Steven Spielberg on why he thinks his sequels aren't very good

Steven Spielberg Indiana Jones and the Kindom of the Crystal Skull The Lost Work Jurassic Park

Although I wouldn't presume that everyone shares my opinion, it probably wouldn't be completely out of order for me to say that Steven Spielberg has given the world some of its very best cinematic stories. With films like JAWS, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, JURASSIC PARK and others under his belt, Steven Spielberg has definitely proven his talent, but, they can't all be winners. While speaking with the New York Times, Spielberg opened up about his sequels and why he believes that they're not as good as they could have been.

My sequels aren’t as good as my originals because I go onto every sequel I’ve made and I’m too confident. This movie made a ka-zillion dollars, which justifies the sequel, so I come in like it’s going to be a slam dunk and I wind up making an inferior movie to the one before. I’m talking about “The Lost World” and “Jurassic Park.”

When it comes to original films, Steven Spielberg looks for things that will scare him, "fear is my fuel. I get to the brink of not really knowing what to do and that’s when I get my best ideas. Confidence is my enemy and it always has been." Spielberg doesn't have too many sequels under his belt, just TEMPLE OF DOOM, THE LAST CRUSADE, KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL and THE LOST WORLD at the moment, but he is due to return to the world of Indiana Jones on July 19, 2019 with INDIANA JONES 5; lets hope he doesn't let his confidence get the best of him this time.

Steven Spielberg's latest, THE BFG, is due to hit theaters on July 1, 2016.

I've liked every one of those sequels (even Crystal Skull!). Just wrangle Lucas on the story and effects, and we are in for a treat!

It's a weird thing to comment on. Because I think TEMPLE OF DOOM and LAST CRUSADE are great Indy sequels. I think CRYSTAL SKULL suffered more from George Lucas' involvement than anything else. And LOST WORLD was pretty dumb, so I can't defend that. I'd say he's 2/2 for sequels, that's a decent track record, definitely not a fail.

Saying he's 2/2 for sequels makes no sense when he's made more than that.

Sequels

The Lost World had a few amazing moments, the TRex' and the RV, was an amazing scene in the theater. Also, a nice throwback to the old Creature Features at the end. The first two Indy sequels I enjoyed as much as the first. Especially Temple. When I was a kid, the dinner scene was horrific and awesome. The child stealing shaman that ripped out still beating hearts, terrifying and unforgettable. Mine carts!!! Last Crusade was perfect. His worst movie happens to be a sequel. The green screen mess

The green screen mess that was Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull. The terrible effects, bad script and hammy acting felt like a fan film or a parody. But I don't want that to deter him from revisiting some old properties. A sequel to The Duel by him is something I've always wanted. It could be made fairly cheap by today's standards. Other than that, the time has passed for him to make sequels to the majority of his films. Indy too old, Jaws ruined, E.T. wouldn't have the same magic, Private Ryan would be retired by now, nobody cared for Minority Report recently. Their isn't much he could revisit. I would like to see him do Godzilla 2 or one of these Universal Monster reboots. Him getting back to something that isn't so serious and has more of a fantasy angle like BFG is all I want from him. He's made his message pictures, now entertain us again.

I loved that you mentioned Temple of Room. The sex scenes were great. 😉

I enjoyed Lost World; granted it's not as great as Jurassic Park, or Jurassic World, but it did have Goldblum as the main character who I'm a bigger fan of than Sam Neil's Alan Grant.

Goldblum basically plays himself in everything so I'd much rather watch Sam Neil who tries to makes his characters different than himself.

I'm with you on this one Soloist. I enjoyed Lost World. It was darker, more violent, campy, and still had the spirit of the first. Compared to Jurassic Park 3 and Jurassic World, it comes off as much better sequel and quite underrated.
