Star Wars spinoff writer Gary Whitta to adapt Mark Millar’s Starlight

It was December of last year when we last heard about the latest Mark Millar adaptation STARLIGHT, even though the first issue hit shelves in March of this year. Now it seems the project is in motion again as Gary Whitta (BOOK OF ELI), who is penning one of the STAR WARS standalone movies, is set to write script. Simon Kinberg (X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST) has been attached to produce the project Millar has described as “Flash Gordon meets The Dark Knight Returns” and “Buzz Lightyear meets Unforgiven”. STARLIGHT follows a space hero named Duke McQueen who saved the universe four decades ago.

Here is the full synopsis for STARLIGHT:

So much for retirement! This March, meet Duke McQueen, a man who has long since settled down and left his days of saving the Universe and operating as the space hero everyone depended on—at least that’s what he thought. His wife long passed and his kids off embarking on their own adventures, Duke lives a quiet, solitary life until he receives an unexpected call from a distant world, calling him to action one last time.

You’ve likely seen or heard of a couple of other Miller adaptations including WANTED, KICK-ASS, and KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE which will arrive next year. For me it’s a mixed bag as I enjoyed WANTED and thought KICK-ASS was heavily flawed; I’ll be interested to see what Whitta comes up with for a script for this great sounding story though. While there is no director yet for STARLIGHT, as mentioned, Whitta is hard at work on his other space adventure, the STAR WARS spinoff being directed by Gareth Edwards which is set for 2016.

Have you read the comic? Would you recommend it?
