Superpowered teens and found footage in the trailer for Chronicle

With the onslaught of low-budget “found footage” movies continuing unabated, it was just a matter of time before superpowers got their chance in the faux documentary spotlight.

And so it is in the trailer for CHRONICLE, in which some reckless teens suddenly find themselves developing remarkable abilities, which they promptly abuse and capture on camera.

Based upon this brief glimpse, it doesn’t really appear to do anything new or clever within the “realistic” superhero genre besides the filmmaking format (it basically looks like a “Heroes”/”Misfits”/”X-Files” mashup done docu style). But the script comes from Max Landis (son of AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON director John Landis) and it’s directed by BIG FAN editor Josh Trank, so perhaps the finished form will have a few surprises.

The movie arrives February 3, 2012.
