Stupid rumor of the day: Brad Pitt as John Marston in Red Dead Redemption movie

Aug. 27, 2010by: Paul Tassi

I absolutely can't stand when gossip blogs make up CLEARLY false rumors to boost page views, giving us such great stories as OMFG EDDIE MURPHY IS THE RIDDLER or ROFL MILEY CYRUS IS BATGIRL. But this one hits a little closer to home, and is a plausible thought, at the very least.

Some site that I'm not going to reward with a link or credit is claiming that Brad Pitt is set to star as John Marston in a film adaptation of Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption old west GTA-style game. I don't believe this is in any way remotely true, but I just wanted to write this up to see what you all thought about the prospect of a film version of that game. It seems every video game is turning into a movie nowadays, but some obviously make better selections than others.

Red Dead Redemption was one of the most cinematic games I think I've ever played. The voice acting was incredible, and I could easily see this being a legitimate feature film, something the video game industry is still looking for all these years.

The problem is however, the overall plot of the game, whose basic premise of "former outlaw blackmailed by government to kill old outlaw buddies" is good, but when I found myself leading a coup on the government of Mexico, or conversely torching a settlement of rebels, I often wondered "how the hell did I end up here?" Everyone you meet will claim to help you on your quest, but only if you murder about 200 different people for them first.

That being said, if the plot was streamlined a bit, and only the most memorable and pivotal moments in the game were included, I think this could be a pretty great feature. And if Pitt decided to make this lie into truth, I wouldn't be opposed to that either.

What do you think? Should Red Dead be a film, or is it practically enough of a movie as is? And who would be your ideal John Marston?

Extra Tidbit: I'm still waiting for them to somehow orchestrate a Grand Theft Auto movie. You know they will.

AHHHH NO

I would love to see a Red Dead movie. But I find Josh Duhamel would be the best choice. Put Marston's scars on him and he'll look 100% exactly the same as John Marston.

RockSt*R Rumor Mill

Every time Rockstar releases a new game there is word of a movie being made. This is all bull crap. I don't think there will ever be a Bully, GTA or RDR movie.

Brad Pitt being in a movie based on a video game is as likely as Daniel Day Lewis being in X-Men: Origins, or Sly. Stallone's next movie being Bridget's Jones Diary 3.

Especially this kind of video game.

Oh yeah???

Sort of like how Brad was "supposed" to play the lead in Dark Void as well as produce, then the game turned out to be a glitchy crap-fest and they switched to saying that Brad's company was "developing" the property. Of course, it will be forgotten by the time you finish,,,reading,,,this,,,;;poof;;

Carl Urban or Josh Brolin

John Marston is covered in scars and grizzled as all hell. Pitt can pull a lot of characters off but i'd rather see someone like Carl Urban or Josh Brolin. Somewhere in that vein of grizzled dudes. Maybe even Jim Caviezel. But I don't think Brad is a good fit. I dunno if i really want to see this as a movie anyway. It worked best as a game storyline and a wonderful one at that.

Not Josh Brolin. Youre just saying that because of Jonah Hex. Karl Urban on the other hand is a good choice but i still think Josh Duhamel is best

I found Red Dead had elements of all our old favourite western films anyway. I'll stick with Unforgiven, 3:10 and the dollars trilogy thanks.

Brad Pitt was awesome as Jesse James. I would love to see him in another western, regardless if it is red dead redemption or a different movie.

hurm...

thaaank god there hasnt been a gta movie yet. and i dont think there ever will be since the last game kinda sucked. it'd be impossible to please the fans of the video game though.

i digress... when i first read about this, i interpreted it as the film rights for RDR were being optioned by pitt's production company, not that he was set to star or even considering. though if he wants to, i'm sure he will.

I think the plot is a lot better than Mr. Tassi says. But it is a matter of perspective. The main point is the game is fun to play. Maybe it would make an interesting movie with Pitt starring, if this were so.

It's a great game, but I'm not particularly looking forward to a movie adaptation. The game was already pretty damn cinematic, and they won't top it.

Extra Tid

I'm pretty surprised a GTA movie hasn't been made yet. It has the potential to be good if the right writer and director are in charge. Think about a GTA movie done by Michael Mann. They could actually let different directors take on the different games. Imagine if they made a Vice City movie with Brian De Palma at the helm. Could be cool.

P.S. Back in the day I always had a great idea for a teaser trailer for the film. The trailer would start out just like the opening credits to the

P.S. Back in the day I always had a great idea for a teaser trailer for the film. The trailer would start out just like the opening credits to the Sopranos. It would show a fat mob boss getting into his car and driving to work. Same song in the background. Then BAM. The car door gets ripped open and the fat mob boss is tossed from his car as the main character gets inside the van and drives off.

Red Dead has a stand-alone great story

Who cares if it was a sequel. Brad Pitt would be a great choice for the character. If it did happen, I wouldn't be surprised if it won some Oscars.

If this was in response to my comment I never said it didn't have a great stand-alone story, simply asking a question because I think both games could make good movies.

sequel?

I like these games so I'd like to see them adapted to movies but would they be making Red Dead Revolver first, Redemption is a sequel to that after all.

For once this is a very likable rumor. The game is overrated and disappointed me, but we need more good westerns.

No way!

Brad Pitt wouldn't be in this! And if I wanna watch a movie akin to this game I'll just watch The Proposition! Guy Pearce owns in that movie!

Just a stupid rumor indeed. No A-list talent would ever get close to a video game, no matter how good the story is. But if at all, I see Guy Pearce as John Marston.

I'm not saying this rumor is true, but allow me to correct a false statement:

Angelina Jolie, Mark Wahlberg, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Alec Baldwin and would disagree with you.

Who to play?

Loved the game. But I agree with you on the whole "Everyone you meet will claim to help you on your quest, but only if you murder about 200 different people for them first." It was kind of ridiculous, but fun none the less. That being said when I first heard John Marston talk I thought of Michael Madsen. Not sure if he could pull it off but his voice I felt would fit. Him or Josh Brolin.

lmao, I wouldn't cast Josh Brolin in another western after the whole Jonah Hex debacle.
