Terrence Malick gets Christian Bale for his next flick

Feb. 3, 2010by: Mike Sampson

Terrence Malick doesn't make very many films. In fact, in a directing career that dates back to 1969, he has only released five movies (the sixth, TREE OF LIFE, is supposedly coming some time this year). So when Malick does decide to step behind the camera for one of his films, he usually assembles a pretty impressive cast. That will definitely be the case this fall when he directs an untitled love story starring Christian Bale, Rachel McAdams, Javier Bardem and Olga Kurylenko.

Pretty much nothing is known about the film at this point other than it will begin shooting this fall and that it's a love story. Who's the love between? Whatever it is, I'm sure it'll be worth seeing. We've been waiting patiently for TREE OF LIFE since it began filming in early 2008 and while it has been rumored to be premiering at the Cannes Film Festival this year, one can never be sure.

Christian Bale recently wrapped filming on THE FIGHTER with Mark Wahlberg and Amy Adams and doesn't have any firm projects set between now and when Malick's project would begin. Same goes for McAdams who will see MORNING GLORY hit theaters this year but hasn't a project on her schedule to follow that up with.

Extra Tidbit: I was thoroughly let down by THE NEW WORLD but maybe I need to revisit...

No need to revisit THE NEW WORLD. It was horrible.

Isn't Tree of Life the 5th Malick feature? (Badlands, Days of Heaven, Thin Red Line, and New World)... Either way, I'll check it out. Although, The New World was my least favourite of his flicks.

Sounds great. I love Malick...The New World was incredibly underrated. Bale, Bardem and Malick? Count me in.

Nice!

Great to see Bale back with Malick again.

By the way, "The Thin Red Line" is one awesome film. If they would only release the original cut...

The New World is fantastic!

It's great to see others approve of The New World as well. It was an intricate and mesmerizing retelling of the Pocahontas story the way John Smith originally told it after returning home for the "new world" itself. Now, granted, John Smith's story may have had some inaccuracies (he was not always known for telling the truth), but the film itself is superb.

I'm really looking forward to this--it's great to here Malick has another movie lined up after Tree of Life. I HATE waiting almost a

I completely agree.

I didn't fully appreciate THE NEW WORLD the first time I saw it, but after watching it for a film class (and having to write an analysis of it), it's really quite excellent and filled with themes and meaning.

Definitely a film worth watching more than once.

YES!!!! Malick is my favorite director. His films are so beautiful and moving and the cinematography and score in his films are the best ever.

I found "The New World" to be an unusual, but appropriate film, and applauded it for taking a [link] look at the English settlers, and for getting the Pocahontas story right.

Don't Bother....

If this is like the last Mallick film that I tried to stomach, "The Thin Red Line", then I'll pass. A fiasco of a movie. No thanks.

I loved the new world, but I can understand why not everyone would be into it. Although nothing is revealed about the plot of this new movie, I'm already interested.

Tree of Life would actually be his 5th film.

I look forward to it, he's a superb filmmaker and that's a great cast.
