Star Wars TV series delayed 3-5 years, gets a few plot details

06.13.2011

The Star Wars live-action TV series has been delayed for a while now due to "budgetary costs" and though Lucas recently let us know that 50 hours of scripts exist for the project, it's not moving forward yet.

In an interview with producer Rick McCallum for Czech Position (a country where the series is supposed to be shot) he gives an update on the status of the show.

The TV series is on hold, but that has nothing to do with the Czech Republic; it has to do with [the episodes being] so ambitious… We have 50 hours of third-draft scripts, but the problem we have is there is a lot of digital animation; we don’t have the technology yet to be able to do them at a price that is safe for television. Since we would be financing them, it would be suicide for us to do this [now]. So we are going to wait three or four years.

Network television and cable television as we know it are completely imploding, so we’re not really sure that in five years’ time we can release a dramatic one-hour episode because it is all reality TV now.

It's an curious point he makes about TV, and I think he's wrong as I wouldn't say it's "imploding." Yes, there is still a ton of reality shit on the air, but now we have less "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire" and more "Mad Men," Breaking Bad," "Dexter, "Game of Thrones" etc. Yes, the model is shifting to different means of distribution be it on demand or Hulu streaming and what have you, but to say hour long dramas will cease to exist altogether in five years? There's no way.

As for the plot of the series, McCallum gives a hint.

Basically, it is like ‘The Godfather’; it’s the Empire slowly building up its power base around the galaxy, what happens in Coruscant, which is the major capital, and it’s [about] a group of underground bosses who live there and control drugs, prostitution.

Step one to making an affordable Star Wars live-action TV show: Don't set it in a place that requires 100% of the environment to be CGI like Coruscant. The synposis itself sounds like its trying to be Star Wars: The Wire, but to think George Lucas could ever write a script that reaches that show's level of brilliance is laughable.

I think that on first impression, the idea of a live-action Star Wars show sounds awesome. But so did a new trilogy of movies, and I don't trust George Lucas with his own property any more. This permanent fascination with the events of the prequels and the time before that I will never understand, and the series has to move forward at some point in the future, perhaps only after Lucas exists as a smiling ghost by a campfire.

Extra Tidbit: I don't care if books exist that chronicle what happens after Episode VI. Just scrap it, and have JJ Abrams direct some awesome new movie set in the universe with actual well-crafted characters and believable dialog.

Good.

I freaking hate all the Prequel garbage. There is one important fact that completely eludes Lucas when it comes to the success of Star Wars, and that is the heart of the first movie. It's not about Anakin, Coruscant, Palpatine, or the Empire. We don't care.

Seriously, after what he did for Trek (which was more Star Wars than Star Trek anyway), I couldn't even begin to imagine how awesome that would be.

On the other hand, it could end up being a bigger let down than the prequels were, with talent like that behind it, if that's even possible.

Lame

Why do I get the sense that this will end up becoming an outlet for staff writers to ejaculate their notoriously annoying brand of political activism?

Enough with the Clone Wars already anyway. How about a show set during the original Trilogy's time line? How about a show about Rogue Squadron?

my thoughts exactly concerning McCallum's comments regarding the implosion of television and the "death" of hour long dramas. clearly comments from a mind with only a surface knowledge of television. if anything, since the big event shows like "LOST" and more meditative, deliberately paced dramas like "The Sopranos", hour long dramas are at the biggest and best they've ever been and are redefining the term "character-driven narrative".

The phrase "character-driven narrative" is an attempt to intellectualize soap operas with gaping plot holes.

Excuses to justify scrapping the project

Don't know why this isn't good news to everyone. McCallum's comments sound to me like a person coming up with excuses to help justify the fact that he plans on scrapping the project altogether.

Personally, I can't wait for the inevitable announcement that the show has been cancelled.

Sounds like a lame time period for story-telling. The Old Republic era would be a good place to go to avoid having to fence around established characters. Having said that... I don't think there's a Star Wars geek alive that wouldn't want to see Grand Admiral Thrawn brought to a screen of any size.

George Lucas did not get to be as wealthy as he is by being stupid with his money.

And so I expect we will see this series in just about the amount of time he and McCallum have stated.

If they were serious about this show, it would already be on the air. It's been the same news since the prequels came out and I don't see this project ever happening. I honestly would rather see new movies...with someone beside Lucas writing/directing the project of course.

Anybody more than a little surprised that he intends for the show to deal with topics like crime, prostitution, drugs? Star Wars meets Boardwalk Empire? I'm hip.

Also, George...network television is indeed imploding, but cable television is getting better by the hour.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I'd like to see this. But as a fan of quality content, I don't really care if it ever gets made, because of the involvement of Lucas and McCallum, who seem completely out of touch at this point.

I never thought I'd say this, but I think it's time to let it go. At least until some talented people are able to take the reins.

The plot definitely sounds bad ass but there are plenty of ways around the budget concerns. This doesn't need to be set on Coruscant which requires a crazy amount of effects. Set it on Tatooine and all you need is a nice big desert. Plus they can still keep all the drugs and gangster stuff with Mos Esley.

Not to mention that we all know that the special effects of this show will not compare with the movies. If the show throws through with awesome plots and lovable characters then I'm sure

Firefly had some terrible effects in it but we all still love that because of the amount of heart and character in the show.

Fine. Whatever. You can't do it due to budget. We get it. So why don't you make some new movies in the meantime? Do what everyone has asked and pass the reigns to someone else to create a new story in the Star Wars universe? One that doesn't need to have any connection to the originals or prequels. They would be guaranteed to be profitable, as myself and every other person whose been burned on this franchise will still pony up our $10 to see it.

Let Lucas focus on the TV series if and when it ever happens. He's more or less already let go of this to mixed results with the video game side of things. Let someone else try something with the movies.

Or just make another one your damn self. I don't care. Give me something Star Wars that isn't a damn kids cartoon!

To be fair, I like the Clone Wars but I agree I would like to have something more adult as well.

I'm not sure about that tv plot. I feel like it could suck, but could also have potential. I'd imagine some surviving Jedi are trying to stop the crime bosses (I can't imagine a Star Wars story NOT involving any Jedi). I don't get how people complain about Lucas just doing things for money, b/c if that was the case wouldn't he just have someone make more movies like in the tidbit? When Lucas first gave away control of the Star Wars universe we got the Holiday Special, and if that doesn't

If GL didn't have total control over Star Wars then 20th Century Fox would. And if that were the case then you could say goodbye to all the Star Wars clips and fan films and fan edits and tribute videos and fan documentaries and 70 minute long movie reviews on youtube which would be pulled down immediately by 20th Century Fox's copyright claim department.

NO DOUBT!! I think it would be cool to see what happens inbetween episode 3 and before episode 4. To see Darth as he comes to power!

Lucas pitched the Star Wars Ball now let Abrams knock the fucker out of the park. If not Abrams then someone equally worthy.

If they can make a new series of Battlestar Galactica with Kick ass storyline and fairly cool visuals then I'm sure Lucas (preferably someone else) could churn out a decent SW series.

Yea I definitely don't agree with him that it's all reality tv now. There's PLENTY of shows I watch that aren't reality tv. Castle, Fringe, Justified, The Walking Dead (just to name a few). I would love to see what happens after episode VI, but like so many others I don't know if I trust Lucas to direct it anymore. I didn't hate the new films they were just so so to me. I don't know if I ever really see this happening anyway, but I'll stay optimistic.

ashow about the rise of the empire? i want to see good guys prevailing over evil, not the rise of evil and its rise the end. that was the problem besides horrible acting a terrible pacing, but the new star wars was abbout the fall of a man, wheras the original was like the greatest story of good overcoming evil. why does lucas want to make all these depressing stories?
