Superhero rumor of the day: will a marvelous female superhero be joining the team in Avengers 2?

Oct. 8, 2012by: Alejandro Stepenberg

Ms. Marvel shadowy artToday's superhero rumor comes from The Daily Mail, a source which only has slightly more credibility than than the dreams of an online horoscope writer.  That being said it's always better to err on the side of caution, especially when the news is this good and about a movie as big as THE AVENGERS 2.  So here goes:

Word comes that "British actresses Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson are head-to-head in a race for the most sought-after new female role in Hollywood. Emily, star of The  Young Victoria, and Ruth, from TV’s Luther, are both hotly tipped to play superhero Ms Marvel in Avengers 2, the sequel to Avengers Assemble."  Blunt was in the running at one time for the role of Peggy Carter in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, but so far as I understand she turned it down - things worked out fine as Haley Atwell was fantastic in the role, and if this new rumor is indeed the truth then things will have worked out all the better as it's about time Emily Blunt had a full-on hero all to herself.

The character of Ms. Marvel (aka Carol Danvers) has a whole host of impressive superpowers, many of which are actually related to being caught in the blast radius of a Kree device.  Could this also in turns hint at a direction that THE AVENGERS 2 will take in terms of story? I imagine it can't be easy to craft a threat big enough to unite a team like THE AVENGERS, and the Kree/Skrull storyline was already havily favored for the team's first go 'round.   Fortunately/Unfortunately it'll no doubt be many moons yet before we hear about the true direction of the sequel, so in the meantime, here's Ms. Marvel's Wikipedia page - feel free to dream away what might be, and let us know below which actress you'd go for should this race be real.

I just hope that it is real, regardless of which actress then gets the part - we definitely need more female superheroes starkly present in the public consciousness.

Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson

Extra Tidbit: Blunt was of course also meant to play Black Widow at one point, though I have no problem that Scarlett Johansson eventually ended up with the role: I've always found her work in the part to be stellar, and she's far and away as kickass as they come.

I hope Emily Blunt gets the part. Ruth Wilson is an okay actress but she's not very attractive. Blunt is gorgeous and immensely talented.

Back in August a rumor came out that "Guardians of the Galaxy" would double as an origin story for Ms. Marvel. With Carol Danvers the 'fish out of water' US pilot finding herself thrust into the Guardians' universe. And thusly set up to be the direct heroic tie between 'Guardians' and 'Avengers 2' like Thor was in Avengers.

Definitely awesome news if true.

If they bring anyone in.. I'd want to see She-Hulk or Spider-Woman.

This is a non-story.

The story comes from the Daily Mail, the movie comes out in 2015 and the script hasn't even been written yet!

To treat this as anything other than a newspaper desperately trying to generate reader interest is ridiculous.

I'm sorry and I give props to both those actresses, but to play miss Ms' Marvel, you need an actress with a knock out body (that means tall and thin with tits) of which there are few good ones available. Alice Eve comes to mind and a potential and I'd love to see Yvonne Strahovski get a shot at it.

I could see Blunt do it, maybe, but not Ruth.

I think at this point, the acting chops are more important than the body. Whoever gets the part (if the part is indeed available) is gonna have to play with the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo and Sam Jackson and look like she belongs. I would love Strahovski to get the part but if they find someone who look less like the part but has a better resume (like Blunt), I will be fine with it.
