Updated: Take a look at this classic unused Wolverine costume!

09.13.2013

UPDATE: Image removed at request of original source

I remember sitting in French class looking at an old Wizard Magazine reading a feature which was basically their casting choices for an X-MEN movie. This is long before one was ever actually thought of. I wondered if they would use the costumes I was accustomed to seeing in the comics. At that time the team looked like this:

I always thought they would use that costume or the suit below:

Turns out they had plans to, and luckily we get to sneak a peek at what Logan was originally going to wear in THE WOLVERINE. Thanks to MovieWeb reader Gil Brooks, Legacy Effects digital modeler and sculptor Adam Ross got permission to show off the unused costume that was actually made using a 3D printer. Here is the comment that Ross gave to the site:

"This is the costume that I modeled for The Wolverine. It was unused in the final cut of the film. Everything in the box is digitally modeled and 3d printed. There is no cloth or leather used in these parts, but rather texturing added in ZBrush. (Photo shown with permission)."

I've seen a lot of X-fans comment that costume would be kind of silly on screen. This is kind of hard to judge since we can't see what the costume looks like on. But I'm loving the mask and hope that one day we get to see it.

Could have at least tried it on.

I'm just saying that a little tease couldn't hurt anybody.

more silly than a guy wearing a bat suit? The classic Wolverine suit would have been awesome.

There are some things that...no matter HOW silly they probably look, you just desperately want a character to wear. And this is one of those things. I don't care that it doesn't make sense, that the rest of the x-men go around without masks, that he has nothing to hide, that it's totally a hold-over from domino-mask wearing superheros. I don't care. I want to see Wolverine wearing that some day. I just do.

I had a strong hunch that The Wolverine would end with Logan finally donning the famous costume. The way it played out in my head was that it somehow tied into the Japanese/samurai setting, maybe given as a gift as mentioned by Cathelotte below. I was extremely disappointed that it didn't happen, because I'm a firm believer that the costume could not only work on screen, but would have brought the house down at the end of the film.

In order to make the mask work you'd need 2 of them. One that looked normal when he faced the camera & one that looked normal in side profile. You can tell in the comics & by looking at the mask in the photo that it would look stupid from certain angles.

What do you mean, the ears would look strange from the side or something? Or the nose? The design is different when seen from certain angles?

The ears would look strange from the side. If they designed them to look good from the side, it'd look strange from the front. Comic artists have the ability to draw it good from any angle . . .

Now that you mention it...

It IS kind of weird that with all the X-Men and Wolverine films, we've never seen the classic mask. It almost makes me think what would it be like if Warners/DC thought Batman's costume was too "unrealistic".

Batman leads a double life while Logan doesnt and therefore has no choice but to disguise himself.

first off, Sweet ass mask. secondly -I had that Wizard issue where they casted who they wanted in the XMen film, the only one that actually happened was Patrick Stuart as Professor X. but the other casting was cool to me at the time. Michael Beihn as Cyclops, Nicole Kidman as Jean, Van Damme as Gambit, Danzig as Wolverine, Dolph Lundgred as Colossus, Rutger Hauer as Magneto, Tia Carrera as Pyslocke, Vader as the Juggernaut, and Clint Eastwood as Cable. Damn Im trying to remember all they choose

I really doubt anyone (short of trolls whodont give a crap about the character) would stick their heads in The Lions Maw of saying a traditional comic costume looks stupid. I don't know who is at Fox, but it is a huge disservice to not at least give people what they say what they have wanted a masked Wolverine for years.

Wish They Had Used It.

I'm one of those people who appreciates Bryan Singer for avoiding the cartoon costumes in the early 2000's. But as time has passed and the realistic thing has come full circle, and with The Avengers being true to the source and pulling off colorful costumes, I can't help but really want to see Logan don this suit. Jackman has played Wolverine so many times that he IS The Wolverine. It would only make sense for his portrayal of the character to reach completion by donning the iconic Wolverine

Watch one of the superhero beat down vids on YouTube to get a sense of what it would like on film. And I assume those vids are on a microscopic budget in comparison to the Fox productions.

Was really hoping they would use the famous costume in The Wolverine, considering Mangold is a huge fan of the material himself. Thought for sure we would see flash backs of Wolvie with his Sensei in a ninja outfit resembling this. Then later on in the film, him remember his past and the outfit still intact.

Looks excellent.
There's really nothing to stop Fox from making an X-Men movie that's exactly like the comics. It wouldn't need to be the main movie continuity, just a stand alone story. Would be nice to see one direct translation of the source material in this case, just to show it can be done.

It would be nice to see this on a mannequin or person to get a better idea of what it would look like, but I don't think it's silly at all. I've spoken to a bunch of people about comic book movie costumes and "realism"; I think the costumes in X-Men First Class were done really well, and Captain America's outfit in Captain America: The First Avenger sort of married that comic book look and a real-world one nicely. The folks at Bat in the Sun also crafted a very cool Wolverine outfit for their

Oh Yeah, The Reason It Keeps Getting Removed...

This costume will probably make an appearance in Days Of Future Past considering part of the story takes place in the 1970's with Wolverine, I love always having the answer.

It seems

It wasn't going to be more than a 'cameo' appearance, to please the fans...
They wrote it wasn't clothes, but a 3D print...
So the yakusas would have offered it to Wolvie and he would have 'politely said no' or something.

Seeing the mask in the box it's looks pretty sweet, but I feel it might look kinda silly on hugh Jackman. Hard to say. I could be wrong.

Awesome

I think that would have been awesome if they could have made it work. Love what they've done costume-wise with the X-Men and Wolverine movies, but to see him in a classic suit would have been a huge geekgasm.

Wow, that' looks fantastic! Like most people who are commenting, we really can't tell how great or silly it would look on screen, especially if you make Hugh Jackman wear it after being so used to seeing him in a black suit or street clothes for over ten years. Still, here's hoping they make some version of Wolverine wear this thing in Days of Future Past.

WTF! I cant believe they didn't use this! If the Batman costume could work in broad fucking daylight like in the dark knight rises than this could have worked, given the right lighting and scene/situation. I've been wanting to see this costume on screen for so damn long. Dammit, this really bums me out........will we ever get to see jackman in a real wolverine costume?

I love that look. If you want to see kind of what it would look like on screen go over to YouTube & look up Bat in the Sun productions. They produce a show called Superpower Beat Down. They're live action mini film where they pit comic book & movie character against each other with the fan's vote deciding the outcome. They have Wolverine vs Predator with Wolverine in that style costume, Wolverine vs Batman with Wolverine in his X-Force suit, Deadpool vs Batman, Gambit vs Nightwing & even

Not using the sillier elements from comic books for their live action movies is why Marvel has been so successful. Understanding the differences in mediums in vital. ..Well there is the ridiculous Captain America, but overall they have been pretty good at understanding the differences between film and the funny books.

That's the whole point.
He SHOULD try it, then say something like 'shit like this don't work in real life, bub'...
But AT LEAST try and wear it, even for a couple of minutes, to please us (or prove us it actually wouldn't work, like the first Cap costume in First Avengers)...

Looks great. I don't think it would work for the Singer vision of x-men, but if the series gets rebooted this would be an awesome choice. It would be cool to see a version of Wolverine in this costume fighting along side the Avengers.
Not going to lie, I would love to wear that for Halloween.

I seriously dont see that costume work in any context. Unless the next movie will have a light hearted moment where he shows at a Halloween party dressed in it to kill some baddies and vanish into the shadows.
But then again why does Wolverine need a disguise?
