Superpowered teens and found footage in the trailer for Chronicle

Oct. 19, 2011by: Dave Davis

With the onslaught of low-budget "found footage" movies continuing unabated, it was just a matter of time before superpowers got their chance in the faux documentary spotlight.

And so it is in the trailer for CHRONICLE, in which some reckless teens suddenly find themselves developing remarkable abilities, which they promptly abuse and capture on camera.

Based upon this brief glimpse, it doesn't really appear to do anything new or clever within the "realistic" superhero genre besides the filmmaking format (it basically looks like a "Heroes"/"Misfits"/"X-Files" mashup done docu style). But the script comes from Max Landis (son of AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON director John Landis) and it's directed by BIG FAN editor Josh Trank, so perhaps the finished form will have a few surprises.

The movie arrives February 3, 2012.

MISFITS

is one of the best spins on the superhero genre I've ever seen. If this is anything like that it should be a solid flick. I am a little tired of the found footage stuff but at least this isnt another exorcism piece.

Can't believe I'm saying this, because I've had my fill of found footage flicks, but that actually looks pretty badass. I'm a cynical 30-something, and I'm extremely surprised that the teens in this one didn't annoy the shit out of me. I'll keep this one on my radar for sure.

This seems to be ripping off an episode of X-Files in which a group of teens gain powers after they find a mysterious power source in a forest. One of the teens turns evil and the other ones have to kill him. Mulder and Scully kinda just follow along.

They need to polish their effects though. You can't have you effects looking fake if you want to pull off the found footage bit.

Looks solid, but I'm pretty tired of "found footage" films. I liked them when they were fresh and used for effect, now it's just become a cheap way to produce a film. I think that if this were an actual cinematic effort, it would work. I dig the script from what I heard and the characters seem very legitimate. Unfortunately, towards the end of the trailer, it looks like this film could go south.

Bring it on!

I'm really digging on this movie! It's about time someone went and applied this film making style to something like this. I'm excited!

Looks good and I'm glad to see one of the Wire season 4 kids all grown up and transitioning into the mainstream. I'll see it for him alone, but even so it looks like a cool spin on the superpowers concept.
