Take a closer look at The Lizard from the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man

05.24.2012

Not to be outdone by green rage monsters or caped crusaders, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN wants to remind you that it is swinging into theaters this summer as well and would very much like to take the superhero crown.

Today, we have another look at the infamous villain known as The Lizard, played by Rhys Ifans, as well as another shot of the actor with a mutated arm, and Emma Stone standing next to a hole in the wall.  Exciting stuff.

Take a look:

There's been a lot of backlash against the reboot, from the lack of a lab coat and snout on the film's villain, the revisitation of an origin story, and the decry of "too soon!" in relation to bringing the webhead back after Sam Raimi's SPIDER-MAN films.

"Look, there are always cynical people, but that’s part of the game. Spider-Man in a perennial character, and ultimately what our film is about is a kid who grows up looking for his father and finds himself. That’s a Spider-Man story we haven’t seen before. We’re coming at it from a different angle. It’s not a remake of Sam’s movie," says director Marc Webb.

I know I can be cynical, even snarky, when it comes to movies, but the truth is that THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN just looks boring to me.  It's nothing against the cast or crew, whom I feel are all very talented individuals.  The concept of another origin tale, no matter how "different" it may be, just feels...exhausting.  There are plenty of people excited for this, however, and I respect that. I think there were people excited for COWBOYS AND ALIENS, too.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN opens on July 3, 2012.

No it's the live action version of Ditko's Lizard, the ORIGINAL version. Just because he doesn't have the snout and isn't the version you're familiar with doesn't make him any less the Lizard or any more a "Goomba". I wish people would do their research before bashing something. I love how far back they're going, makes me think these guys might actually be FANS OF THE COMIC instead of changing everything like Raimi did.

Everything about this movie makes me relate it more and more to 'X-Men: First Class'.

-Early reboot after a terrible third film.
-Early skepticism over villain. (Not counting Magneto, but come on, Sebastian Shaw? Great performance, but had no expectations.)
-Heavy deviation from the comics. (But doesn't Nolan's Batman do this? If done right, it always works.)
-Defensive marketing with overall terrible posters.
-Young eye candy in Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone. :))))
-Lastly and most

-Lastly and most importantly, lining up a promising cast and director.

The only difference is, the public embraced 'First Class' while they consistently bash this film before they've even seen it. All I'm saying is to give it a chance.

I think the difference here is each clip and trailer of First Class got you more and more jazzed. Im hearing and feeling a lot less interest from what we've seen. Mind you, I am as big a hypocrite as the next guy and will be there opening weekend. But the actual footage isnt as "amazing" as expected.

LMAO! This might be the Spider-Man origin we've never seen before (or even wanted), but it IS the Hulk origin that we have already seen before with Ang Lee's Hulk.

You say that there are plenty of people excited for this but, honestly, I don't know any of them. This is by no means a condemnation of the film or a scientific way to measure its potential box office but I don't know anyone that has any overwhelming desire to see this. Including my 8 and 10 year old sons.

I think the marketing for this has been awful. I have seen some really cool imagery and scenes from this, but they have created virtually no anticipation or excitement for the film as far

I think Garfield was a cool choice and the direction of the film and its aesthetics seem really interesting.

Other than those who jump to its defense in the boards here, I only know one person who I've spoken to who is looking forward to the film and he is a genuine film nerd like most of us here. Other than him, I haven't heard from anyone I know that is looking forward to this. However, when the trailer played at The Avengers there was some excitement for it, so you never know.

I can honestly say I have no plans of seeing it in theaters unless the buzz is absolutely phenomenal. It's one I'll

And, as I've stated before, I am all for the talent involved in the film. I think they're all great [link] just wish they were in a better-looking film.

Had they gone The Incredible Hulk route and skimmed through the tired-ass origin bullshit and got down to business I'd have an entirely different outlook on this film and might actually be excited for it.

Oh, and put a fucking snout, some monstrous teeth, and a lab coat on the Lizard.

come again

I agree with end comments of this story . . . I'm simply not interested in this movie. After having watched the many trailers I only liked two of them and then when all was done I forgot that this movie is coming out. I know Batman is coming out and that G.I. Joe got delayed however Spider-Man is an after thought.

Nah. I think by the end of the summer I'll still be excited for The Avengers. It has eclipsed almost everything else for me, although there are PLENTY I am looking forward to. But, I'm pretty sure The Avengers will be my big winner for the summer season. Okay, MAYBE Ice Age: Continental Drift.

-As far as too soon goes, why is it too soon. There is a decent spider-man film sandwiched between the two turds that are the first and third films in the shitty Sam Raimiverse. I say let's finally do it right and if it's done right why wait? Much like the Punisher could be rebooted and done properly and I would welcome it.

Geez, I can't believe I'm defending a Spider-Man movie. Of course I could be wrong and it'll be complete trash, but I'll give it (unlike MIB3) a chance.

I really wanted to remain optimistic about this film, but...

...it just has "fail" written all over it. Combined with rumours of poor test screenings and the underwhelming footage so far (was I the only one who thought the CGI was garish and quite appalling, particularly the background effects, in that 4-minute "super preview" clip?) - it just seems destined to disappoint, especially stacked against Avengers and Nolan's Final Chapter.

YES!

A Lab Coat and Snout do make a difference, but guess what? He does have a Lab Coat on at the start, but it gets torn off from bullets and smashing through walls.

The thing that made me want to see it was him saving that kid by telling him to put the mask on and climb out of the burning car. It had some heart to it!

You assume nobody is familiar with it, when MANY of us ARE. It looks like shit, plain and simple. So shut the hell already. You sound like a broken record.

I have no idea how this will do at the box office

When Raimi's SPIDER-MAN came out I was blown away by the over $100 million weekend tally. I did not expect that at all. Many here @ joblo are lukewarm-to-scornful about this remake, and I'm kinda in that vein as well... but I'm curious to see how it turns out. Both as a movie and as a box office draw.
BTW no coat and no snout isn't a big deal for me. There are always changes to the comic-book origins for film, and things can turn out well regardless.

Personally I LOVE that they're going with Ditko's Lizard and losing the snout...for now. The Lizard is there to mirror Peter's transformation and getting the ugly side of it, but also being someone he knows well enough. If they make him TOO Lizard-like they lose that humanity and familiarity, and in turn lose a lot of possible sympathy for the character. I like that it's a mix between man and monster rather than full-on monster. Not to say it wouldn't be cool to see him with a snout later on,
