I knew that Mark Strong was popping up a lot these days, but I didn’t realize just how often until now. In addition to playing in the villain in Guy Ritchie’s SHERLOCK HOLMES this Christmas, Strong is also in KICK-ASS and ROBIN HOOD. But if that wasn’t enough, he’s just added another big film to his plate.

Strong will be the nemesis for Mr. John Carter in JOHN CARTER OF MARS, Andrew Stanton’s sci-fi epic slated for release in 2012. Talking to Collider, Strong had this to say about the role:

"I play a character called Matai Shang and he is the ruler of a group of people called the Ferns who are like the old Olympian Gods. They exist….people aren’t really sure if they exist, but basically he’s a master of the Universe. They travel ’round keeping order in the Universe. So basically he exists over and above the Martians that exist on the planet. Like I say, he’s like an Olympian God. I mean getting to play Mati Shang Master of the Universe, it doesn’t get much better than that."

Strong says the character really comes into his own in the second half of the film, and then blows up in the 2nd and 3rd movies. In addition to Strong joining up, JOHN CARTER already has an impressive cast in the form of Willem Dafoe, Thomas Haden Church, Dominic West, Samantha Morton and James Purefoy. I’m not sure how I feel about Taylor Kitsch starring as Carter, but this is definitely a project to keep an eye on.

Extra Tidbit: John Carter first showed up in print in 1912. Was sci-fi even invented back then?

Taylor is the best thing about Friday Night Lights. Although I have a hard time seeing him in any other role. But perhaps he will shine in this role as well.

This guy is awesome. Bring it on! Stole the show in Body of Lies, RockNRolla, and many more. Definitely a strong (pun intended) star contender.

He's definitely in good company with this cast
But don't forget about Lynn Collins. The lovely, lovely Lynn Collins.

But no, I'm not sold on Taylor as John Carter either.

Stardust
I'm up for anything Strong is in these days. He stole the show in Stardust (a movie I don't hear people talk about much). I think he's an excellent actor...looking forward to Mars

Awesome. This guy is a fantastic supporting actor and always stands out even in A-list heavy movies. 1st time he surprised me was in Body of Lies.

His stock is rising
I enjoy the roles he plays. He's quickly becoming one of my favorite supporting actors and say what you will be I dug Revolver and he was one of the main reasons I enjoyed it.

I also really liked Revolver and Mark Strong was one of the main reasons for me as well. His villains are always smart, bordering on cerebral. I'm looking forward to Kick-Ass and his Frank D'Amico which he describes as completely psychotic. (And for the record he can even do Jane Austen)

When i saw the headline. I was like why is this guy in everything all of a sudden. It's funny someone else noticed it. I'll be fine with this movie I'm sure. I'll judge him with Hood and Holmes though. Both I'm really looking forward to.

One of the first sci-fi stories was something titled 'Micromegas', which was written by a guy by name of Voltaire, that popped up in the mid-18th century.

So.. yeah. It existed.
