Steven Spielberg won't direct Star Wars: Episode VII because it's his best friend's genre

Nov. 9, 2012by:

Okay, so I'm sorry if you are already sick of all the STAR WARS: EPISODE VII articles. It's pretty big news though, and exciting, especially since the director's chair is up for grabs.

When I asked you guys who you would choose as your director for the next film, you put Steven Spielberg in second place. He was more or less everyone's "dream director", so to speak. The guy directed iconic films that tie to many a childhood, so why the hell wouldn't you want him to take a stab at it? Well, it looks like he won't do it anyway.

During the LINCOLN premiere, Access Hollywood asked Spielberg if he would be up for directing EPISODE VII and this is what he said:

"No! No! Its not my genre. Its my best friend Georges genre."

But is that really how he feels? Well, that's not how he felt in 2002...

"I've asked [Lucas]. He won't let me do one. I wanted to do one 15 years ago, and he didn't want me to do it. I understand why - Star Wars is George's baby. It's his cottage industry and it's his fingerprints. He knows I've got Jurassic Park and Raiders. But George has Star Wars and I don't think he feels inclined to share any of it with me."

The time is now, my friend.

Extra Tidbit: I know what the schmoes in the "Cast This" said about Spielberg directing EPISODE VII, but for those who didn't participate, what do you think?

This is exactly what I expected. Steven Spielberg is good to his friends, and at this point in his career I think it would be something of a step backward for him, even if he didn't feel that way. While the notion of an Episode VII is rather exciting (maybe more for people who read the fan-fic novels), it's hard for me to think of a natural continuation after the tidy little wrap-up Return of the Jedi did. Yoda's dead, Anakin's dead, Palpatine's dead, Jabba's dead, the Fetts are all dead, the

Yoda's dead, Anakin's dead, Palpatine's dead, Jabba's dead, the Fetts are all dead, the Empire has fallen. Will it be about rebuilding? I'm sure they'll be bringing back the Sith, because what is Star Wars without some sort of Force to go with it?

I figure though, if a director has enough credits to his name and a good rep, he might want to steer clear of this make-or-break property. Fan-boys are notoriously unforgiving. Just ask Lucas. I wouldn't envy the director who nabs the project.

I'm afraid that if I do a better STAR WARS movie than he did (a strong chance) he won't be my friend any more...

Lucas should go see Spielberg and tell him it's okay if he decides to do it. Spielberg has a similar sensitivity and the same influences that Lucas has but he's a better filmmaker. There's no one I'd like more to direct this thing.

Tidbit

What about Duncan Jones? I know he hasn't done a movie of this kind of scale before but I think it would be an interesting choice

Its simple...he doesn't want to fuck with his friend's franchise. That makes Steven a good friend to have.

I'd want someone more interested in crafting characters personally. So get a Joe Cornish, Rian Johnson, or Brad Bird.
