Sylvester Stallone will direct The Expendables 2 after all?

Apr. 8, 2011by: Dave Davis

After the physical punishment he put himself through while making THE EXPENDABLES, director/star Sylvester Stallone had implied that if the gang returned for a sequel, he wanted to hand directing duties off to someone else so he could just concentrate on slaughtering in front of the camera instead of multitasking the mayhem.

Sly has apparently decided not to bother getting a replacement, and will reportedly just do the job his own damn self after all.

Stallone was expected to make the cop drama HEADSHOT first, but after director Wayne Kramer (RUNNING SCARED, THE COOLER) departed due to the obligatory "creative differences", there was conjecture that Sly would take over shooting it. But it sounds like he'll instead get his green T-shirt and round up his mercenary squad for a different kind of shooting.

The EXPENDABLES sequel is expected in theaters August 17, 2012. Most of the surviving cast will likely return for further carnage, along with a new list of familiar faces ready for brief appearances and/or grisly deaths. Bruce Willis is probably going to be back as the guy giving them tons of trouble and random dudes to massacre.

Extra Tidbit: Director Walter Hill was rumored to be taking over HEADSHOT. He and Stallone almost worked together in the 1990s on a remake of John Woo's action classic THE KILLER.

hmm...

would've liked to see a new director but was afraid that he might make it too different and/or not even be as good as Sly, so I'm happy he's back. More than anything though what matters is not the director but the story, the places it goes and the twists and chances it takes... and especially the set up for the action scenes.

THANKFULLY they've got two whole new writers to bring something fresh to the table. They haven't really tested theirselves in the action world, but maybe that's a good

Don't care. Hated the first one. It was nothing more than a Stallone/Statham bromance while shunning the great Jet Li.

Although it would work either way--Stallone directing it himself or someone else stepping in--at least we know it will have balls and won't be watered down. He always takes a certain amount of criticism into account, so I wouldn't count on it being a repeat of the first film. I honestly didn't really find the "shaky cam" effect to be particularly intrusive, but that's kind of a common complaint about the first one and I'm sure Sly will put less of that in the second film. In any case, I'm

WARNING SHOT! Dolph Lundgren was my favorite character in the first. Hopefully he'll be in the second with a more impactful role.

Awesome!

I loved the first one. It wasn't deep, but who was expecting it to be? It was just a blood-pumping brawl with awesome combat, explosions, and one-liners.

My biggest gripe is that they made Jet Li look like weaksauce. He took on that huge boxer dude in Kiss of the Dragon, as well as those two gigantic blonde twins with those lightning kicks. He can take on Dolph Lundgren.

This is pretty cool! Let the rumors fly on who will be in this one. I hope Sly asks Jean Claude again, and this time I hope he doesn't screw it up and just says yes!

TAKE SOME CUES

from Roland Emmerich, Sly.

Come on, how can you guys say you wouldn't want to see The Expendables go around the world and blow bad guys up on mount everest, the eiffel tower, the statue of liberty? And in the process maybe accidentally blow a bunch of landmarks up.

Director Sly Yes!

If you listen to his commentaries and PIP on Blu-ray you see his the only one for the job. Hopefully he can make this a trilogy. Get everyone in there!

Sly needs to lay off on the shaky cam and quick editing. Bringing the film back to a more grounded (stable), and realistic style of shooting action, similar to the 80's classics we all know and love. Look at the films of John McTiernan, where suspense and tension is created through good editing and a story the audience is invested in, where the action sequences are actually fucking visible to the audience.

you know that's apparently the biggest complaint about the first one, but I didn't really have a huge problem with it... well ASIDE from the Jet/Dolph fight which I felt there was too much shaky...

However Sly as a director really takes what the fans say into account and seeing as that's the big complaint on the first one, he'll more than likely do something to address it!

The First one was so good. Fast paced action is where it's at. If you want slow action that will be awful, keep praying for a Daron Aronofski wolverine.

Look, I like Stallone and think he is talented. More at writing and directing then acting, but he is too full of himself.

How about you grow up and try to work with a different director and try not to make it all about you, you old steroid fueled bastard. God forbid he does a movie that's not all about him.

Really? He's full of himself and immature because he chooses to direct many of his own films? Did it ever occur to you that maybe they he couldn't find a director who shared his vision of the film? Maybe the various directors he met with wanted to make it overly stylized or even water it down to PG-13. Did you ever think of that? Another thing--this is something I am extremely sick of--HGH is not steroids! Two entirely different things. Why is everyone so ignorant when it comes to this subject?
