Star Trek Into Darkness motion poster seeps in the creepy with Benedict Cumberbatch

Feb. 18, 2013by: Paul Shirey

I honestly hadn't paid much attention to Benedict Cumberbatch until recently, which may be the same for many of you.† The actor has been making his presence known in such films as Steven Spielberg's WAR HORSE, the British version of Sherlock, the upcoming voice of SMAUG in Peter Jackson's HOBBIT trilogy, and now as the main villain in J.J. Abrams STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS.† Billed as John Harrison and speculated as Khan or a number of other possibilities, one thing remains the same; Cumberbatch is awesomely creepy as the bad guy.† And that's just from the trailers!

Today, we have a look at a new motion poster for the sequel, narrated with the same intense creepiness that's been so prevalent in the trailers thus far.† The poster builds off of the original teaser and is worth a look just to hear Cumberbatch ooze his evil words.

Check it out:

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS is no doubt set to be one of the biggest films of the year and rightly so.† A tremendous cast, featuring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve, Anton Yelchin, Bruce Greenwood, and Peter Weller, round out a top notch production headed by J.J. Abrams, which promises to deliver the sci-fi thrill we're looking for this summer.† It's rare that you get a sequel you can count on.†

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS beams up on May 15, 2013 in IMAX 3D, then on May 17, 2013 everywhere else.

Extra Tidbit: Could you see Cumberbatch in a heroic lead role (outside British TV that is) or is he destined to be the bad guy?

Cumberbatch is a versatile and excellent actor, and should be on any film fan's radar. He's done some amazing work (mostly British, until recently). Some of his work is hard to find, or available to U.S. viewers in parts on YouTube, but you can find some good stuff on Netflix as well. He's starred as a young Stephen Hawking in 'Hawking,' as Vincent Van Gogh in 'Van Gogh, Painted with Words,' as William Pitt the Younger in 'Amazing Grace.' He also starred in 'To The Ends of the Earth,' which

He's starred as a young Stephen Hawking in 'Hawking,' as Vincent Van Gogh in 'Van Gogh, Painted with Words,' as William Pitt the Younger in 'Amazing Grace.' He also starred in 'To The Ends of the Earth,' which is excellent, as well as the near-future thriller 'The Last Enemy.' And, of course, created an iconic modern-day Sherlock Holmes (the first one) in the BBC/PBS Masterpiece co-production 'Sherlock.' Cumberbatch won an Olivier Award (Brit. equivalent of our Tony award) with Johnny Lee Miller for their alternating portrayals of Dr. Frankenstein and his Creature in Danny Boyle's 'Frankenstein.' It has had cinematic showings around the world, and I'm hoping that there'll be another round of them, as it's not available elsewhere. Coming soon: performances in "Twelve Years a Slave," and "August Osage County," as well as 'The Fifth Estate' (currently filming), in which he plays Julian Assange, and 'Absolutely Everything' from some of Monty Python's great comedic minds, which is in pre-production. Cumberbatch may be the finest actor of his generation. If you haven't seen him, I recommend that you check out his work. I don't think you'll be disappointed!

The villain is..

Garth of Izar. i can't believe this hasn't been figured out yet. He meets all the criteria, and if you read his bio on memory alpha it is basically the plot to the movie in synopsis.. [link]

It is. You've got a good point. It would make sense. Find out in May.

I still can't get over the fact that this is a Star Trek movie, yet it is about terrorism on earth... What happened to "Going where no man has gone before"? So far none of the movies in this rebooted franchise has done that.
