The first teaser poster for director Sam Raimi's OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL has arrived, which features a number of images reminiscent of the world created by author Frank L. Baum.  The prequel to the classic WIZARD OF OZ focuses on the Wizard himself, Oz, as played by James Franco, documenting his journey to the magical land and subsequent rise to ruling it.

Take a look:

The film also stars Michelle Williams as Glinda, Mila Kunis as Theodora, Rachel Weisz as Evanora, and Zach Braff as, uh, Frank.  Given that we haven't seen, well, anything from the film so far, it's hard to judge based on a poster alone.  Talentwise, the film has the goods, so that's a definite bonus.  Raimi will be on hand at Comic Con next week to discuss the film, so expect a teaser trailer at the minimum.

OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL clicks its heels into theaters on March 8, 2013.

Michelle Williams is one sexy witch...

Extra Tidbit: Would you be for or against a live-action remake of the original? I'm honestly all for it, even as much as I love the original. It would be really cool to see what could be done with today's technology and talent.

Since when was Sam Raimi a visionary? He can direct an entertaining film to be sure, but its not like Spider-man broke ground on a new way of film making.

"Would you be for or against a live-action remake of the original?"

Er... the "original" *is* a live-action remake.

I just have a feeling that this will turn out to be another ALICE IN WONDERLAND (expensive to make, incredibly successful at the box office, but ultimately hollow, unnecessary and fake-looking). Hope I'm wrong on this!

I really would not like to see a remake. The original has too much of a following, and is timeless.
In regards to the poster, I really fucking dig it.

This is is the one I'm watching out for next year.

And it looks like the aesthetics are gonna match the film, which was my biggest question.
Michelle Williams is inspired casting there, I'd have bet $5 it would be Amy Adams, especially since it's Disney.

Why does it have to be Franco?

He's decent in some roles and sometimes a little funny, but Franco is one of the most underwhelming actors out there. He'd honestly be half decent in a high school play... maybe. Honestly, I don't understand how I'm the only one who is endlessly bored by him in all of his roles.

The rest of the cast, though, seems like they'll make a good fit in this. Williams, at least, is my saving grace here.

Largely I'll agree with you, but he was just spellbinding in 127 Hours, and a hoot in Pineapple Express. I think he just has to give a damn, and for the most part he doesn't. He can do really well when he tries, so here's hoping.

No remake. There are a few films that are as classic and as well known as Wizard of Oz. Sure you can update the effects and story, but it would be hard to top the verison everyone knows. Does anyone really prefer Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Facotry to the original with Gene Wilder? Wizard of Oz is one of the few films too classic, like Godfather or Back to the Future, to ever dare remake.
