Steven Spielberg & Harrison Ford are bringing Indy 5 to theaters in 2019

03.15.2016

All this talk about who might take up the role of Indiana Jones, and few considered the possibility that it might be Ford again! Well, it looks like that's the case as Walt Disney Studios has announced that Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford are reuniting to bring the famed archaeologist back to theaters. If that's not good enough for you, we also have the date: July 19, 2019.

Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn:

Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019. It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.

Yep, you're reading this right and there's no trickery involved. Spielberg will direct, Ford will star, and franchise veterans Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will be producing. No word on the title, story or George Lucas, but they'd be smart in distancing themselves FAR from CRYSTAL SKULL. Given that TEMPLE OF DOOM is technically a prequel to RAIDERS, perhaps they'll take on a story that precedes SKULL? After all, it couldn't be any worse!

INDIANA JONES 5 is slated to hit theaters on July 19, 2019.

Remember when Indiana Jones was cool? Let's get back to that!

Thank You Steven, Harry, Frank, Kathy, and Disney

This is outstanding news! The very fact that Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg are making a new Indiana Jones adventure is a clear sign that the next film will reinstate the more serious and high-stakes tone of Raiders, Doom, and Crusade.. Crystal Skull was a fine film and better than any action/adventure romp Hollywood has made sine the Last Crusade. What makes it the weakest entry in the franchise is that Indy is made to be the goofy father once Mutt Williams shows up. Nobody puts Indy

Crystal Skull was a fine film and better than any action/adventure romp Hollywood has made sine the Last Crusade. What makes it the weakest entry in the franchise is that Indy is made to be the goofy father once Mutt Williams shows up. Nobody puts Indy in the back seat! But that's exactly what happened thanks to George Lucas trying to shove Mutt down our throats as the new star of the franchise. That didn't work and now Steven and Harrison can make an Indy film that they feel is a worthy successor to Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of doom, and Indiana Jones and the lLast Crusade. I respect Lucas for creating Indiana Smith, but it is Spielberg who put the Jones in Indiana and Ford who gave him life. Can't wait to see what they cook up next!

Ford wasn't actually too old to play Indy in the last two movies. He was 48 in Last Crusade, and 64 in Crystal Skull. Neither of those ages are too old to do an action movie nowadays. However, playing Indy at 78 is WAY to old. Indy 5 is going to watch like a parody at this point. The only reason I'm not going to completely sell this is because I'd like to see one last good movie to end the franchise. I really hope the script is great this time around.

So we all agree......

.......this is a bad idea and should be left alone. I'm very worried that if this franchise gives itself another black eye that Fords run as Indy will end negatively much like Bruce Willis in the Die Hard franchise. You count the first three and 4 & 5 you pretend never happened. Much like every Terminator film after 2. Really hollywood? When making Indiana Jones, Terminator, and Die Hard movies you cast Jai Courtney, Justin Long, Shae LaDouchebag, Kevin Smith, Claire Danes,.....how much longer

2019? whats the fuckin point. Harrison will be 90 by then and he's not aging very well at that. I guess they'll be calling George Lucas to cgi Ford from a zombie to Indy.

I have to add that I actually love the nuclear refrigerator scene. Tired of people bitching about it. Cgi gophers, ants, monkeys, and aliens were terrible but the nuclear bomb scene was cool and ended with an awesome shot of Indy looking at the mushroom cloud he just escaped. Ridiculous yes, but awesome ridiculous.

It's not the years people, it's the mileage

Who cares how old Ford is, he IS Indy and if he is game along with Spielberg I will be there opening day! I still want a family story with Indy having another son not named mutt or a protg to train to pass the fedora along. Give me real stunts, religious artifacts, a creepy crawly scene (my choice being piranhas), boobie-traps, and clues that always have X marking the spot and I'm good!

Do one more film with Ford that captures the spirit of the original trilogy and have the torch passed off to Chris Pratt as Indy's re-casted son.

Thank God

So sick of the reboot drek. They'd probably make Indiana a girl anyway, even though we already have Lara Croft. Maybe they'll make her a man someday. Anyhoo...

Crystal Skull was just as good as the other two sequels to Raiders, so I think folks were way to harsh on it, probably more of a habit from riding the Prequel Hate Train. Besides, it certainly wasn't worse than the awful fanficish Episode VII.

The Indiana Jones character strikes me as the sort of guy that would be involved in shit his whole life not ever slowing down, so Ford's age doesn't bother. Plus Ford just crashed an experimental plane in real life, and walked away from it. So all the tubby potato chip eating nerds out there can cool it on Ford being too old.

I kind of suspected that he agreed to do that schlocky Episode VII if they gave him an Indy film. I just hope Kennedy doesn't come up with the bright idea to give him an illegitimate daughter.

I wonder what the McGuffin will be?

I;m sorry, crystal skull was terrible. It started 'okay' but quickly fell into the whole over CGI, crazy crapfest. If you look at the previous 3 Indy's, despite the super natural elements, the action has a grounded realism to it. The jungle stuff was so over the top, the swinging from vines, the sword fight between vehicles, the crazy multiple waterfalls, the ants. Ford slept walked through it, he new it was crap.

It reminds me of the time before Crystal Skull, when everyone was complaining about Temple of Doom.

It's an adventure serial. And even though it's far more believable than anything we saw in Episode VII, it's not really supposed to be realistic. Indiana strapped himself to the periscope of a submarine in Raiders. The South American tomb in the beginning of the film, had photoelectric sensors that triggered spikes, and a weight sensor that made the whole temple collapse. How realistic

Over the top is kind of the point with Indiana Jones films.

Look, at the end of the day, none of the sequels hold a candle to Raiders. But all of the sequels, Crystal Skull included, are on equal ground. There were some problems to be sure, but not anymore problems than were in the other two sequels to Raiders.

Hey I like Indy IV too, but I agree with other folks that the CGI was too much (along with too many drops over the waterfall) and I've come to the conclusion that "Mutt swinging with the apes" is the equivalent of "Fonzie jumping the shark".

Could've been good...but just wasn't. Simple.

I hope that Indy V, (perhaps appropriately subtitled "The Apology", for what they did to the fans with IV) will be much better.

Too late for that shit

I don't think so. They fucked that last one up too badly for me to get back on board. Maybe I'll feel differently in three years. But it sure seems that Disney, drunk off Star Wars money, is trying to lure us back in with some bullshit. I hope they don't just rehash the plot of Raiders for this one. I'll stick with the original trilogy and the Young Indiana Jones series.

I'm excited. Harrison Ford can clearly still pull this off. It seems unlikely that Lucas will be involved to muck things up. The studio now knows how effective practical effects can be compared to CGI. The only stumbling block is if they decide to bring Shia Labeuof back, but they don't really have to, and my guess is they won't. I'm not expecting this to be Raiders good, but I think it will be decent. Certainly better than Crystal Skull.

I'm excited for this. I liked Crystal Skull although clearly not on par with the first three. Cut out the cgi and go back to practical and please no winks to the others. Ford was great at Han Solo again so I'm optimistic for this.

BERMUDA TRIANGLE!

I know I'm in the minority, but I'll take Crystal Skull over the Star Wars prequels any day of the week. Yes, it was weak, with some cringe worthy scenes, but I didn't think it was bad. It's Ford and Spielberg's pacing that kept it alive for me. I think with Lucas out of the way, Spielberg can confidently see it through (if this even happens) without having to defer to Lucas. Spielberg's been open about reluctantly listening to Lucas in the first place. So, I'd say the Bermuda Triangle and send

Dont get too excited

I remember being balls to the wall excited the last time these guys announced a new Indy. After I left the theater it was like those same balls were stapled to the shitty script of the joke of a movie I had just witnessed . While I can't help but get a little excited at this news I am more than cautiously optimistic about it being any good.

I still think of crystal skull as a fluke, and think that they can make a fun adventure film with Harrison Ford involved. It is crazy how old he'll be, and my first thought was "maybe get Young Indiana Jones himself, sean patrick flanery to play his son and pass the torch" but then I realized SPF will be 53 already by the time this movie comes out! And he's lacking the star power these days anyway. Pratt is the obvious Spielberg-verse choice right now, but we might be oversaturated with him by

Bad Idea

Why is it I still want to see another Rambo movie even if Stallone is 80 but for some reason I think another Indy is a bad idea?.......Was the last one really that bad? Lets be 100% honest though and agree we all love Ford and he's forever cemented in the awesome category being Han Solo and Indiana Jones but most of his movies suck other than that. Not all haters, just most. Kind of like Deniro.

I would actually argue most of his movies are pretty decent... the late '90s saw some dog days with special exceptions like What Lies Beneath, and while he has taken some roles recently that are better, his quality control outside of his iconic roles is still questionable. But he was a solid leading man for a lot of years. Heck, in my childhood he was THE solid leading man.

Terrific news!

Because Indiana Jones is my favorite cinematic character, and Harrison Ford is as much a part of his creation as Spielberg and Lucas, and has proven to be resilient in his old age, and remains enthusiastic for the part, I'm for this. The fact that George Lucas is out, but Steven Spielberg is still in, is also good news (Spielberg is a lot better at adapting with the times).

Thats a week after Disney plans to release their "Inhumans" movie with Marvel and less than a month after "Incredibles 2". I have a feeling somethings gonna move.

So far also that summer we have Star Wars 9, Fast and Furious 9, Justice League 2, Avengers 4, Transformers 6, and Shazam. Avatar 2 or 3 may also be looking for a summer slot

While I wouldn't be opposed to recasting Indy. I'm glad they're bring back Ford for at least one last go-round as Indy. Crystal Skull was an atrocious abortion of a movie and no way to end his time as the character. I don't think it really matters if they set this before or after Crystal Skull, but as long as they don't use aliens or rely too much on CGI, then they should be good for developing a great story.

Crystal Skull was an atrocious abortion of a movie and no way to end his time as the character. I don't think it really matters if they set this before or after Crystal Skull, but as long as they don't use aliens or rely too much on CGI, then they should be good for developing a great story.

And for the people saying that he's too old for this movie. I disagree, he was doing alright in running around and getting in on the action in TFA. And I'm not sure what people remember from the first three Indy movies, but it's not like he was doing any high-flying stunt work for those films. Not sure why you'd be expecting him to do somersaults and backflips for this movie.

Alright running around in TFA? He was crippled by a freaking door. And he is not getting younger, only slower and more fragile.

I honestly don't think Crystal Skull was any worse than the other two sequels to Raiders, I think it get's a bad rap mainly from habitual Lucas hate.

I agree that Ford looked good in TFA, even though I think the movie sucked donkey balls.

@Moat Man: Sorry, but you can´t compare Temple of Doom or the last Crusade with Crystall Skull. You honestly can´t! Sure, there were ridiculous stunts in both but...the pacing was way better, the gags and banter were on point, the scripts were better, the characters were just wonderfully written (Connery just ruled as Indy´s dad). Bad CGI, forgetable villains and all aside just look what they did with poor Marion in Crystall Skull. Really, Crystall Skull was every bit as bad as it is

Too old!

Are they nuts? Ford will be 76-77!!! Time to hang it up! Just get Pratt to do it or let the franchise rest.

When did Pratt walk away from an experimental plane crash last? Oh, that's right - never.

Why?

Why can't Indiana Jones get the Bond treatment? There are plenty of actors out there with just as much charisma as Ford had in the 80s. I may be among a small number when I say this, but I am not bothered by different actor donning the fedora. Ford is Indiana Jones, but he's too old to be an action star. If Disney is unwilling to recast the role, then perhaps this franchise should be left alone.

I think surviving a plane crash has more to do with luck than with age.

Is this going to be like the Force Awakens?

Where Harrison comes back to send off his character and hand the mantle over for the next generation? I sure hope so. Ford is old and I can't see him being too active in this role. Perhaps they'll recast his son.

Crystal Skull was no way to say goodbye to such an iconic character, so this is good. I smell a torch being passed. Next be on the lookout for a casting announcement of Chris Pratt or someone like him.
