The trailer for SWING VOTE is up in our video section, and it's one of those strange studio pictures, with the big cast and the high-concept plot that seem to come out of the mist and humble this know-it-all movie journalist (if you can call me that). SWING VOTE has one of those highly realistic plots torn straight from the headlines where one man's vote (Kevin Costner) will decide the next U.S. President. The candidates vying for Costner's affection are played Kelsey Grammer (the current Republican candidate) and Dennis Hopper (Democrat), and their campaign managers by Stanley Tucci and Nathan Lane--who both seem born to play loyal, ratty wingmen. The film comes out August 1st, and clearly got lost in the all the summer pizzaz, but if anyone can lift an average project to unreachable heights, it's Kevin Costner. Am I right, or am I right?

Eh, when I heard the plot, I was pretty excited, and I guess it looks ok. "Pineapple Express" won't be out for another week by then, so I might check it out. I think it looks amusing at worst, and that girl looks a hell of lot less annoying then Abigail Breslin (loved her in LMS, but have strongly disliked her since).

And I wanna say you're right. But I know it's not true. But Costner is damn funny in that trailer. Somehow I figured (despite our current political field) that the party alignment would go the other way, with the plain-spoken Hopper as a Republican. Also because Hopper usually plays the more unsavory one. Anyway, anything that keeps Kevin Costner on this reinvention rebound is a good thing. He...

Also because Hopper usually plays the more unsavory one. Anyway, anything that keeps Kevin Costner on this reinvention rebound is a good thing. He spent too much time riding on the coattails of better actors like Sean Connery. The man's got actual skill as an actor, which I only emphasize because growing up he was a running joke as one of the least versatile actors whose movies we liked (the other would be Keanu Reeves, who's also proving to be better than estimated).

Truth be told about this movie, it looks like the next "Man of the Year."
