Tarantino wants to do a slavery spaghetti western

Feb. 15, 2010by:

Once the Oscar buzz around INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS dies down, Quentin Tarantino will have the task of trying to figure out what genre he wants to reinvent next. He's talked about doing a gangster movie in the “Pretty Boy Floyd” era, and he’s also mentioned, wanting to do a western, though I will maintain that KILL BILL was perhaps the greatest western of the last twenty years or so. It just happened to take place in the east for the most part.

But a western would seem to be what Tarantino is leaning toward, and he spilled his thought process behind how he’d want to do it to the NY Daily News.

"I'd like to do a Western. But rather than set it in Texas, have it in slavery times. With that subject that everybody is afraid to deal with. Let's shine that light on ourselves. You could do a ponderous history lesson of slaves escaping on the Underground Railroad. Or, you could make a movie that would be exciting. Do it as an adventure. A spaghetti Western that takes place during that time. And I would call it 'A Southern.'"

A western that involves slaves escaping on the Underground Railroad? I wonder what badass motherf*cker Tarantino will turn to for the lead role? Whatever, I’m all for it, it sounds just wacky enough for Tarantino to make it worthwhile, and I think we should hold off on KILL BILL 3 for a while now anyway.

Extra Tidbit: I'd actually really like to see him go sci-fi.

Hey moron, did you see the part where your hero QT said it was set in slavery times? Guess what? So was "Posse". And the town they were trying to save was filled with former slaves.

Seriously, try to think things through before you type.

Posse took place in 1898. Slavery had been over for almost 40 years. Your comment is wrong.

hey dipshit, since schooling you would be too easy i figure I'll let IMDB do it for me:
POSSE
A group of mostly black infantrymen return from the Spanish-American War with a cache of gold.

A preachy anti-slave "western" sounds terrible. Can we please get the long awaited sequel to Kill Bill already?

At the rate he makes movies and the rate he comes up with ideas, well probably see this released by 2020-2025, so if you want to guess who would star, look to today's child actors

There's only one person who needs to be in this movie...

Ive been wanting him to do a western for a looong time. I will agree on Kill Bill 2 kinda being a western though. Denzel as a slave would be cool, hes good at delivering badass dialogue. An Alien movie from Tarantino could be cool as well

you know - the double comments happen for me when i make an original comment then go back and reply to someone else's comment. i'm not much a tech guy - but it would seem to be an easy fix. just a thought for the web design team running this site.

Does Tarantino really think he's going to shed light on slavery with his movie? It's like saying "Inglourious Basterds" gave us a second look at the Nazis. The movie was excellent and sure it had Nazis in it but to pretend it had some social commentary about the Nazis is just deluded. Do something else, man.

Umm...

People are complaining that this could be "preachy"? What in Tarantino's repertoire would ever make you think he would preach about how bad we treated black people then?

Did you even see Jackie Brown?

I dont think it was his point to "shed new light" on Nazis with Basterds, however, he didnt shy away from what most of us think of when we think of Nazis. He portrayed them as monstrous villains who were undeserving of sympathy. THAT was what was great about it. Which led to the Basterds going on rampage, and the epic finale in the theater. I could definitely see him doing the same thing with Slave drivers. Like I said, Basterds wasnt a social commentary, more-so just a fantasy with great

Like I said, Basterds wasnt a social commentary, more-so just a fantasy with great pay-off, and this could easily go the same route. Anyways, I'm definitely down for whatever he does. Easily my favorite director, and has yet to do wrong in my book. (Yeah, call me a fanboy...whatev)

Undaground is how I spelled it because of ebonics. I know its messed up, but after how QT spelled Inglourious, it's fine I'm sure.

QT's Harriet Tubman's Undaground Railroad!

Halley Berry stars as the sexiest Harriet Tubman ever, Sam L. Jackson pops up infrequently throughout the movie as a badass (presumably Frederick Douglas) and Denzel as one of the slaves escaping...and probably killing a lot of white people. A hard R for language, graphic violence, and some sexual content...and massive amounts of dialogue.

If memory serves me, Tarantino has about a 3-4 year average between films so I wouldn't be expecting anything anytime soon. I'd like to see him do a good old fashioned monster movie. Just imagine Tarantino doing a Van Helsing story.

Could be interesting...

I thought Inglorious Bastards was gonna be lame and then it turned out to be fantastic. So I've learned to just go with the flow and I'm game for whatever Tarrantino does. His only stumble in my book was Death Proof.

Westerns are my favorite sub-genre and Tarantino would be a nice little footstep in the big golden pond. I loved his little cameo in Sukiyake Western Django.

Sci Fi...

The trick is that he isn't the kind of director that works in front of Green Screens and overseeing CGI. I think he would have zero interest or ability to do another Avatar or Star Wars.
He likes his characters and dialog.

I'm sure he could come up with an angle that would work for him... trying to do a retro 1950's scifi with rubber suited monsters? The Creature From the Black Lagoon? Frankenstein, but done with makeup and sets rather than CGI?

Hmmm...

nice

i like this idea, but the odds of him doing this next is pretty slim considering the bazilion articles about what he's doing next and the large gaps between films, along with the fact he said he wants to be retired from filmmaking by his mid 50's so means he has about 2-3 more movies before then, hopefully not one of those involves killbill, bill is dead just drop it, i dont care about any of those characters.

Well, that's two words and a letter. Still, you get the drift.

Yeah,

I'd like to see less intense genre play and more semi-realistic crime, like pretty much everything he did in the 90's. I'm tired of the movies Jules and Vincent might go to the movies to see, personnaly.

And with the Western that just happened to take place in the East - clever as that sounds, Bill balances between East and West pretty solidly. You could derive it more or less from either end, depending which you were more familiar with.

Tarantino could make a movie about grass growing interesting. Anything the guys writes or directs is usually pretty innovative. If only all directors were visionaries like him.

watch out! out of control ego on the run!

he needs to talk to John Mayer about white guys taking on subjectively sensitive subjects just to please their own egos. he got a free pass with Hitler because that's kind of what everyone wants to see happen. even if it was still self-gratifying. but slavery - good luck old boy.

he can't do sci-fi. too foreign a concept for him to think about the future.

QT should stick to what he knows best and continue to rip off foreign language films. Funny, many of you still are not aware that even the famous Kill Bill was a minor rip off a old Japanese movie. But as long as QT makes them better than the originals, than what the hell.
