Steven Spielberg's War Horse gets a sweeping epic trailer

06.29.2011

I'm so glad that we have Steven Spielberg. This new, beautifully shot trailer for his World War I drama WAR HORSE - an adaptation of both the 1982 children's novel by Michael Morpurgo and the 2007 stage play - demonstrates that no one in Hollywood makes films that quite feel like this. It's that special synergy that Spielberg and his legendary composer John Williams bring that makes stuff like this feel almost old fashioned in today's film climate.

WAR HORSE - starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Emily Watson, David Thewlis, Peter Mullan, Niels Arestrup, Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irvine, and Toby Kebbell opens December 28th.

Synopsis: From director Steven Spielberg comes WAR HORSE, an epic adventure for audiences of all ages. Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, “War Horse” begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets—British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter—before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land.

The First World War is experienced through the journey of this horse—an odyssey of joy and sorrow, passionate friendship and high adventure. “War Horse” is one of the great stories of friendship and war— a successful book, it was turned into a hugely successful international theatrical hit. It now comes to screen in an epic adaptation by one of the great directors in film history.

Extra Tidbit: Speaking at the start of the trailer is French actor Niels Arestrup who turned in a wonderful, hard-as-nails performance in 2009's A PROPHET.

*Sigh* I'm tired of having to give a big thumbs down to all this stuff.

This looks tired, schmaltzy, repetitive, cliche and boring.

Looks like a big budget tv movie. Hey, do you remember when Spielberg used to make films that didn't revolve around wars? ....me neither.

That was incredibly bland! If I did not read the synopsis beforehand, I would have thought this was two movies thrown into one, with random bits of each thrown in there.

Seriously, this trailer made no sense. There's no context for anything.

Meh...

Crappy trailer. Nice camera work, music, etc. It's just not doing anything for me. We'll just have to wait and see for now.

It saddens me to read so many hateful comments about a movie that looks so well made. In fact, I see a larger trend of folks on here that will bash any movie for any reason. I miss the simpler days of when movie buffs enjoyed movies from all genres and appreciated solid film making.

This article still has a 78% positive reception; if anything people on joblo are among the more consistently supportive movie fans on the internet - to a point that often baffles me, I'm not afraid to say. I liked the trailer, too, but just because others didn't doesn't mean they're "bashing it" for whatever trivial reason they can find. They were dissatisfied for reasons they have a right to voice.

The imagery and music were both beautiful and inspiring, but the trailer seemed a bit disjointed to me. If it weren't for the summary above I would have been scratching my head, wondering if I missed something.

Great, another "Boy and his _____" movie from Steven Spielberg. Glad to see he's breaking new ground.

That was an unorthadox trailer, but for inspired reasons - or so it came across to me. Looks pretty special.

Looks amazing! If Super 8 was Abrams cinematic love letter to Spielberg this is his cinematic love letter to David Lean.

I think I'll save this little diddy for blu-ray so I can cry into my own bucket of popcorn, instead of ruing it for my whole row.

Right

hopefully this has a few cool battle scenes, b/c this looks inredibly boring. Does the main lead just stare blankly the whole movie? Ohhh a horse and a boy are reunited, what a touching story! If this was "Bob Johnson's Warhorse." people would think it looked like crap

Wow! A movie with no shaking cameras, the picture is pulled back so you can enjoy the scenery and beautiful music. The music alone grabs my gonads. I can't wait to take my family to see this movie.

Looks beautiful. I already can't wait to get the blu-ray.

Oh, and as for the movie itself... we'll see.

Classic direction and cinematography is still the best.

Too many dipshit Directors try to put themselves on screen with weirdo camera angles, lighting that makes everything look like it's in some cheesy night club, and ejaculatory overuse of the shaky cam.

A real director knows its best to keep yourself offscreen.

Film looks like it may be the new classic family film. But the is trailer music used the actual work by John Williams ? It sounds an awful like James Newton Howards theme for APOLLO 13.

It's strange that Spielberg would be making a film like this, but he's proven time and time again that he's our greatest living director and I'm sure that this film will be yet another fantastic endeavor.

Cool. This is the kind of film she should be making, as far removed from Carrie Bradshaw as possible.
