Taika Waititi confirms Planet Hulk location for Thor: Ragnarok

Over the years there have been rumours that Marvel was toying with adapting the "Planet Hulk" story-line in a future Marvel Cinematic Universe film, but those inside the Marvel camp were always quick to deny it. As development progressed on what would become THOR: RAGNAROK and Mark Ruffalo joined the cast, it started to become apparent that Marvel would at least be using some of "Planet Hulk" in their upcoming THOR sequel.

Earlier this year our own Editor-in-Chief Paul Shirey revealed that THOR: RAGNAROK would indeed contain a few "Planet Hulk" elements and several months later Marvel themselves teased Hulk's arena armour at San Diego Comic-Con. It seems pretty cut and dry at this point, but if you really need one more piece of evidence, THOR: RAGNAROK director Taika Waititi confirmed that the planet of Sakaar will be featured in the movie during an interview with Total Film (via MCU Exchange).

Sakaar was just an insane, far-off, futuristic place which was the biggest shift for the film and these characters…I was really excited when Kevin [Feige] and the rest of Marvel jumped on board with the idea to use [Jack] Kirby as a big influence in the design of the film. What’s really hard is staying authentic.

In the "Planet Hulk" story-line, Sakaar was the world on which the Hulk found himself after being blasted into space by S.H.I.E.L.D. Once there, he was enslaved and forced to fight in gladiator battles for the planet's emperor, the Red King. We're not sure exactly how these events will play out in THOR: RAGNAROK, but Total Film also adds that when Thor (Chris Hemsworth) reunites with Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), the big green guy will have already made a name for himself as a gladiator.

THOR: RAGNAROK is set for a November 3, 2017 release.

Hulk wasn't blasted into space by SHIELD in the comics as i recall. It was a decision made by the Illuminati (Professor X, Reed Richards, Doctor Strange, Black Bolt, Iron Man - plus Namor who wanted nothing to do with the idea).
How they do it in the movie is another matter - maybe Hulk will fly his jet from the end of Age Of Ultron through some random glowing rift, possibly because of Loki or something easy to explain.

Since it's a Thor film, I just hope the Hulk's storyline doesn't take up too much time since I'm looking for this film to redeem Thor and his own current storyline of films since The Dark World didn't live up to expectations.

I'd give them faith in making this a Thor film first and Hulk movie second. Look at Civil War to reassure yourself. That had almost every major player in the MCU in it, but at the heart of that movie it was a Captain America movie.

My guess is, for the plot that Ragnarok comes to Asgaard and Thor is more or less locked out. He ends up travelling to Sakaar and runs into Hulk. Helps him escape and Hulk comes back with Thor to Asgaard to free it or stop Ragnarok, or whatever the threat

Mavel solo films are usually pretty solid
Marvel ensemble movies (besides Avengers I) not so good.
I like the idea of 2 heros because you can give both character room to play and the plot doesnt get muddled as most enesemble movies do. I hope in the future they continue this 2 hero formula,

Seems like they really wanted to make a Planet Hulk movie (why wouldn't they? It was epic) but all the legal stuff forced them to compromise on a Thor/Hulk crossover.

I'll be very curious to see....

If they manage to balance all these elements into one cohesive story. If this really is Thor 3 and not a Hulk movie, then the Planet Hulk aspects can't be too involved. Somehow this has to tie into Asgard being threatened, Hulk and Thor making some kind of peace (and Hulk becoming more sentient), something about the Infinity Stones & Thanos, AND tying up all the loose ends in one entertaining movie. That's a lot of stuff and runs the serious risk of undercutting it's own premise.
