You should see CLOUD ATLAS this weekend for the following reasons:

1) Simply supporting this sort of bold large-budget bravery from Hollywood is important.  That way we can see more of the sorts of movies we're always saying that we want to see.

2) You'll see choices and discoveries made by both the actors and adapters/directors that will alternately surprise and excite and inspire you in ways you hadn't imagined these particular people could.  Tom Hanks' transformations, Hugo Weaving's truly terrifying turn as Old Georgie, and everyone and everything that exists in between.

3) It's just pure genius.  It's superb and spectacular and incredible and wondrous and truly unlike about anything you've ever seen before or will see again anytime soon. The very definition of "extraordinary."

I've said it elsewhere, and I'm calling it now: CLOUD ATLAS is the Best Picture to not win Best Picture for 2012.  What it does with storytelling, with performance, with visual effects, with finding and then uniquely expressing a thematic resonance that is at once intensely personal, immensely expansive, and fundamentally important... it's just about the only film I've ever seen to live up to the unfair hype I had applied to it over months and months of ever-rising anticipation, and you can bet that I'll be seeing it again as soon as possible.  This weekend, I imagine.  I hope.

Extra Tidbit: DREDD 3D was actually the one other movie which completely lived up to my high level of my hype.

Saw it last night

If you liked the book, you'll like the movie. If you liked the trailer, you'll like the movie. If you didn't like either or one of those things, then you probably won't like it.

No matter what you think of the movie, you'll come away knowing you just saw something wholly original and incredibly ambitious.

Note: I was nervous about the casting of Halle Berry and Tom Hanks as well, but they did great. The whole cast was great. I especially enjoyed Ben Wishaw and well...we all know Hugo

Can't wait to see this Friday. It's been a long time since I've enjoyed something The Wachowskis has made. And this time Tom Twyker is riding with them!

Loved the book and looking forward to the movie

Let me first say that I respect the opinion of the naysayers and, like many films that swing for the fences, the reviews will definitely be divisive (especially due to the film's running time), But, it sounds like they really tried to capture the structure of Mitchell's book and I really do respect anyone who swings for the fences and, by the looks of it, that's what the Wachowski's/Twyker have done. Personally, i support that more than I support superhero garbage like the Avengers.

Not Good...

Yeah, sorry guys, I said it before and I'll say it again. I saw this film a month ago and am still pissed off at how disappointing it is. Give me negatives but I'm being honest. GREAT performances, Makeup, Music, Cinematography, BUT very convoluted story that just doesn't come together. It REALLY doesn't. The film goes from one scene that has crazy sci-fi action to another that involves an old man trying to escape a nursing home.
Very, very disappointed.

No

This movie looks so bland and milquetoast it's not even funny. Tom Hanks and Halle Berry are horribly two dimensional and have no range. I hope the movie fails so we can retard mediocrity in cinema.

See, I felt the same way about Hanks. But then he completely blew me away. Not quite on the level of "Heath Ledger in THE DARK KNIGHT blew me away," but still - some damn impressive work with shifts in his accent, movement quality, vocal quality, etc...

You might want to actually see it before passing judgment.
