Teaser trailer for Thor: The Dark World brings some epic, gritty awesomeness

Apr. 23, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Ever since Alan Taylor took on the gig of directing THOR: THE DARK WORLD, my interest piqued. Having done such an amazing job on HBO's Game of Thrones, I knew that Taylor would bring a more gritty, organic, and epic feel to the series, which would be needed to carry the God of Thunder through a more otherworldly journey. And man, is it nice to see the payoff in this teaser trailer for the film! I really didn't think that I would muster as much excitement for this as I had for IRON MAN 3, but this has quickly moved into the top spot for the fall movie season. I'm certain that had original director Kenneth Branagh done the sequel it would be a fine film, but it looks like Taylor's involvement has created a more edgy, Game-of-Thrones-on-steroids feel and I absolutely love it.

Hammer Down:

I'm sure some folks will be a little leery of Thor's return to the theater, but after two iterations on film (THOR and THE AVENGERS), I think that Hemsworth has embodied the role perfectly and having most of the key players back from the original only sweetens the deal. The complaints of spending too much time on Earth in the first film seem to have been heeded for this go round, which should make for a more "comic book" feel. Thank the Gods!

Here's the synopsis:

Marvel's "Thor: The Dark World" continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel's "Thor" and "Marvel's The Avengers," Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos...but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD, starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Christopher Eccleston, Ray Stevenson, Idris Elba, Jamie Alexander, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Zachary Levi, Kat Dennings, Rene Russo, Chris O'Dowd returns to the Nine Realms on November 8, 2013.

Screencaps below!

Extra Tidbit: Well, what do you guys think? Has this made you more or less excited for the film?

Nice

Great improvement from the first movie, as any sequel should be! Honestly, no trailer is going to come close to matching Man of Steel :).

Honestly..That teaser was beyond fucking awesome...

..and I (like so many other schmoes here) can't wait for more of Marvel's Phase 2. One thing though...while I have no doubt that Thor 2 will kick all kinds of ass...I just find it a little disconcerting that every bit of news about this sequel *HAS* to always include copious references to Taylor's work on "Game Of Thrones" (awesome show, that it is)...as if it's *that* show this movie is trying to emulate.

I may just be a nitpicking fanboy irked @ something that's prob not there to be

Wow, I got goosebumps! Aside from this, that shot of Tom Hiddleston with his long hair and semi-frown face - he would make a good rock star Eric Draven for The Crow.

Awsooooo ooooooooooooooome! I'm 37 years old next week ...I feel like a fucking 7 year old again. Marvel looks like they're really upping it in phase two. Phase one movies ...even Avengers ...were all super from a comic book fan point of view ...but honestly ...they were just enjoyable movies ...not great great. Iron Man 3 and now this ...they look like the kind of movies that belong in my best of the best collection (tis would apply to Man Of Steel too). Please God...don't let me down

Heroes Unmade ...

I like that Hemsworth is growing into Thor, or he is getting more Norse as he ages. I like that we finally get to see the characters our of Battle Armor. All that really does not even matter, because Loki just devours screen presence. Dammit gonna watch it a fourth. PS - Glad Kat Dennings stays on earth.

Can they kill Jane?!

Not that I want them to but it looks like it could happen in this movie. Who would be the next love interest if that happens?

Definitely more excited & it seems these Phase 2 films will be much darker, Marvel seriously does know what they are doing as every movie seems to get better & after the way The Avengers performed, it definitely had to end up that way.

Love the idea of him taking Jane to Asgard. I wonder if they'll pursue the love triangle angle between Thor, Jane and Sif. Getting Star Trek Into Darkness vibes from the opening attack scene. Seems like Alan Taylor was an awesome choice to replace Kenneth Branagh after all. And I agree with Netforce that The Hiddles is looking rather Eric Draven-esque!

I'm okay with Natalie Portman's character possibly dying (the teaser implies something like that). Her relationship with Thor was the weakest link in the first movie. I really wanted him to hook up with Jamie Alexander's character.

Is it just me or does Thor seem a little weak in this movie? I mean, I'm sure they're not blowing their load on the first teaser, but he was kicking almost as much ass as Hulk in the Avengers. I wanna see some god-like powers here!

Great Odin's Beard!

This looks so good! Alan Taylor brought that Game of Thrones vibe by filming on location and using set pieces which really looks like its going to be perfect for the world of Thor. Picking Alan Taylor to direct this is one of Marvel's best decisions. I seriously cannot wait to watch this.

Wow, this looks great.

That teaser basically reaffirmed why this is my most anticipated Phase Two Marvel movie in only a minute and a half. The visual style is completely reminiscent of Game of Thrones with that dark, wide-framed grit in every sequence that grounds magic and fantasy into a believable reality. It was only a handful of shots but you can see it in how the camera frames the characters, especially on the battlefield and as Thor is walking Jane through Asgard. The teaser aspect was in full effect by sort

It was only a handful of shots but you can see it in how the camera frames the characters, especially on the battlefield and as Thor is walking Jane through Asgard. The teaser aspect was in full effect by sort of just announcing there's a sequel without presenting any of the full storyline.. and of course dropping that massive wink to the audience at the end. Just the thought of Thor and Loki teaming up by wrecking shit on the battlefield gets my geek veins flowing. Anyway, yeah, A+ teaser and I can't wait.

For a brief moment I thought that "T" thing crashing into Asgard (or wherever they might actually be) was the Enterprise.

Amazing!

This movie looks awesome. I liked the first one but this is going to blow it out of the water. Phase Two seems to be starting out large scale and epic. The success of the Avengers (and the movies leading up to it) definitely shows that Disney is willing to put the money and talent behind these films. Just when you think, "This can't get any better," trailers like this and IM3 come out. I am very excited!
On a side note (and I know it isn't since Fox owns the movie property), for a second

On a side note (and I know it isn't since Fox owns the movie property), for a second there I thought that tower in the last picture was a silhouette of the head of Galactus, ancient enemy and all. Brought back a memory of the cartoon "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes." In the last episode where they are fighting Galactus and Thor shows up after Cap responds to a question of why aren't you worried... "Because I hear thunder"
