Steve Carell & Amy Ryan will reunite for drug drama Beautiful Boy

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

One of the greatest romances of the modern era is between Michael Scott (Steve Carell) and Holly Flax (Amy Ryan) on THE OFFICE. It is, I’ve just declared it, so it’s official. Anyone who wants to dispute can meet me outside. The two stars worked terrifically together, and now we will be able to see them do it again, but this time under much, much, much, much more serious circumstances.

EW got the word that Ryan and Carell will star in the drug-addiction drama BEAUTIFUL BOY, based on the book Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction by David Sheff. This is a true story about a man named David (Carell) who had to work closely with his ex-wife Vicki (Ryan) to help combat their son Nic’s meth addiction. Yeah, this isn’t a SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE parody performance we got going on.

The movie is set to be directed by Felix van Groeningen (THE BROKEN CIRCLE BREAKDOWN) and will be written by Luke Davies, who was nominated for an Oscar this year for writing the much-loved LION. No word yet on the release of the movie, but given the pedigree involved (Carell and Ryan are also Oscar-nominated people) I would imagine it could be ready by fall of next year, if they get to work soon.

Carell and Ryan are both incredibly talented performers with a great variety of roles at their back. We both know they’re capable of award-worthy work, on top of having great chemistry, so seeing them work within this kind of dynamic should be enthralling. At the very least we know they can break the tension with some spot-on Yoda impressions.

Catch Carell in DESPICABLE ME 3 on June 30.
