Stephen Lang is down for playing Cable in Deadpool sequel

02.15.2016

Deadpool 2 Stephen Lang Banner

DEADPOOL 2 hasn't been officially greenlit yet, but we do know that a sequel is already in the works, and Ryan Reynolds and director Tim Miller have promised that Cable, aka Nathan Summers, will appear in the follow-up. Last year, Miller said "If we don’t put Cable in Deadpool 2 I think we’ll be run out of town on a rail," and over the weekend (while DEADPOOL was breaking a bunch of box office records), AVATAR's Stephen Lang took to Twitter to campaign for the role.

Although Lang has been a fan-favorite choice to play Cable for quite some time now, I think he's just a tad too old for the role, however I certainly wouldn't mind if he does end up being cast as the time-traveling mutant. The actor definitely looks the part, and he's in fantastic shape, especially for a 63-year-old dude. Do you think Lang has a realistic shot at playing Cable in DEADPOOL 2?

I like the guy for it, and if deadpool happened 6 years ago when development first started then he would have be perfect casting despite being in his 50's. But at 63 (I think) he is going to be too old to carry on for more than what 1 or at most 2 movies? They need someone that can sustain for 10-15 years, I like Lang but I don't want to see an almost 80 year old cable lol. Not to mention Cable is supposed to be physically MUCH larger than Deadpool. Lang is shorter and less build than Reynolds

Lang is shorter and less build than Reynolds is, so the dynamic would feel off. If they could train Kevin Nash to actually act a little better, he would be perfect. Physically he is a monster, still despite his age. Yeah his legs aren't in the best shape, but movie magic can help with that like stunt doubles and cgi etc. So I like Lang and applaud his effort, but seriously doubt it will happen solely because of his age due to timing of when this movie actually for made. Kinda similar to the Bob Hoskins wolverine situation. Would have loved to see him do it, there were talks, but sadly mutants and Wolvie didn't come to be until more than a decade later.

Whats the betting line for which films first: Avatar 2 or Deadpool 2???

With $135M+ from opening weekend and James Cameron not running the show, we may have Deadpool 2 in theaters before Avatar 2 even starts filming.

Idk why, but I don't like this. He doesn't seem to have the presence to do Cable. Although until I saw Mel Gibson's suggestion (which could possible be his reconnection with Hollywood/have a lethal weapon vibe), I couldn't think of another actor. I haven't seen him in much, and I'm not crazy about C-Z list celebrities throwing their name in for big roles via social media. It's just not impressive. He hasn't even been rumored to be talking to the filmmakers yet. So where's the cut off from preventing pics of me at the gym mentioning a known character I'd like to play becoming news on this site? Being vaguely remembered as the bad guy from that blue alien movie and in great shape? Not taking anything away from Avatar but I'm not interested in seeing him verbally and physically spar with DP. These are out of the box, but what about the rock or vin diesel? Obviously Lang looks the closest to original, but no real terminator vibe. Or...Mickey Rourke? Denzel?

Respect your opinion about Lang, but hate all your choices that you would pick. Cable was raised on the battle field, and with Lang I can see him as a hard, war torn soldier that has seen it all, due to living in different timelines. I just don't see that in the Rock and especially not Vin. And he is the son of Cyclops & a clone of Jean Grey, so I'm not feeling the mixed race thing if they are going to "try" and stay true to character. But this is Fox and they may ignore his whole backstory and

Something that I really felt helped Deadpool along was the enthusiasm of everyone involved to deliver a movie that only barely got greenlit. The box-office speaks volumes, but I still think one false move and this whole franchise could tank. Solution? go with the guy that already wants the job! Stephen Lang is in exquisite shape, and has the acting chops to make it happen. And the fact he wants the job just makes it that much easier. I mean, if Miller and Reynolds have someone else they like

When I saw him in Avatar I immediately thought of Cable. Still, I think I'd prefer Deadpool's recommendation of Mel Gibson.

Yes!

As long as he can stay in that kind of shape who cares how old he is. The moment his character hit the screen in Avatar, Cable was the first thing hit my mind.

All in for Lang

Lang was the only good thing about Avatar and Terra Nova. I would love to see him play off of Ryan Reynolds.

I've heard this suggestion and all for it. Didn't know he was 69 though. But the man is in shape compare to slot others his age. Plus Cable is older than his father. Especially after he escaped into the future with Hope Summers as a infant and returned when she was a teenager.

Perfect but too old sadly.

If they only used Cable once then sure bring it on! But...they are going to, eventually, do X-Force and by that time Lang will be very very close to 70. He would work but he is 'too old' sadly. Probably someone else. Who? I have no idea. Only person I could think of (and I am sure no one would want him, lol) would be Neal McDonough. Has the looks and is younger but we we see...I am sure we will know before the end of this year.

I actually hadn't heard this suggestion before, but YES. Stephen Lang would be ideal for Cable. I don't agree that he's too old at all, not with the shape that he's in. And the dude was my favorite thing about Avatar.

Stephen Lang is absolutely perfect for the role. It's not like Cable is a young man anyway. Also when I think about it, Channing Tatum might even make a much better Nathan Grey (X-Man, AKA alternate younger Cable from a different mother) than as Gambit.

Kevin Nash!

I have beat this drum before, but Nash has the build and height to stand with or against a 6'2 Reynolds. Lang could work also, but at 5'10 needs a bit of movie magic.

well Kevin Nash needs to learn how to act first. Also his knees are so friggin bad that he can't do action. Even in Magic Mike, just watch him in the background during the dance sequences, he barely moves other than his arms.

As much as Lang is perfect for the role, I think the studio will be going after A-list stars for the sequel given the amount of money the first is making.

But wouldn't he be kind of overshadowing DP ?

10 or even 5 years ago, it would have been a no-brainer. But now, I'm afraid his age might get in the way, franchise and even story wise ! On the other hand, I can TOTALLY hear DP saying 'you're to old for this shit' !
I like Soloist's idea of Jon Hamm... BUT I can't wait for DP's jokes if Liam Neeson was playing Cable. And YES, I KNOW HE'S JUST AS OLD AS LANG !

I don't think Lang is too old

The reason why I say Lang isn't too old at 63 is because Harrison Ford is about reprise Indiana Jones, and he'll be damn near 80 by the time that comes out. Ford showed he is still capable of action in The Force Awakens, Lang is 10 years younger than him. Lang has also shown that he can be very physical, he's not necessarily known for being an action star like Ford but I think he can handle the action. He's an extremely versatile actor who can be funny, and he can be very menacing on screen. I

Before a movie was being conceived, everyone has said Lang would be a great Cable. Glad to see the actor embracing that now and I think great things can come in a sequel.

He definitely looks the part and would probably do a great job, but I would rather see someone younger play Cable. Even though he would never do it, I would love to see Jon Hamm play Cable.
