Star Trek's Bob Orci gives the fans a piece of his mind

Sep. 5, 2013by:

When anyone gives an opinion on a movie or television show, we don't expect to hear from anyone who actually worked on it. So there we are, freely expressing our feelings and then suddenly-- an actor steps in, a director steps in, or in this case, a writer.

After TrekMovie.com wrote an article on how to fix a broken STAR TREK franchise, Orci came in to share his feelings on the article as well as the fans who had given rather strong opinions on STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS and where the franchise was going.

Here's how it begins:

"I think the article above is akin to a child acting out against his parents. Makes it tough for some to listen, but since I am a loving parent, I read these comments without anger or resentment, no matter how misguided. Having said that, two biggest Star Treks in a row with best reviews is hardly a description of ďbroken.Ē And frankly, your tone and attidude make it hard for me to listen to what might otherwise be decent notions to pursue in the future. Sorry, Joseph. As I love to say, there is a reason why I get to write the movies, and you donít. Respect all opinions, always, nonetheless."

One fan going by the name "Ahmed" weighed in on what he thought would be best for the series, and gave that opinion that Orci respects. The writer then responded:

"Ahmed, I wish you knew what you were talking about. I listened more than any other person behind the Trek franchise has EVER listened. And guess what? Glad I did becuase it lead to 2 biggest Trekís ever. You think action and thinking are mutually exclusive. Ok, then. Pitch me Into Darkness. Pitch me the plot, and letís comapre it to other pitches. Go ahead. Letís see if you actually understood the movie. Tell me what happened?"

Someone then compared STID to RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARKÖthis is when Orci starts to get colorful:

"Shitty Dodge. STID has infinetly more social commentary than Raiders in every Universe, and I say that with Harrison Ford being a friend. You lose credibility big time when you donít honestly engage with the FUCKING WRITER OF THE MOVIE ASKING YOU AN HONEST QUESTION. You prove the cliche of shitty fans. And rude in the process. So, as Simon Pegg would say: FUCK OFF!"

Then he kind of apologizes:

"doní take me too seriously. if youíve been on this board for the lar 5 years (as I have beeb) you know that twice a year I explode at the morons. today, there seemed to be a congregation, so it seemed like a good time. you are the most listened to fans ever. That doesnít mean you will get is to do what you want. just means what I said: I listened. Then we decided, having heard as many opinions as possible. To paraphrase of one of my great and beloved heroes, George W. Bush, ďweíre the decidersÖ."

There's a fine line here, and this is me speaking out of honesty which is all I would ever want from anyone, also tact. Orci has to be the bigger person. Sure, it sucks when people are complaining especially if you put a piece of yourself into something. No one wants to be told what they've done wrong constantly. As you all have noticed, fans tend to quickly get up in arms about a certain movie or show that they have strong feelings about. It happens. We've all done it. But Orci is in a different position here. This kind of thing comes along with the territory, you either have to roll with the punches or learn when to pick your battles and do so in a different more thought out way.

Then again, that's just my opinion.

Extra Tidbit: Not the first time this has happened. To be fair, it was a little more restrained.

Wow, lost a lot of respect for this dude. First he says these comments don't bother him, then, out of the blue, just does a 180 and lashes out like a spoiled child.

Cash your cheque and move the fuck on.

Not sure how I feel about outcry from the film-makers & stars about what SOME fans thought. Part of me thinks it's justified because the movie is their labour of love--their baby--and people are desecrating their baby and making statements that aren't accurate (saying they're killing the franchise when they have given it new life, financially speaking). The other part of me--the larger part--thinks they got paid a stupendous amount of money to tell a fricking story so they should shut the fuck

Yikes.

I don't really care about what he said, but wow - he's a professional screenwriter, and those posts had worse spelling, grammar and punctuation than your average ranting internet troll. His spellchecker must be on warp speed!

What a fucking dick. I guess ticket prices and 3D surcharges have nothing to do with the "two biggest ever." They're mediocre films. The first one is much better than the second but it's hardly revolutionary. His self-congratulatory references to ST:ID's social commentary and its sophistication are hilarious. Okay

Make a good movie and you wont have to listen to this. STID, from a story standpoint, sucked on every level and mocked what came before it. Spock yelling Khaaaaaan was a laugh out loud moment. You had an entire universe and thousands of possible choices for the movie and you write a half ass reboot of wrath of khan? FU.

Success does not equal quality.

The PT tells us this much. Needless to say, Orci is obviously an arrogant bastard...and from here on in, I'll be avoiding his "work". How dare this sub-par writer act like his skill alone has generated something special...asshat, you remade Wrath of Khan - so STFU. Sure you've written some stuff that turned out to generate decent movies, you've also written some utter shite. Get over yourself, asshat.

That's not the point. They are paid to make a successful film. If they can make a successful film without it having to be good then more power to him because he did his job.

STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS was a fun ride, but

it wasn't a good STAR TREK movie. It took a classic sci-fi series with a lot to say, and turned it into just another action franchise. As many have already pointed out the film's other weaknesses, I won't go there. But this guy's reaction is over the top, especially considering how well the film did at the box office. You'd think a Hollywood writer would have a thicker skin.

Big deal, if he can't take the criticism than don't be a writer. That's the price you pay for putting your work out to the general paying public, everyone gets to criticize. Niki, you're 100% correct in that being a writer, actor, director tied to this movie they need to role with the punches. When they get up in arms against the fans of the property they risk alienating the people that will make the next movie another success as well.

I didn't read the article Orci was talking about, but

I didn't read the article Orci was talking about, but he comes off very petty in his comments. Also, I didn't think STID was a bad movie plot wise. It was a bad movie because it was riddled with plot holes and bullshit exposition to explain away those plot holes. His concept was excellent in fact, the fact that he was unable to turn that concept into a concise and well thought out narrative speaks more to how poor of a writer he is. But this too is just my opinion.

Not cool. People at this level in Hollywood should just sit back and be happy that their film does well. I could understand if this was a flop and he was upset about that, but to complain about criticism over a film that is actually doing well? That's just bad form. If you're behind these successful films, you don't need to voice your opinion like this. You're already a successful filmmaker. There will always be complaints, that doesn't mean you have to take them to heart.

But was it as good as Wraith of Khan or JJ's first Star Trek? Not at all. Orci should just keep quiet and not feed the fire here, he is not helping.

All they did with these 2 movies is inject one action sequence after another, and call it a star trek movie because they're flying around in the enterprise. I agree with the people that have said it might be a good action movie, but it never felt like a star trek movie to me, and I've been watching them since I was a little boy. To me, it was a very watered down version of one. They made a movie to make money, and that's it. There was no heart behind it at all.

Really? Why would he even give into these people and lower himself to their standards? He just took himself down a few notches in my book. Also Trek will never be on the same level as a Indiana Jones movie!....ok maybe Crystal Skull but that's not saying much.

With a franchise like this, with a long history and passionate fans, there is never going to be a way to please everyone. The same thing will happen with the new Star Wars movies, I guarantee it. Anyway, I think the biggest issue seems to be that Star Trek used to be more sci-fi, and now they are action adventure. This gives them more mass appeal, but they don't really make you think as much. I still like the new movies, but when you're third act of the newest movie is just a reboot of one of

The single most disappointing thing about STID was that it was mediocre in every way. The action scenes were not captivating, the dialogue was pointless and added nothing to a script that sorely needed either more style or more originality or both, and you could just sense that some honcho thought it sounded like a good idea to rape Wrath of Khan. They just didnt pull it off. I understand bringing Khan to the masses, but they totaled warped the entire essence of that story...and they didn't

The scene where Spock cries and steals Kirk's line from the original is painful to watch. Just...disappointing. Orci...if STID was your best pitch, then they are in serious need of some more talent. Someone with inspiration. This guys sucks

Show some restraint...

First of all who the hell is Bob Orci??? Second of all, if he should feel the need to explain to fanboys why his latest "blockbuster" movie is worth their time after the fact he's doing it wrong. I'm starting to get tired of all these directors back tracking on scenes they intentionally included in their own damn movies and overpaid actors loosing their minds defending movies people have the right to hate.

What an idiot / asshole

We are the amateurs here...being stupid and childish is what anonymous posters on the internet do. Being a professional screenwriter, he ought to stay off the 'net or at least learn to rise above petty vulgarities. He did nothing useful, but did some pretty significant damage to the reputation of the franchise by going off like that. If I were his boss, I'd fire him.

Orci has done this before. He's a mediocre writer with thin skin, and for some reason thinks it's a good idea to surf internet boards with anonymous people who have nothing better to do than whine about a popular, well-respected movie.

Seriously, he's an idiot for engaging with idiots. Nobody here to like or dislike. They're all morons.

MAJOR SPOILERS:

STID I would say was reasonably fun up until the last five minutes. Killing a main character and bringing him back 5 minutes later is not only a really cowardly thing to do as a filmmaker but also a really stupid thing to do and makes the stakes and consequences of the film absurdly irrelevant. Also his sacrifice means shit if you're just going to bring him back a couple scenes later.

For me, this single decision ruined an otherwise fine film, in my opinion. Orci is

Orci is over-reacting here and the only explanation I can understand is that he knows inside that this movie was a dissapointment. If he was so confident that the film was a success he wouldn't care what some Internet low-life thought.

Well said! There's a reason why Wrath of Khan is considered a classic, and the original movies have stood the test of time. As Sarek said at the end of Search for Spock, Kirk sacrificed his career, his son's life, and risked his own life to bring Spock back. STID was just a bunch of meaningless bubble gum histrionics.

So yeah, I honestly enjoyed STID, it wasn't the best movie of the year but I think all the fanboys jumping on the hate bandwagon is a little much, especially those calling it the worst Trek ever, it's by far better than at least a couple of the older ones. I like hearing screenwriters speak out because they're silenced/pushed aside by studio execs really often. Does it kinda sound petulant? Maybe. But is he lashing out and going all diva-like? I don't think so. I don't think all the backlash against NuTrek is completely warranted. It's something very different but at the same time, it's opened up what has been viewed by the public as "dorky" franchise to a new audience and done something very cool with it. I like NuTrek a lot.

For some reason I thought Orci had worked on lost. He didn't.. Looking over his filmography another explanation for his behavior is that he's frustrated that he's never really written anything good other than the first Star Trek movie and can't understand himself why he makes millions of dollars.

My only problem

I loved both of the Star Trek movies and a huge fan of TOS. My only problem with the movies is that there was too much LT. Uhura and not enough McCoy. They should have kept honoring that trio of Kirk, McCoy, and Spock. Plus in into the Darkness kind of made McCoy into a parody of who the character really was.

That said...I hope they don't ridicule my thoughts in the process. :o) There's a reasons films like STID, MoS and Iron Man 3 have the fans so divided - and the people behind these movies should never dismiss the onesí who had issues with those movies in the way that has been done here. I know some posters can be real idiots about how they put their points

I know some posters can be real idiots about how they put their points across...but in my case...I felt seriously let down by MoS and wouldn't appreciate having my opinions dismissed in such a fashion. Making loads of money doesn't mean a film is great...just look at the second set of Star Wars movies or Spider-Man 3.

There are people who write these movies

and they are probably proud of themselves. Whenever we bad mouth movies we piss somebody off so we need to be constructive. Star Trek Into Darkness was not a bad movie. Catwoman was a bad movie: too much unnecessary CGI, The Star Wars prequels also had scenes in which everything on screen was CGI and that's boring. Green Lantern also suffered from too much CGI, They should have used practical makeup instead. Hopefully Guardians of the Galaxy will be better. See? It's not hard. There

I still don't get the hate for Into Darkness. I grew up on the original series, saw all the films, watched all the shows and I loved it. I loved that they didn't ignore that Khan would still be around even with the timeline change. He was WAY before that. He would have eventually been found anyway, he was just found sooner and things went down sooner and slightly different. Isn't that the whole point to alternate universes/timelines? Sometimes the same things happen just slightly different?

Sometimes the same things happen just slightly different? Look at the Flashpoint Paradox. A mugger STILL went after the Waynes, but this time Thomas Wayne lived and became a different type of Batman. This was basically the same type of thing. I am very happy I am not one of those fanboy/girls who just can not accept change.

Because some people are useless idiots with nothing better to do with their lives than imagine how a movie is "supposed" to go, then be angry about it when the writers & director decides to do something different.

Never been into the trek films before the last two and I loved them. I don't know how someone can really say it's the worst films ever bc I remember when nemesis came out. I don't personally know any die hard Trekkies, so I can't understand their hate, but the movie still resorted to many cliches. But I enjoyed it, but isn't this the guy who wrote a few of the transformer movies? I could be wrong but you should just be thankful somehow your shit writing made you money/popular. But I guess

But I guess that's what happens when douche bags get some success. You also gotta remember that most writers are treated like shit in Hollywood (ever see that movie The TV Set?). He prolly doesn't even get to talk to the actors (dude name drops Harrison Ford). But dude needs to remember what industry he's in, these motherfuckers made movies for a year straight without any writers.

Typical Trekkies

Trekkies are the worst of the worst. But the internet in general is being ruined by whiny fanboys with nothing else to do.

I would kinda agree with that, but the problem is still the same. You have people who know absolutely nothing about making movies constantly second guessing and insulting a professional in a field you dont have any business in and know none of the subject matter. Its like a man telling a woman how to give birth, how could I tell her that without actually knowing what its was like myself since I never did, like a woman breaking down video of a football game even though she had never played, or

If you want to complain then go make a better movie yourself instead of standing around and obsessing over someone else's job that your not qualified to do in the first place

Idiot fans are everywhere

I remember this one particular asshole who tried to derail Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan because he hated the story and wanted it to be about Kirk going back in time and saving President Kennedy from being assassinated. That asshole's name: Gene Roddenberry.

Good for him. If only more people would put bitchy fanboys in their place. I hate this mindset that the actual creative people in this industry can't speak their minds but the mindless drones and fanboys are aloud to vomit up whatever ugly, idiotic bullshit they want.

Into Darkness was wonderful, this coming from a TREKKIE. so not all Trekkies hated the film. There is so much blatant disregard and understanding for what that film did it's sickening. I thought Trekkies were supposed to the

Can't expect too much restraint from a guy who thinks 9/11 was a conspiracy.

DareDevil -- Go back to school please. It's "you're", not "your". Twice you misspelled it in your post. Furthermore, the word "it's" should have been the beginning of a sentence. And "means of communication" *HAVE* changed, not "has changed". It's almost like reading the essay of a 2nd grader.

And I'm shocked so many people are saying this first one is better. While it's a good film, its just a mishmash of ideas and characters while Into Darkness actually was ABOUT something that felt very much like Trek. The uber fans bitch about the 09 film not being "smart" enough. They get the "smarter" film with Into Darkness and rate it the worst Trek ever!? Over Final Frontier, Insurrection, Generations, Nemesis!? I officially hate the internet.

Thanks

My mom called me tonight, citing your article as fair and full of good advice. You think the NSA is watching you? Try having a mother with Google alerts on her son. which I still have trouble accepting and clearly forget is possible. I do recognize how lucky I am. So thank you for your fairness, and thank you,I think, for motivating my mother to call me and finish the job of raising me.
