Tarantino on Sunshine

Sep. 8, 2009by:

SkyMovies has a running series going on right now where they've roped in Quentin Tarantino to sit and talk about movies they're screening. I enjoyed his take on THERE WILL BE BLOOD, but in this video he’s reviewing something more near and dear to my heart, Danny Boyle’s new sci-fi classic, SUNSHINE.

I know that it should bother me, hearing Tarantino spout of infinite amounts of movie knowledge at his typical speed-of-light talking style, but I actually really enjoy hearing him review movies. I’m not sure what it is, maybe it is the fact that he knows everything about every actor and every film ever made, but mainly it’s because his praise and criticism is usually dead on. If he ever gets tired of the directing thing, the man should definitely retire as a film critic.

Extra Tidbit: Really Quentin, you knew Hiroyuki Sanada's two previous stage names off the top of your head? Uh huh.

Not working.

Damn it, these videos never load for me; just a void of nothingness.

Anyone have any advice? This is literally the only site where videos are simply not there, consistently.

that thinks QT is starting to look like Hugh Heffner...

He really is looking old these days.

Gran Torino

I'm glad someone said it. I'd really like to see what Tarentino's thoughts on Gran Torino are.

without watching his review, i loved sunshine dude. but i fucking hated how it ended. it turned into a shitty slasher flick. up until that, it did for me what few other sci-fi movies do (eg. bladerunner, 2001 etc.)

I actually really dig Sunshine (third act and all), the only negative being the straight lift of the villain from Event Horizon. But you got to admit, the visuals are pretty damn phenomenal.

yeah no shit, the visuals were better in the first two acts though. they became unbelievable in the third act.

I've been saying this same basic thing, weak act 3, since the movie came out. I still like the movie though b/c the good outweighs the bad.

I kind of agree with him on the 3rd act. They had a perfectly workable antagonist with the second officer and his selfish panic attacks. They could have developed that a bit more, played out the destructive elements of humanity pushed over the limit, rather than resorting to the "monster" which was a bit over the top.

I do love the ending, though.

This is the FIRST review out of the series, where he's reading off of monitor. Anybody notice that? The "alright" isn't even in this. His There Will Be Blood and Taxi Driver reviews are off the top of his head. I wonder why he decided he wanted to read this one.

I was just gonna say about The Beach. That was Garland's first novel. The novel was amazing. The movie... not so much. Sunshine was great though.

I actually love the hell out of the whole movie as a whole and wouldn't change a thing, but I can understand Tarantino's position on the third act.

Whatever

QT is great analyzing movies. And he has HIS oppinions and so do everyone else. I for one liked the third act as well.
Anyways. Didn't Boyle and Garland also kinda work together on The Beach???
Garland's book but John Hodge's screenplay :-)

When I first saw the movie, I was a bit let down by the 3rd act as well (Other than the final shot, which I loved). It was a little too, for lack of a better word "weird". Not the fact that the "monster on board" was brought in, but the way it was filmed. However, I still loved the movie and picked it up immediately after for my collection. Watching the movie again however, the final act didnt feel to out of place afterwards. I dont blame people for feeling sideswiped by it the first time

But upon subsequent viewings, you'll find it doesnt feel too out of place and it doesnt prevent the film from being a modern sci-fi masterpiece. Very under rated movie, and a great film.

p.s. yeah, I could stand to watch Tarantino review a lot of films.

i really enjoyed this movie. i've seen it a couple o' times since the original theatrical release and enjoyed even more. yes, the 3rd act is off the mark compared to the other 2 acts...but, it doesn't matter to me in the least.

great movie.

I agree with QT about the third act. To me its like a better version of Event Horizon. Plus its got none of the philosophy and sense of wonder the first two acts had. Its Hollywood's way of ending a film. Its not bad, but it goes from a near classic to a lesser film in a split second, even if you see it coming. Still very good sci-fi film overall.

All I can think about...

...is the scene from "Talledega Nights" where Will Farrell says he doesn't know what to do with his hands. Geez Quentin...sit on 'em.

It's a highly enjoyable review, but I definitely disagree with his opinions regarding the third act. I thought it was a fantastic finish to a brilliant film.

Freaking brilliant! But I love that final act, and I think its more than just a "monster after the crew" type of thing, its implications are more cerebral and symbolic then that!

That being said, I love Tarantino talking movies, so freaking knowledgeable!

Fun to watch but I'm sick of the bitching about the 3rd act of the film. It's perfect.

Tarantino really is a great reviewer, and his comments about Boyle and Romero are hilarious! That said, I actually disagree with his (and, it seems, everybody else's) views on the third act of the film.

[SPOILERS]

I've heard people complain that the genre shift was completely unexpected, that the villain came out of nowhere, etc. I have no idea how anybody came to this conclusion. When I first watched the film, I saw the "bad guy" coming from a mile away. I mean, really, how can

When I first watched the film, I saw the "bad guy" coming from a mile away. I mean, really, how can someone watch that transmission from the crazy dude with no skin and NOT think he'll be showing up later in the film? Especially when they find the ship and discover that it's in perfect working order, with enough food, water, and whatnot to sustain life? Honestly, I think the third act is just the natural progression of all that came before.

But hey, that's just my opinion.

Oh, Quentin...

...even when I disagree with you, boy do I like to here you ramble.

Regardless, Sunshine is still a fantastic film.

P.S. Really hope QT casts Cliff Curtis in his next film.

I agree 100% that this film's 3rd act killed what could have been a great movie. Sunshine started off great and ended as a just a decent sci-fi flick.
