Studio Ghibli shows off a brand-new trailer for Ronja, the Robber's Daughter

01.09.2017

Studio Ghibli, the premiere Japanese animation studio that brought us such classics as SPIRITED AWAY, MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO, and PRINCESS MONONOKE is hard at work on their first-ever animated kids show, and it’s coming to Amazon Prime Video later this month!

RONJA, THE ROBBER’S DAUGHTER will be an animated adaptation of Pippi Longstocking author Astrid Lindgren’s cherished children’s book series of the same name. Directed by Goro Miyazaki - son of legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki - with an English narration by actress Gillian Anderson, this bold, new series follows the adventures of Ronja, the only daughter of a chief bandit, who grows up in the Scandinavian woodlands and eventually makes friends with the son of the rival clan’s chief.

RONJA, THE ROBBER’S DAUGHTER will mark yet another instance that Studio Ghibli has adapted a classic piece of literature after having brought Diana Wynne’s HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE, Ursula K. LeGuin’s TALES FROM EARTHSEA, and other works to the big screen.

Whoa! This is actually the first time I’m hearing about this project and my excitement knows no bounds. I am a huge Studio Ghibli fan, and can’t wait to see what manner of magic and visual splendor their creative teams will bring to the journey of Ronja.. If this animated show is anything like the books, we can expect for there to be beasts, deception, and for our heroine to befriend a few peculiar people as she wanders the wilderness.

RONJA, THE ROBBER’S DAUGHTER is set for a January 27, 2017 debut on Amazon Prime Video.

Extra Tidbit: My cousin's and I used to watch THE ADVENTURES OF PIPPI LONGSTOCKING all the time, when we would sleep over at my grandparent's place. My favorite part was when she put this special glue on the bottoms of her shoes so that sh could walk on ceilings.

So excited for this!

Thank you for sharing this! They are showing Ocean Waves in San Francisco this week, which they advertised as the only Ghibli film from the 1980's without a US release. Excited for this too!

It's not a movie, it's a TV/online series.

Wow! I think it looks fantastic. Almost on par with their movies. What cartoons have better animation? The backgrounds alone look like beautiful pieces of art.

Awesome news all around. Astrid Lindgren is one of the all-time great childrens writers, to the point where the biggest childrens book award in the world is named after her (also fun fact, the old 80's Christian Bale/Christopher Lee fantasy movie "Mio in the Land of Far Away" is also based on one of her novels).

However, I've got to point out that Studio Ghibli has adapted a lot more than 3 novels to the screen! For example, Arriety is based on the popular kid's novel "The Borrowers" which

However, I've got to point out that Studio Ghibli has adapted a lot more than 3 novels to the screen! For example, Arriety is based on the popular kid's novel "The Borrowers" which also had a BBC series and Hallmark Channel movie based off of it. When Marnie was there is also based on a very popular British kid's novel, and Ponyo is directly inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, although not quite a direct adaptation of it.

Other Ghibli films based on books include Grave of the Fireflies and Kiki's Delivery Service (both based on Japanese novels). While Ghibli films based on manga include Only Yesterday, Porco Rosso, My Neighbor the Yamadas, Whisper of the Heart, The Cat Returns From Up On Poppy Hill and The Wind Riseswere both based on Manga. I'm sure there are probably some that I am missing.
