Survival is victory in the new trailer for Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk

12.14.2016

In Christopher Nolan's latest, we travel back to World War II, when Allied forces retreated to the beaches of Dunkirk, awaiting rescue, as German forces closed in around them. Nolan is certainly no stranger to telling BIG stories (INTERSTELLAR, INCEPTION), although DUNKIRK finds the filmmaker venturing into our actual history this time around. The victory is in the survival in the newest trailer for DUNKIRK!

What can be said about Christopher Nolan that hasn't been said already? The man knows how to craft an event film. Regardless of the end result, there's always a sense that you may be missing out if you don't see one of his films in theaters. Nolan has always been hit or miss with me, but I look forward to each new picture he brings to the silver screen. These are the kinds of films that were made to be seen in the theater!

DUNKIRK opens in theaters on July 21, 2017.

Bored of both WW1 and WW2 films, for me nothing beats SPR and Schindlers list. Personally think better war films have been the more recent stuff such as American Sniper or the Hurt Locker. Personally this stuff is too broad and I prefer the personal stories of war better. Plus I hate the fact western war films seem to think WW1&2 are the most importantly wars ever in the history of anything worth telling.

True Hollywoodised Story, I guess...

Or will they show the truth:
The British Army shooting french soldiers while evacuating their own, to be certain ONLY British soldiers would be saved...
I'll wait and see.
The trailer itself is average !

Not looking as good as I would have hoped for. The teaser had me hooked, full trailer leaves somewhat "meh". Then again, there is something about Nolan's movies which seem to never work for me. I have yet to actually see one which I really like.

Nolan Fanboys going wild again

Can someone please explain what's so great about this trailer? What's the story here? Who is the main character?
Everything looks staged. It's not engaging and the music sucks.
The planes look sweet though!

Real life story. You can certainly look it up. Otherwise what's the point of spoiling the entire movie in a trailer.

P.S. I'm not a Nolan fanboy. I enjoy his Dark Knight trilogy and absolutely love The Prestige, but Inception was overrated and Interstellar was less than stellar

Could this be the new generations Saving Private Ryan??

Hopefully it gets rated R for showing the true horror of war and isn't a stupid love story like Pearl Harbor was. I trust Nolan, he rarely lets us down (with Dark Knight Rises being his worst film and possibly only really bad film)

I was thinking about the rating as well. I want it to be R, because it's about one of the most gruesome battles of WWII, but on the other hand Nolan's last R-rated film was 15 yrs. ago and since it's a major summer blockbuster, it'll likely get a PG-13 rating.

Openhand24, true statement, the only caveat being that SAVING Private Ryan grossed like a gazillion dollars and was a true event film and Hawksaw Ridge will collect a more modest gross and remain somewhat obscure by comparison.. Personally, I' m much Meir interested in seeing what will be this generation' s Thin Red Line.

I think this still looks great but echo some of the other feelings that it was a little underwhelming. I feel the blame is just the edit of the trailer itself, it just doesn't strike the right tone nearly as well as the teaser and felt a bit rushed. All in all, in Nolan we trust!

Nolan has certainly proved himself time after time that he can handle a large scale movie with a very layered script. This looks more like the same.

He certainly has proven that with a couple of his films, although I don't think there's anything layered at all about the scripts to his last couple of movies.

I was actually surprised how well the trailer worked for me. Maybe it's that I think some of those are actual planes, and not CGI, or that this is a throwback to those late-60s war movies. My one thought is I hope this thing is rated R. I don't think Nolan's made an R-rated movie since Insomnia, and this just begs for some real horrors-of-war photography.

Nolan movies are always major events for me. Can't wait to see what he does with a straightforward war movie, no twists or puzzles or gimmicks. Hopefully he'll finally land his well-deserved for Oscar nom for directing.

If it was another shitty DC movie you'd be jacking off into your own mouth.

I wonder if Rylance is playing Officer Charles Lightoller. He was the second officer on the Titanic and the most senior officer to survive the sinking. He later served in World War 1 and in retirement volunteered in World War 2 with his own personal yacht, which was requisitioned for use during the Dunkirk evacuation.

This looks like it's gonna be an absolute beast of a movie. Clearly not enough colours or capes to hold the attention of the commenters below me.

I love the ignorance of Nolan lovers. Has nothing to do with capes boy. Its just not a strong trailer. But your entitled to your opinion. So I'll leave you alone so you can go finish polishing Nolans dick.

Looking forward to the movie since it's a Nolan film, but I agree with others that this trailer didn't do much for me. Didn't affect me much and felt sort of bland. But it's typical of Nolan not to reveal much so I'm ok with a weak trailer.

This appears ok. It didn't pull me in. But Im not in love with Nolan like so many people are. Maybe a second trailer might help.

Really looking forward to this one. For the most part, I really enjoy Nolan's films. I know they all have some detractors but no film is 100% perfect in everyone's eyes. That being said, this looks like something that is so different than his usual fare, mostly in the sense that it's based on a historical event and therefore his standard method of including a cliffhanger ending or some big schtick won't/can't be used. And that's why I like Nolan so much, guy is not afraid to try something

I can't wait to see this, but the trailer didn't really work for me; something about it felt disjointed and off (despite the subject matter and images, didn't feel any emotional impact). Will give it another watch, though. It does look absolutely beautiful, and I could tell that there are going to be a number of fantastic performances, so still very excited! Will look for trailer #2.
