Terminator 5 picks up steam as new screenwriters are hired

Jan. 17, 2013by:

Alright everybody, I have good news and I have bad news. The good news is THE TERMINATOR franchise is looking more and more likely to get a fifth entry that involves Arnold Schwarzenegger. The bad news is the screenwriters have been hired and they aren't exactly superstars. Well, one of them is.

Deadline is reporting that Laeta Kalogridis And Patrick Lussier will be writing the script for TERMINATOR 5. Kalogridis is the more accoomplished writer of the two having written AVATAR, SHUTTER ISLAND, and ALEXANDER. Lussier wrote the screenplay for DRACULA 2000 and MY BLOODY VALENTINE. Nothing says this pair cannot knock out a badass TERMINATOR screenplay, but the odds don't look good.

But, if you think about it, Kalogridis has a connection with James Cameron. Maybe that will be a good in to try and have the man who invented THE TERMINATOR franchise give his blessing to a new movie. Either way, Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures is looking more and more solid with every move they make.

What do you think of this TERMINATOR news?

Can go both ways.

Im a big Terminator fan and would like to see more if done right.
Salvation was decent but lacked the terminator-vibe. Cameron created a awesome look for the futuristic war and they totally went with a different look in Salvation. Which is what i dont like about the movie. Nothing wrong with the cast. Either way, im glad Arnold will be in this!

credits

lets step back a sec. i cant get past these writing credits. Avatar is known for its visuals, Shutter Island for its acting and Alexander for...well...for sucking. and this is the more accomplished writer...
this series has gone about as far as it can without a total reboot/fresh start. i love the first 2 movies and have run to the theatre for all 4, but it may be time to put this old dog down and get a new puppy.

Make him HUMAN!!!!

As long as Arnie is the human that the machines prototype their terminator look on I'm all for this. Age wont be a factor then and it would create an interesting new story arc.

Just give me a movie about the futuristic battles shown in terminator 1 and 2. T4 was trying to be more transformers than terminator, and it's the weakest of the 4 films. I like Arnold, but I don't need him to come back. The story needs to focus on John Conner b/c he's been the key in all the films. I have an outline of how you could make a couple decent terminator sequels, keep with the continuity of the 4 films, and still give the series a good ending. I hope this team does the same.

I'm not the biggest fan of The Terminator series, but seeing Arnold back on screen with that famous score would be amazing.

did Kalogridis have a big part in directing avatar and shutter island, or was his part minimal? Anyways, a guy who wrote those two great films is ok in my book. Cool to hear that Kalogridis has a connection with Cameron. Yea I REALLY hope this gets made soon as Arnie isn't getting any younger, and I hope he hits the gym HARD and gets a personal trainer for this one!! Cool is they figured out how to bring back Michael Biehn, Edward Furlong, and Linda Hamilton.

I actually have faith in Megan Elison.

She's been behind some great films recently and invested in stuff that is outside the mainstream spectrum (Zero Dark, The Master, etc.). With her interest in reviving The Terminator, I feel as though they'll at least try to give it a good shot. The only thing is, how will they get around Arnold's age? Suspension of disbelief was possibly with T3 because he had the physical build, but nowadays he's looking more like Clint Eastwood and just won't be able to reach peak physical conditioning again.

I also hope they manage to bring back Christian Bale (though I really doubt it will happen) because despite T4 being a mixed bag, I did like him in it.

This franchise is dead. Unless they just completely scrap the whole Conner aspect we' re in one hell of a hole in terms of continuance. The main problem is Cameron's lack of involvement in such an iconic franchise. The first sequel was frankly a proper ending before Hollywood became bankrupt of originality. Each successor has felt forced not natural even in serial terms because each one redefined 'Camerons' original rules on its own terms but never being successful enough to expound in

I'd love to see an original entry something that's of equal footing to the original two films, but given its been 20+ years since T2 Im afraid its put into deep sleep by Schwarzenegger death grip

I want this, I really do, but will they honestly be making Arnold a terminator again? I can't imagine it any other way, but fuck....fuck . He's old. Hope the script blows my mind.

Arnold better not be a T-800 and it better be a sequel to T4

how would having James Cameron bless this movie have any effect on how well it turns out? what, is he going to perform some religious-like film ceremony and make the movie holy?

I think they mean, if he gives his blessing once reading the script, it may just be that he thinks it's up to par - which is good news for us. I don't think they're talking about some pre-writing blessing that will make them write gold.

Actually saw Terminator 1 just last week and it is still the best one in the series (and yeah, better than T2 imho). The Terminator franchise has gone from horror (T1), to pure action (T2), to action comedy (T3), to a combination of the before (T4) and just not very good.

I agree the first is the best. I thought T4 was awful.
