Take a gander at the first Adventures of Tintin trailer!

05.17.2011

I'll admit to being a TINTIN neophyte. I know next to nothing about the mythology of the character but I remember one time incurring the wrath of Garth Franklin over at Dark Horizons when I said I wasn't a fan. I should clarify: it's not that I'm not a fan, I'm just clueless. I look for that all to change as later this year sees the release of Steven Spielberg's THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN.

The film boasts a damn impressive pedigree including Mr. Spielberg himself, Peter Jackson producing and a script from Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish (ATTACK THE BLOCK). Just on the basis of that alone, I'd want to see this film.

My only hesitation so far is the mo-cap. Why mo-cap? It seems to me the only reason this film was done in mo-cap was because Spielberg wanted to try it out. And I guess, when you're Steven Spielberg or Bobby Brown, that's your prerogative. But I think I'd be far more interested in this as a live-action movie. But that's just me. Take a look at the trailer below...

It looks interesting.. the animation looks like every other mo-cap movie I've seen in the past 5 years.

I love the talent involved, but why couldn't they just do it live action?

Okay, I don't know a damn thing about Tintin prior to Spielberg and Jackson deciding to collaborate. But I am stoked, because it looks like a visual feast, and this is the very definition of a teaser. While I'm not always a fan of his work, I still think Steven Spielberg is the seminal director of our time, and when he wants to he can still bring his A-game to whatever project he's working on. I hope this is one of those occasions.

Whether or not mo-cap is good, the cartoony visuals are definitely working. But we all know about mo-cap's drawbacks. And right now that's my main concern.

I have to disagree...

Most of time I don't see the purpose of MoCap, but for a fantasy action-adventure movie like this one, which is based off a cartoon/comic, mocap was the right way to go.

And I agree with Sampson...

I know it's a teaser, but the mo-cap isn't doing anything for me. This just feels like it could have been more epic as a live action movie. And it's in 3D none the less. Lame. Some movies are good as cartoon some are just terrible and some are decent. So far, this falls into the decent one.

Sure, the mo-cap may be unnecessary, but it still looks like good, fun family movie. Are they still planning on making a trilogy? I read Jackson was going to direct a sequel, but that was before he took up directing The Hobbit after Del Toro dropped out. And Spielberg has the Abe Lincoln movie he's working on.

Hmm, it's hard to tell from this trailer but it looks like they may have the zombie eye syndrome from films like Polar Express and Beowulf.

This is strange, considering WETA did Avatar and is now doing this. Why wouldn't they just use the same techniques? Maybe they have and they're just saving all the goods for an official trailer.

Anyway, I don't see the point of doing something like this all CG unless you're going to stylize it. Seems like they should have pushed it a little further

The reason it worked in avatar is because they weren't doing mo-cap and facial animation for people, they were doing it for big blue aliens, which is much more forgiving.

I completely disagree. The technique is the same, regardless of what the character looks like.

Sure, it might be a LITTLE bit more challenging to get over the Uncanny Valley with human characters, but now that it's been achieved there's no excuse to not have it in everything they do going forward. Especially since it's being done by the same studio.

Mo-Cap-Schmo-Cap

I don't care who is doing it, Mo Cap is crap.

If you want your computer generated characters to look real...do live action...hello.

I know everyone is striving for the CGI actor that can fool the audience but that has not happened yet.

Mo Cap looks worse than standard CGI the characters just do not move right, which is ironic since they are supposedly captured from live actors.

Maybe its not so much actual movement but what our brains expect to see. So when we see Mo Cap Vs lets

I have yet to see Mo Cap that works except in small doses like a single character or section of a movie.

I have no clue who Tin Tin is either and doubt I will see this movie, especially with the 3D format.

Umm, no. Mo Cap looks much more real than keyframe animation because it's literally a 1:1 copy of actual human movement.

What you're talking about is facial animation, which is what causes the Uncanny Valley effect.

Looks pretty good so far. As far as mo cap, seeing The Polar Express in theaters was such a great experience, I think that film is so underrated and will always hold up as a great Christmas film. By the way that Sidekick commercial SUCKS.

Really bland trailer

What I found weird is that you hear characters talking yet you don't see any of their mouths moving. Also, Mo-Cap was supposed to be the lazy and "inexpensive" way to animate CGI movies, but it's turned out to be more expensive than either live action or CGI alone. Not to mention the creepy, weightlessness of the characters and their blank, dead stares.

Don't know WHAT to think

I know I'm in the minority, but Spielberg is too "PC" and quite unimpressive as a director for the last 15 years. Jackson's latest was terrible (and the last two LotR flicks weren't so great), and with mo-cap?! Ugh! I'll reserve more opinion when I know more...

i agree with mike sampson. why use mo-cap ? this film would have looked the exact same if it was computer animation. unnecessary use of the technology.

So true man! I was waiting to see if the faces would be different with Jackson on board because Gollum looked great but there's still something haunting about the faces and glossy about the eyes.

Just regular styleised CGI would have worked so much better but even still Moffat and Wright on script Spielberg on directing and that amazing cast and luch landscaps and setting it still think it'll be worth the watch!

Looks cool. And I like how everyone is saying how cool it is to have Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish writing for Spielberg. What about Steven Moffat? No love for us Doctor Who fans!?!?!!!!
Still, the film looks cool. I just think this trailer was put together pretty badly. What I saw looked cool but I need a full length to be sold on this one.

My biggest complaint about MoCap has been the 'dead eyes' effect so distractingly obvious in Zemeckis movies. But this the best I've seen to date, the characters just cartoony enough to brighten their faces. I'm expecting a visually impressive, tightly written family adventure film. The genre at which Spielberg excels above all others.

Looks like the kind pulp adventure Indiana Jones 4 should have been. I like what I see and hope Spielberg knocks it out of the park.

Oh!

I didn't realize Tintin was being played by Tilda Swinton. Or is it the girl from La Roux? They're practically twins.

i´m not even the least interested in this flick, as a fan of the comic books, i think this would really work well with real people, why not make this a live-action film???? i bet it would work so well, but alas, stupid 3D is all over the movies nowadays, so, i can only hope for someone lucid to do a live-action version of tintin a few years from now...

btw, tintin looks horrible, even milu looks good, but tintin doesn´t even look like tintin :S

I am sure that it is not just coincidence that at no point in that trailer could you see anyone's mouth moving when they speak. If that hasn't improved from Polar [link] then I am not sure how bad I want to see this. The only reason it really worked in Avatar is because they were giant blue aliens. Other than that, the movie looks cool I guess - though the trailer didn't really show what the story is at all.

Uncanny Valley

I am liking the John Williams Vibe
I am liking that they've mostly solved the "dead eyes" problems (that final shot is gold)
And I am liking that it has this big adventure vibe

But I'm not over-psyched yet, I'd like to see more footage. Damn you, teaser trailers !!
