Steven Spielberg's next film confirmed as Robopocalypse!

10.22.2010

Steven Spielberg has made up his mind on the next project he will direct. With WAR HORSE and TIN TIN in post-production, Spielberg will return to sci-fi with ROBOPOCAYLPSE.

We've mentioned that he's been eying the project for a while now, but he's officially taking the plunge to direct the feature based on the Daniel H. Wilson novel, which centers on the human race trying to survive an apocalyptic robot uprising. So hopefully it'll be something like TERMINATOR with no time travel bullshit, and perhaps a bit like his own WAR OF THE WORLDS, but hopefully with no Dakota Fanning screaming.

He's been following the novel since last March, before the book was even finished, but he was so pumped about it he was already making storyboards as the author wrote each new page. If something gets Stephen Spielberg this excited, I imagine it's got to be pretty damn cool.

Shooting will start in January 2012 for a 2013 release, and the book isn't even coming out until June 2011. I'll definitely be looking forward to hearing more details on this one.

Extra Tidbit: Though I know nothing about this, I'm pulling for Spielberg to reunite with Eric Bana for the lead.

I'm sorry, this sounds cool and all, but why isn't he doing Lincoln anymore? I must have missed a story somewhere along of the way because I was really looking forward to that. I mean, there really isn't anything that Spielberg can't do (and do well), but epic tales of history are the man's bread and butter. The dude should be focusing everything he has into that project.

I can't wait for the scene in which the inhuman predator thing is slowly searching a room for hiding kids, and they almost get caught! Mostly because Spielberg has never had a scene like that in any of his movies before.

Sounds like a great premise, perfect for Spielberg to direct.

I'm down for this too. Sci-Fi-mode Speilberg can do no wrong IMO. BTW, I thought Dakota Fanning was great in the underrated WOTW remake, screaming and all. I'd be interested to see what all the judgmental reporters that knock her online were like at 10 years old. I'm envisioning a lot of spazzy mouth-breathing.

I'm up for anything directed by Spielberg, the fact that it is sci-fi makes it even better. Is tin-tin still suppose to be a trilogy, or since Jackson is doing the Hobbit did they drop that idea?

Just to add. Please, oh please, don't let David Koepp write this. Keep him far away. He has been nothing but a ball & chain dragging Spielberg down.

Drew Goddard wrote the screenplay, so unless David Koepp comes in down the line to do a rewrite, no need to worry. :)
