TMNT co-creator says Jonathan Liebesman's upcoming reboot is the best Turtles movie yet

Though many a fanboy freaked the f*ck out when the 'Mutant' portion of 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' got, um, mutated into something to do with aliens, the word coming out of Comic-Con and TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman should help assure fans that the impending NINJA TURTLES reboot from director Jonathan Liebesman (WRATH OF THE TITANS) and Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes may actually turn out to be pretty good.

In an interview with MTV, Eastman proclaimed: "From what I've seen, it's easily the best Turtle movie yet. We're talking Raid: Redemption-style fight scenes; we're talking about epic Rise of the Planet of the Apes sort of effects." Wow, name-dropping THE RAID (a film that if you haven't seen you should do so immediately)? Them's bold words!

Eastman continued: "I know that Michael and his group really like [the changes] and that Paramount was supportive of that, so I think that it's great. I grew up reading Captain America and The Avengers and all that stuff, and over the course of the comic book history, since Avengers has been around, how many times has it been reinvented, reformatted, restructured, replatformed?"

So there you have it, right from the creator's mouth. What say you?

NINJA TURTLES is currently scheduled for release on May 16, 2014.

I'm still on the ropes, but.....

It's not the same as retconning, because they've literally changed the identity of the characters by making them aliens, so now they're just called Ninja Turtles. It would be like changing Captain America into Captain Czech Republic.

SHREDDER!

Is the SHREDDER going to be in it? If he is not then I do not care about this film. It will just be another turtles movie. I want the glory days back when the SHREDDER rained supreme and the turtles had a real challenge in front of them. A challenge that would even have the brothers splitting up sometimes because the stress shredder brought on.

On the one hand, I kind of want to scream and rip my hair out at this prospect. But when I really, truly think about it, that reaction is mostly because Michael Bay is involved. Let's be honest, if David Fincher wanted to do a "new take" on TMNT that involved them being extra-terrestrials, we'd be pissing our pants out of excitement. Sure, there might be some trepidation, but it's David Fincher, so we'd be down. Bay is not a great filmmaker, and hasn't earned any trust (at least from me). That said, I'm a longtime Turtles fan and, worried as this might have me, I'll give it a chance. Also, for the record, although they didn't make the turtles aliens, how DRASTICALLY different are all the incarnations of the turtles so far? From the dark, Daredevil-inspired comic, to the goofy, slapstick cartoon, to the strange, body-suit movies, to the new cartoon, which blended the humor with the edge, to the underappreciated animated film not too long ago? All radically different from one another, but I don't remember nearly the same outcry. Which isn't to say I don't understand where everyone's coming from, I'm just saying let's chill and see what happens. And if he fucks it up, let's go pee on Michael Bay's house.

Fight Scenes make not a Great Movie

I've seen half of the raid and liked it for what it was but this is the Turtles..Michael Bay needs to get over his alien obsession cause i'm so frickin over it...the turtles were mutated from ooze...get it right....Oh and no Shredder= crap.

Sorry, No Dice!

I don't care what someone says, about what they saw, or what they read even if they are the "co-creator". Akira Toriyama the creator of the entire Dragonball universe also wrote Dragonball Evolution. Breaks my heart to say this, i think it was the worst film in the history of film. And i was told prior too, that it was going to be amazing, we did such an incredible job bringing this to the big screen, and on and on... LIES! ALL LIESS! ALL THE TIME!!

Don't tell me you hate the action in The Rock!?
Don't say you hate Transformers cuz of the cast or storyline, it's fuckin' Robots fighting Robots..!
Don't tell me you hate the special effects in Armaggedon!?
People nit-pick on stupid shit... So what if the origin of TMNT is altered, are you gonna go jump off a bridge now?

Alan Moore isn't a filmmaker, he's a graphic novel writer. Ask him which graphic novel is the best he's ever written and I bet the answer would be, "The one I have coming out next week."

I will give it a chance, but really how many more chances do we give Bay and his company? He has already had enough chances! Also, you havent read the script either, and the trail of bad movies is the only evidence we have to go by. Not to mention the disrespected used when Bay and his boys reinvent other material. Anywho, despite all that, i will still see the film. Even though the CURRENT TMNT COMIC (on issue 11) is already reinventing the characters in a good way.

Thats not even remotely the point, everyone who is upset has formed some sort of attachment to this franchise. "Fanboys" or Fans for TMNT in general just want their beloved characters, to be done right. And theres not a lot of faith put in Bay, after his debacle that is Transformers. Then his first statement about this film before it even starts filming is that hey everyone guess what!!! I'm putting my own spin to this, cause i have a huge alien fetish.

If he was Smart, and if anyone disagrees feel free to chime in:
They should set up the aliens in the first film, with the Origin of the ooze being alien (as in the comics), and deployed to earth. Have a great story with splinter teaching the Turtles ninjitsu, Have them fight some Villain, any would suffice, doesn't even have to be anyone of magnitude. Then set up aliens coming to earth for the second film touching on the more philosophical "where do we come from", and have your aliens come into play, EVERYONE's HAPPY! no?

Not sure if anyone on here is reading the current TMNT - its terrific - one of the best comics i am collecting. That book does a good update of the turtles, while still retaining the basic elements of the story. To the point of Captain America and the Avengers being reinvented etc - yeah but Cap wasnt reinvented as an alien. PD's is just a whatever company, they have made films that range from crap - to passable. Taking on TMNT could lead to their biggest disappointment yet!

I still don't like the changes. One of the best aspects of the entire turtles history has been their origin. The fact that they were born from the ooze and that they were all brothers raised by the father who found them. These things lead into what makes the turtles story so great. Take away that origin, and you take away the depth that was created in something as silly as a story about mutated turtles who wear masks and fight using ninjutsu. Now, it could turn out to have as much depth and be a good movie, but even with Eastman's blessing (something that I would be surprised to hear him say anything bad about, considering the amount of money he must be getting from this project), Bay is involved, and the last movie he did that had any real depth was The Island, and even that barely tapped anything deep. Fight scenes are great and all, but in the TMNT universe, they're nothing without the deep relationships and family atmosphere between the turtles and Splinter (not to mention April and Casey).

The thing is.

It's Platinum Dunes. So regardless of intent, it's going to be shit.

I'm up for a nose-smashing, genuine martial art ninja turtles flick.....if it were ANY other production company on Earth then I might even be excited. But simply....fuck Platinum Dunes.
