Stellan Skarsgard in negotiations for David Fincher's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

08.05.2010by:

Stellan Skarsgard is currently in negotiations to play Martin Vanger in GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. Vanger is one of the top suspects in the case of a teenager that disappeared 40-years ago. That teenage girl was part of the Vanger family.

In the story Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) is hired by Henrik Vanger, the former CEO of Vanger Enterprises for a freelance assignment connect with the disappearance. Martin is the current president of Vanger Enterprises.

Skargard had already met with director David Fincher prior to the project, "I have met (helmer David) Fincher, I want to work with him, he wants to work me. I have had a concrete offer and now we are in negotiations. The contract is for the period September to March, but I don't know yet when I am supposed to start my part of the film."

He also spoke about locations for the film, "Most of it is to be shot in Stockholm, but some studio work will be done in the U.S. I think there might be some location work there as well, when it becomes too dark to shoot here."

The screenplay was penned by Steven Zaillian (SCHINDLER'S LIST, GANGS OF NEW YORK).

The role of Lisbeth Salander, the girl Vanger hires to investigate Blomkvist, has not been filled. Word on the internet is that it's now down to Rooney Mara and Emily Browning. My vote is for Browning.

Extra Tidbit: Stellan Skarsgard gave me the creeps in THE GLASS HOUSE.

Isn't Martin Vangar overweight? I guess it doesn't matter that much, but the book makes reference to it multiple times and it does fit his character.

Browning migh be okay. I also kind of like the idea of Page. Still not sure. Would like to see them in make-up.

Great news, Stellan rocks! Also read on another site that Robin Wright (former Penn) might be up for the role of Erika Berger, the editor-in-chief of Millenium magazine for those familiar with the story. That would also be perfect casting i think.

Great casting choice and Fincher is one of my favourite directors. Yet this just seems so completely unnecessary given the recently made and excellent film. I also have serious doubts that anyone can play title role better than Noomi Rapace did, she completely owned it.

You can be sure that any movie that involves Vikings and/or anything Swedish Stellan will be in it. Its kind of like every mafia movie has the same italians showing up in it over and over again.

Well all know that if this does indeed happen, then it's just going to spiral down into a competition between him and Craig for 'coolest voice'.

Love Stellan for Martin. Browning is too pretty for Lisbeth.

What happened to Ellen Page? She's a better actress than Browning or Mara (who was quite terrible in the Elm Street remake) and has the perfect look for Lisbeth.

I just hope Fincher's version is better than the Swedish adaptation, which took some pretty big liberties with the source material.

hmmm....

This sounds like good news. Skarsgard will pull off the Martin Vanger character very well. I had no idea Daniel Craig had already signed on to star, he'll be great as Mikael Blomqvist. As far as Salander goes, either Rooney or Emily would be great, but I just have a feeling Rooney will be a better choice. Something about her being relatively unknown just seems to make more sense for the character of Salander. I have a feeling Browning is going to blow up as an actress after Sucker Punch

Bootstrap Bill

I wasn't really in favor of this movie getting made, but the cast is shaping up nice and with Fincher directing I'm starting to come around.

Great casting choice! Should be a big star!

I've started watching the original movie, but I'm taking my time w/it. I haven't read any of the books yet, maybe I will don't know yet. I'm already reading 50 books right now I(Even in "Deep Blue Sea!) guess one more won't hurt. I don't understand why this guy isn't a bigger star. He's always excellent, maybe this is the role that will propel him. I also thought Brenden Gleeson could be a decent choice too. Agree?

Stellan Skarsgard is the man. He was great in Good Will Hunting and Angels and Demons. This is solid casting, as far as I am concerned. Would be awesome to see him do a porject with his son Alexander Skarsgard (i.e. Eric, True Blood).
