Stop motion Addams Family still a go, wants Tim Burton to direct

06.28.2010

I'm not sure I could write a more expected movie news headline than “Tim Burton to direct stop-motion Addams Family movie,” yet here we are, with new info leading us toward that inevitable conclusion. Producer Christopher Meledandri spoke to ComingSoon, and said that the project was still in motion, and looking for Tim Burton to helm it.

"It's all very, very early, but we are developing with [Tim Burton directing] in mind," said Meledandri, "...We're just now at the story phase. Stuff has been written as though we are doing it in black and white, but that's not correct. It's not incorrect, but it's not correct. We haven't gotten to that point."

You would think with all the hate being hefted at the once-loved Burton these days, he would get his act together and starting trying to do some original shit again, but instead he’s probably doing yet another gothic rendering of existing material, and has even less work to do this time, as the existing material is already gothic to begin with.

Could this be cool? Yeah, I guess so, but I’m picturing it being almost identical in style and mood to NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS and CORPSE BRIDE. Whether or not you think that’s a good thing is up to you I suppose.

Extra Tidbit: I was always more of a Munsterís guy myself.

I can't even hear Tim Burton anymore without suddenly imagining a dreary landscape with awkwardly shaped buildings complete with crooked rooftops, jagged windows and lifeless trees in the garden.

After the CGI festival of shit-throwing that was Alice in Wonderland I may never watch another Burton movie.

It'll probably become a live action movie when he does sign on. Johnny Depp as Gomez and Bonham Carter as Morticia. Give me a break.

damn. if burton did this you wouldn't even need to watch a trailer let alone pay for a ticket, just close your eyes and you can imagine exactly how it would play out. Guy needs an injection of RISK, with a healthy dose of SOMETHING DIFFERENT stat.

What the hell, I'd probably see it.....

I guess I'm the only proponent of Burton's on this site these days since everyone hates him now.

I like all of his films except for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, that's just me though.

Somebody stop Burton now! I realize that he hasn't actually signed on, but damn, he's sucking mucho balls lately, and just needs to take a year off.

I love the idea of this...

..as long as Tim Burton doesn't come within 1,000 feet of it.

Agree with most on this one.

Burton needs to go back to his own material. Why not work on a Beetle Juice 2. Michael Keaton isn't getting any younger and the ghost with the most was only on screen for 15 minutes in the first. we have two great Addams Family movies, and cartoons and tv series. Why must there be another version? Is there really anything else to tell about the addams family? And is stop motion really that great? I was hoping he got that out of his system in Corpse Bride. Oh, and let me guess Johnny Depp will

Not good. Tim Burton is a very cool director, but by overdoing his niche he's become one of those typecast people that other people make parodies and jokes about. The first person that comes to mind when someone mentions Addam's Family director is "Tim Burton"...heck the guy could be ONE OF the Family members even...he's that gothic. But becoming typecast? That's one slippery slope, dude.

Taking a tired franchise and creating the illusion that it's this original inventive idea with added whimsy is going to stink. Especially now that Tim Burton is on auto drive.

Considering that Henry Sellick directed A Nightmare Before Christmas and had a lot of design influence on that set, you'd think hiring Sellick (an animator) instead of Burton would be a no-brainer. Especially since Corpse Bride (Burton's co-directed effort) didn't do anywhere near as well as Nightmare.

Hold your horses, kids

Chris Meledandri only said he *wanted* Tim Burton to direct this flick, not that he's signed on. Burton still has Frankenweenie coming out for Disney; that should appease those who want him to work on his own projects.

I miss the old, twisted and creative Tim Burton. I hate this new, predictable, phoning-it-in Burton.

It sounds like they don't need him if they're already moving ahead. The Addams Family doesn't need Burton. I would be interested in this without Burton more than I would be with Burton at this point.
