 'the more you know' graphic and music)

Takei said himself though, that he's happy that there is an openly gay character, but that it's unfortunate that it's Sulu.

I was right

I wanted to make sure that everyone who flamed me knows George Takei himself agrees with me.

That's a pretty interesting article, kinda weird to not listen to Takei about it at all, then claim that it's to honor him.

I guess if you agree with Takei, you would be just fine with a gay character in Star Trek just as long as it isn't Sulu? Good to hear! I guess I misunderstood your biological imperative comment, but if you agree with Takei, you're very supportive of his lifestyle. Thank you for clearing that up! ;)

Instead of being 'to honor him', it sounds more like: 'you're gay, so the character you played and almost created probably is too, because, come on, a gay can't play a straight dude, everybody knows that !'

So I guess Demora Sulu was never born?

Even Takei says this is wrong. Maybe they should've got his opinion first

Do they want to Kill this Movie

There have been bad tidings about this movie for a while. The last one was disappointment, and now they are going SJW, first CP does a gun control video because of course the gun Killed all those poor people in Orlando not an Terrorist who pledged his loyalty to Isis. Now we have them doing a homage to George by making Sulu Gay. Really? Chekov was most likely go going Trans in the next episode, lucky Anton and Scotty was going to come out against Bretix from the Federation in a future one. I

I just want to go to the movies and enjoy a good story, some exciting action, good CGI and forget about the world going to hell for a couple of hours. The boxoffice has had some up and downs this summer, but alot of downs, especially with Sequels. I have a bad feeling this is going to be another disappointment at the boxoffice. I'm sure the take will be good over seas but everyone I know who talks about movies and Star Trek are saying their going to sit this one out, maybe rent it on Amazon or Vudu in the fall.

Anton won't be doing anything anymore since he sadly was died.
Other than that, paying homage to Takei by making this Sulu gay isn't going to affect anyone. It's a movie. Either enjoy it or don't watch it.

I know Anton's dead you dummy. I typed " was most likely", I assumed everyone who is a fan of Star Trek and of Movies knows he died, but obviously you don't get sarcasm. The luck for Anton was not having to play a tranny in space. Also George Takei says he is against it because it goes against Gene R's vision. I subscribe to George's Facebook page which though i don't agree with everything he posts and says, is funny. I don't have to agree with everything someone does or says to appreciate

The writer, directer and star are pushing SJW themes and I believe it will have negative effect on the boxoffice. I know I will not be seeing at the theater and most likely will wait till it's on netflix before I will see it.

Who gives a rats rear

This is going to make the movie SOOOOOOO much better now *rolls eyes* the fact that this is a deal actually sets the movement back if you ask me. Being gay is acceptable now. Why do we have to make a deal about someone's sexuality? Start treating people as individuals, not classifying them. That's what's actually progressive

Are you gay? Do you understand the "movement", as you call it? If not, please don't speak for us.

I am gay. My sexuality, is not a movement. My desire for equality and marriage rights was a movement. Those of us who wanted to adopt and raise children, that was a movement. The desire to walk down the street while simply holding my husband's hand without fear of violence, or insult, or cruelty - that is a movement.

The desire to walk down the street while simply holding my husband's hand without fear of violence, or insult, or cruelty - that is a movement.

Science supports the fact that sexual orientation and/or identity is not a choice. It is a naturally occuring biodiversity. Unfortunately, traditional societal prejudices whther based on religion, or just the general fear of "otherness" is rarely defeated by science. It IS however, defeated by movements.

It's called visibility. It's called normalization. Having Sulu be gay now is just as important as the mere existence of Uhura in ToS of the 60's. It may not be Gene's exact character sketch, but it is the purest essence of what he tried to do by creating Star Trek to begin with. He wanted to influence progressive social change in a pop culture entertainment format. He wanted to inspire, to tell stories of new heroes for a changing generation, he wanted to bring hope and joy and peace through his tales. How many young African Americans were inspired and thrilled by Uhura back them? How much hope, and acceptance, and change did that character help bring about?

If Sulu being gay inspires one kid to be who they are. If it changes one mind about gay people for the better. If it saves one life of a scared lonely kid, it's worth it.

That's so Takei!

A nice nod to George Takei and his contributions to making our society a more accepting, progressive place. I like it.

Hopefully STAR TREK: BEYOND is a good movie.

This is what George Takei had to say about it:

"I’m delighted that there’s a gay character," he tells The Hollywood Reporter. "Unfortunately, it’s a twisting of Gene’s creation, to which he put in so much thought. I think it’s really unfortunate."

At least somebody in Hollywood still cares about the creator's will.

Chris Pine trying to talk like William Shatner

I personally would prefer that Chris Pine just plays his own version of Kirk. The clip here feels like Pine is trying his hardest to channel Shatner's pauses in his line deliver. "Sulu (pause) you can (extended pause) fly this thing right?"

Suki DID have a wife and daughter

But Nero went back and killed Kirk's dad which sent off a chain reaction making Suki gay. And made Khan a white British guy...even though he was frozen like. 1,000 years before Nero arrived.

It's OK to be Takei

A little added depth to the character has been needed for a while now. Sulu was very 2D in the past movies, hopefully they give him something to do in this one.

It is forced, they're trying to add buzz by doing this. The fact was Takei did a great job and owns the character forever, regardless of whether or not the character is gay. It just wasn't a focus before, the shock was finding out that he had time to make a family at all in Star Trek Generations.

I usually hate when characters get retconned - turning a non-gay character gay is usually the work of a writer who wants to have good press - but I like this. Sulu was never confirmed to be hetero and it's very difficult to watch a character played by George Takei and imagine him as straight. Plus, it's perfectly in line with the ST universe.

The_ConMan - PLENTY of gay guys feel forced to ACT straight and do the "normal" family stuff. They even come out to their wives and they still live a "normal" married life just acknowledging that the guy experiences same sex attraction. There are plenty of creepy documentaries out there on SSA. I like the idea of honoring George and making Sulu gay because it adds a depth to him, he was nothing more than a cardboard character in the past two movies. Maybe they will give him something plotwise

yes I understand that, but it seems counter intuitive to the World of Star Trek. So now you are telling me in Star Trek a world where everyone, gay, straight, lesbian, transgendered, black, white asian etc....that Sulu was scared of it and hid in the closet and forced a marriage and a daughter? sorry it just rings of false. Its called Acting.

I don't know how canon the Star Trek novels are - just making a search on Demora gave me 2 different mothers - but I didn't really care about him having a daughter since it's very easy for gay men to have children, either by artificial means or by adoption.

That being said, a quick search did confirm that he used to be hetero so I was wrong about that. I'm still okay with it. The reboot is a different thing and the sexuality of Sulu was never explored as much as Kirk's. He could have been

JimmyArrow as someone with a brother and brother-in-law, I can tell you it is FAR FAR FAR from easy for gay men to adopt or get a seragate.
Also, so what if this Sulu is gay! The universe is already different. A simple ripple in time could have changed anything.

It's also ones biological imperative to find the same sex desirable over the opposite. I can't see myself with a guy but I can understand why my brother can't see himself with a girl (which he is married to a guy)
Plus the world can do with less humans polluting the planet.
You need to calm down a bit

Calm down. Being gay happens even in the animal kingdom. When rat populations grow big, a lot of rats become gay. Maybe it's nature's way of population control. Who knows, but being gay is 100% a natural phenomenon that happens across many species.

People need to calm down about the whole LBGT "everywhere" thing. Fact is, if you aren't gay, you're safer than they are. Giving exposure to diversity,

No shit, you basically contradicted what you are saying. There are no characters that come out and say "Hey I'm straight!"

But we HAVE to make sure that we show a gay character in their element, so we KNOW they are gay, put a spotlight on it. And now here comes the name calling. Just because I don't agree with you, I must be a baby. I could care less if someone wants to be gay, doesn't effect me. The whole point is putting this shit in the movie just so they can mark off

Do gay people actually watch movies and get mad after it's over and say "fuck this movie, there weren't any gay people in it! BOYCOTT!" I get it though, we don't want to offend anyone in the PC world we live in now. Go ahead, keep calling names. I'm waiting for the almighty racist, bigot, homophobe, misogynist, sexist insult that gets thrown around like candy today, because someone has a different opinion than YOU.
