Star Wars companion short Black Angel to get remade as a feature film

BLACK ANGEL, the short fantasy movie commissioned by George Lucas that screened in select locales before THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK during its theatrical run, is being remade as a feature length film. The 25-minute short was recently uploaded to YouTube, but was considered to be lost until it surfaced a few years ago.

Original director (and one of the people who helped design the first lightsaber) Roger Christian will be behind the camera for the project, and filming is expected to begin later this year. Christian says the budget will be "around $15 million," and while most of the funding has been secured, an Indiegogo campaign has been launched for the planned movie to help cover other costs, like concept art and set design.

From BLACK ANGEL's Indiegogo page:

Think Game of Thrones meets Valhalla Rising, Excalibur meets Lord of the Rings. A powerful tale of ancient Celtic magic and Nordic Paganism, it’ll be gritty, dirty and heroic – everything great fantasy should be. The story follows a knight as he journeys deep into the dark underworld with the daughter of a rival king, to meet the face of evil itself and fight the Black Angel in combat. Full of drama, action and heroism, pure light is pitted against eternal darkness and damnation.

In making this film, we want to return to the visceral physical action of classic fantasy films, like Conan the Barbarian and the original Star Wars. We will mainly rely on practical effects to bring the world of Black Angel to life, with CGI integrated into the film only when absolutely required.

The full cast for BLACK ANGEL hasn't been announced yet, but it will star Rutger Hauer as High Priest Sirdar, John Rhys-Davies as King Aelous and Laura Weissbecker (CHINESE ZODIAC) as Kyna, a warrior princess. Are you going to chip in a buck or two (or two thousand for the Demon Slayer sword prop perk) towards BLACK ANGEL?

Well with a concept as story-less as that you can only get better. You can definitely see where Excalibur got a lot of its inspiration. I would consider this more of an art project not a real film. I mean really what was the motivation, oh I slipped in a lake and some chick talked to me in my head and it somehow saved me so now I have to suicide myself for her?
And when will people get over the hitting two sticks together fighting technique. Just because your axe hits his staff does not mean

I kinda liked the short film for a few things. The tone was right. I liked the costumes and the acting. The music was good. I felt the plot and script was under done. But as a short it didn't aim for a whole story. The set and the color palette, the rain, the grit, it was really well done. It was slow paced and atmospheric. With a better more robust script and a better supporting team this could be turned into something quite good.

"with CGI integrated into the film only when absolutely required."

This. Every fucking studio needs to have this kind of mindset.

That Jurassic World movie SUCKED and a lot of it had to do with CGI being absolute shit in many scenes.

You're such a dick - you really are. JW hasn't even been released yet so pray tell how have you seen it and been able to cast such a brilliant opinion?

You can tell in the trailer the cgi is garbage, compared to other high cgi films.

I expected this after all things Lucasfilm were sold to Disney. I'm willing to give this a shot.

I understand that it was originally a full length feature screenplay that was cut down to short film length. The pacing in this short film is very slow for today's audiences, which is why I imagine the filmmaker kept reminding people to place themselves 30 years ago when watching it. I could definitely see where it influenced Boorman's Excalibur, so I'm interested to see what they can make of

Okay, so this movie was basically about that medival guy who drowned because he was too stupid to remove his ridiculous helmet (and had some sort of afterlife experience)? And now they make a Feature movie out of it?? Well, at least the short movie was well shot.

It was a really dumb short, and this is just more proof of how creatively bankrupt Hollywood is.

It was a short from 1980. It wasn't a complete story. I thought it was actually pretty good work.
