Taron Egerton on the political tone of Kingsman 2, plus possible third film

Kingsman: The Golden Circle Taron Egerton Colin Firth

I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE; the trailers certainly did a decent job of pumping up the entertainment factor of the film, but I definitely didn't anticipate that I would enjoy it as much as I did. The upcoming sequel, again helmed by Matthew Vaughn, has some big shoes to fill, but I'm hopeful that KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE will be able to live up to its predecessor. THE GOLDEN CIRCLE once again stars Taron Egerton as Gary "Eggsy" Unwin, and Egerton recently spoke with Den of Geek to tease the upcoming sequel, which he says will be quite political.

I think it very much is political. I think I can say there’s a 'presidential' thread that runs through the new film. I think that, each time, whenever there’s a new global threat that arises in the world of Kingsman, it will be something that may have genuine relevance. In the first one, I guess we could say it’s over population, and in this one, it’s a similarly pertinent global theme. But I think you’re right. It’s a warped, distorted presentation of politics, but I think the themes are definitely there

20th Century Fox was quick to get the ball rolling on a sequel following the release of KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE, and there's hope that a third installment will be in the cards as well. However, Taron Egerton says that Matthew Vaughn is concentrating purely on THE GOLDEN CIRCLE for now.

Matthew is a very much 'Don’t count the chickens before they’ve hatched' kind of guy, but he also has a real sense of Kingsman being his baby and he won’t jeopardise it with a crap idea. So it depends what occurs, and whether it feels right to him, but I don’t think for a second that either he or myself, the lovely people at Fox and whoever else is interested in Kingsman, wouldn’t completely love it if this is a continuing series.

KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE will see Eggsy (Taron Egerton), Merlin (Mark Strong) and Roxy (Sophie Cookson) traveling to the United States to join forces with the Statesman, their U.S. counterpart, in order to stop Poppy (Julianne Moore), an evil American mastermind. The sequel also stars Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, Jeff Bridges, Halle Berry, Vinnie Jones, Elton John, Edward Holcroft, Samantha Womack and, somehow, Colin Firth.

KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE is set for an October 6, 2017 release.
