Tarantino talks

05.11.2009

Quentin Tarantino will be showing off INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS to the Cannes faithful in about a week and a half (May 20th to be exact) and in preparation of that debut, he's making the rounds and talking up his latest film. He spoke to the New York Times for their Sunday edition and, as usual, Quentin was nothing short of...quotable. Here's some of what he had to say:

- On the title's spelling: "Basterds should be spelled with an e!" As for the word "inglourious" he said, "I can’t tell you stuff like that. It’s a movie thing."

- But what about all the misspellings and grammatical mistakes in the script? "I’ll proofread it when we publish it," he explains saying he typed it with one finger on a typewriter.

- Is it a remake of the 1978 Enzo Castellari film of the same name? "I love [the original], don’t get me wrong, but it’s not a remake," adding in true Tarantino fashion, "It will be in the original category at the Oscars."

- Hubris aside, Tarantino busted out another trademark, theorizing possible sequels. "I have a half-written prequel ready to go if this movie’s a smash."

There's plenty more in the article including notes that while they strived to remain somewhat historically accurate, 90% of the production design is based on movie references. You can read the article for yourself here.

Extra Tidbit: Tarantino at one point though about scrapping the movie and making a 12-hour miniseries.

Go Tarantino!

Before I comment on this article I'll comment on all the people below me who say Death Proof sucked. There was nothing about Death Proof that sucked. It was classic Tarantino from start to finish. When I first saw Pulp Fiction, I fell asleep on it. I love that movie though. I've seen it all the way through at least 10 times. Anyway, I think he should be doing movies back to back. We need more movies from him before he gets too old.

This movie will be entertaining, to say the least. There's no denying that.

Tarantino speaks his mind. I admire him for that. There's a lot of fakes out there holding back what they wanna say. QT's def not one of those dudes.

A man's entitled to his opinion. So what if he endorsed Eli Roth? He liked "Hostel." "Death Proof" fell flat on a lot of fronts, but what it lacked in horror thrills and Kurt Russell it made up for with trademark Quentin [link] and a rousing chase scene straight out of the '70s. I still wish Adam Sandler had signed on for this thing, but Roth's not a terrible actor in my opinion.

Tarantino is famous for his bloated ego, and for every movie being an homage to some other movie. But I also believe he is one of the truly gifted filmmakers, who somehow just knows how to put a show on. While his last effort wasn't his best, I have to admit the entire project seemed a little iffy (still one of the best theatrical experiences I've had in a while).

Now by his very nature, people are gonna be disappointed by Tarantino. There are people who are going to not like his latest, because it's not "Pulp Fiction," "Kill Bill," or "The Dirty Dozen." But there are also probably going to be people who like it. Will it be better than "Star Trek"? I doubt it'll gross that much. But it might still be enjoyed more by some.

AGREE WITH SLIMBO

yea, I totally forgot about that movie, the second half was pretty bad. :) Right on about Eli Roth, that's part of my hesitation with BASTERDS

hope its good

actually nodirectionhome, "death proof" was the biggest snore-fest and a complete waste of time. i want this to be good, cuz when tarantino is on point - he's spectacular. but then he does something awful like Death Proof or endorses Eli Roth. hopefully this will be the tarantino we ALL love.

One finger typers, unite !!

Im interested to hear reviews on this film, considering it took so long to complete. Personally, the guy has yet to put out a bad film; I'll give hime a slide on JACKIE being that it was his vanity project. But I'm not yet sold on BASTERDS, it kind of seems in the same vien.
