Lavalantula

I wasn't quite as enamored with last year's LAVALANTULA as I was with director Mike Mendez's previous arachnid creature feature BIG ASS SPIDER!, but I loved the idea of pitting a cast led by POLICE ACADEMY stars against giant, lava-spewing spiders.

Mendez did not return to helm the LAVALANTULA sequel that Syfy greenlit just days after the film made its premiere, but I'm willing to give director Simon Basche's follow-up a chance because it has the same draw as its predecessor did. The POLICE ACADEMY stars are coming back for a rematch with the giant, lava-spewing spiders.

Spoofing the infamous title of the second FAST & FURIOUS movie, this sequel is called 2LAVA2LANTULA and stars POLICE ACADEMY veterans Steve Guttenberg, Michael Winslow, and Marion Ramsey.

The story:

When an unprecedented amount of sinkholes erupt all over Florida, a new nest of fire spitting Lavalantulas is awakened… wreaking their fiery havoc all over the sunshine state. Adding to the mayhem, the arachnids have hit the beach where Colton West’s step-daughter, Raya, is taking a break from school.  Now an A-list movie star, Colton walks off the set of his latest hundred million dollar blockbuster to save her. Armed with specialized weapons, Colton, his personal assistant, Kyle, and his best friend, Marty, race to save the residents of Florida from these hellish prehistoric beasts and taking on the biggest, baddest one of them all — Gargantulantula.

Also in the cast are Eric Etebari, Michele Weaver, RJ Walker, James Bellinger, and Martin Kove.

Fangoria got the exclusive first look at the film's trailer, which can be viewed below. 2LAVA2LANTULA will make its Syfy debut on August 6th.
