Terry O'Quinn is not up for Lex Luthor, plus details on the villain's role in Batman vs Superman and more!

11.14.2013

Oh look, another BATMAN VS SUPERMAN rumor! Sigh. As it has been for most BATMAN VS SUPERMAN news recently, take this following information with a grain (or mountain) of salt.

A couple of days ago a site claimed Terry O'Quinn was on a shortlist for Lex Luthor in BATMAN VS SUPERMAN. Now CBM has learned from a source that O'Quinn was never up for the part. The source says James Purefoy (JOHN CARTER, Fox's The Following) was approached for the role, but he wasn't interested.

CBM's source has also told them about Lex Luthor's role in the film:

Zack Snyder's Lex Luthor isn't gonna be focusing on real estate, like he has in past Superman films. This time, Lex's motivations will be rooted on his belief that Superman is not good for mankind. The Lex that you will see, will resemble characteristics from Grant Morrison's All-Star Superman.

The site's source further describes Lex Luthor as "the pride of Metropolis. The people love him, he's been helping out a lot. Even Lois thinks he's a good guy initially. He is a very smart man and has a lot of charisma." Lex Luthor will also apparently play with "fringe science" in Zack Snyder's film, according to the source. I have no way of knowing if the scene CBM describes in this next part actually appears in BATMAN VS SUPERMAN, but just in case it does, here's a spoiler warning for all of you.

In one particular scene, Lex will ask his LexCorp scientists if they can recreate Kryptonian armor. Lex says to them, "When the world realizes what he truly is, they will need someone to stand up to him." When one of scientists ask if he is that someone, Lex replies, "Is there any other person who can?"

If Luthor is working on replicating Kryptonian armor, could it be for the green mech suit he has worn in the comics for battling Superman? Fingers crossed.

The source goes on to say Wonder Woman and The Flash will both appear in BATMAN VS SUPERMAN, but it will be as Diana and Barry Allen, and neither of them will be wearing their costumes in the film. CW is working on a Flash series that's a spinoff from Arrow, and according to CBM's source, Warner Bros. wants Grant Gustin to cameo in BATMAN VS SUPERMAN, but they want to see how fans react to him as the character first. If fans don't care for Gustin as Barry Allen, the source says Warner Bros. will find someone else for the cameo.

One last rumor for you on BATMAN VS SUPERMAN. Bruce Wayne will have a love interest in the film, and Ben Affleck will apparently be reading with several actresses this week for the part. CBM's source says Warner Bros. is looking for an African-American actress for the part, and the character won't be just another one night stand for Bruce Wayne. In fact, the source says she will know all about his secret identity in the upcoming film.

Interesting stuff, but like I said, these are rumors, so don't get too excited (or disappointed) with this news.

BATMAN VS SUPERMAN is scheduled to be released on July 17th, 2015.

Wow, that Lex dialog is awful. I'm going to call bullshit on even the possibility of that being real. I think Goyer is a hack, but even he would know better than that.

Daniel Day Lewis

Going with picking the best actors (just like MOS and the Dark Knight trilogy) for the roles, I would say Daniel Day Lewis for Lex Luthor. Lex needs to be a somewhat like Bruce Wayne.... a good looking rich guy that's very smart. He needs to be the bad guy pretending to be the good guy. So far every actor rumored for Luthor is a decent to good actor but they're not Lex Luthor. They're not 'pretty boyish' enough. They need to open a HUGE bag of money and try to get Daniel Day Lewis for the

I want Kerry Washington.

Oh and she can also be Batman's love interest. I'm not jealous. It's only a movie after all.

As far as Lex Luthor casting goes, you could do a LOT worse than Michael C Hall.

Just saying.

Sounds like a fanboyís wet dream Ė so itís probably BS. That said, I do like this BS very much - from the Lex plan to the Flash introduction (especially if WB's are looking to get well in to their DC cinematic universe as quickly as possible...but still want to do it well). I donít know who Gustin is so Iíll have to wait and see how he does as the Flash but I do trust the people behind Arrow so have very high hopes. Season 2 is a blast and I canít wait a week for each subsequent episode. I

I know Flash is a tier 1 character and DC fans will have an issue with him being introduced via a tier 2 characterís show but the people behind Arrow have not put a foot wrong thus far (the "mind your surroundings" reference in a recent Arrow episode bought a massive grin to my face). Whilst I do not for a second think Arrow will ever show up in a Justice League movie, I would be all for this show to be bought in and referenced during any part of DCís cinematic universe. If Gustin is that link between Arrow and the rest of the DC cinematic universe, I'm all for it. Unlike others on here, Iím neither an expert of the DC world or at judging how good someone will be at playing a given character Ė but if it was all to come off well, why not?

I have a friend who works on the film and they said after that crucial Lex scene where he says, "is there any other person who can?" The rest of his staff individually say, well I was thinking about the flash. No one has even touched him, then the other one says no I was thinking about Wonder Woman, she's basically a God, and the next one goes well I was thinking Green Lantern. I mean, this is his planet to cover. I'm surprised he hasn't noticed anything since the destruction of metropolis.

I mean, this is his planet to cover. I'm surprised he hasn't noticed anything since the destruction of metropolis. But I mean, clearly he's an alien threat that GL is suppose to be on top of. And if he can't handle it, he can get the rest of the lanterns to come down and help like they did with paralax... Wait...they didn't all come help? And the last guy goes I was thinking that guy who dresses like a bat over in Gotham. Then everyone stops and looks at that guy and says, what the fuck could he do? He's 50. He's a human. He can't even keep his majority human criminals in prison. Superman will break his neck like Zod's, and the rest of the bones as well. And he goes, well, he does have a partner! And everyone collectively says "...Zod was our only shot."

Oh and in a recent comic, new 52 I'm pretty sure where everyone gets blown to banes size and there's a little boney girl, and he was dating a black girl and she was totally using him, so is this her? Regardless...when will she be killed or become a traitor?

Prometheus suit

The first thing I thought of when I saw the Kryptonian armor was "Splash some green and purple on that it it will look just like Lex Luthor's armor in the comics." My next point is Man of Steel spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen it.

***SPOILERS BELOW ***

In the end fight when Zod shrugs off the armor my first thought then was I bet Luthor will find it and have a team rebuild it for him to wear. If that is the case then at least it will explain the "no helmet" thing about the armor in

That Flash rumor is such bullshit. There is no way they would cast Grant Gustin as the big feature Flash in a film like this. For television sure; for this no way in hell. And why would they cross the television show with the actual big film that the character is going to appear in? And if they were to do that, than they would have to include Arrow's world into the film as well and cast Stephen Amell as Green Arrow. The whole thing just makes no sense. And for Flash, I want DC to actually cast

And since Quinn is out for Lex Luthor, than my suggestion is for Jon Hamm. He would be an awesome and intimidating Luthor. And if you have seen Mad Men, than you know Hamm can play charismatic and dark very easily.

Come on DC! Cast Jon Hamm as Luthor, Jaime Alexander as Wonder Woman, Charlie Hunnam as Green Arrow, Bradley Cooper as The Flash, and being back Reynold and Strong for Green Lantern and Sinestro.

Totally agree about Amell. He's done great things with the character and deserves to get the nod as the official Green Arrow in DC movie universe.

The only thing that sucks is DC is painting themselves into a corner by establishing The Flash in the same universe as Amell's Arrow. Gustin is a bad choice for the character, and frankly the TV show is a bad idea too. Flash deserves the big screen treatment with solid talent in the role. I like your suggestion of Bradley Cooper for the role,

Not that I'm in any way opposed to interracial romance, but...

...I hate when they put out these casting calls for specific races. Like, if Affleck is reading with multiple actresses to see which one he has the most chemistry with, shouldn't it be centered SOLELY on his chemistry with the actress as the #1 factor, rather than dismissing a whole host of possible actresses simply because they aren't African-American? And I think this would be common sense to the people involved with the production, which is why this whole thing reeks of BS to me. I mean,

How does some "insider" know specific quotes of dialogue from the screenplay already?

That casting rumor makes it sound like they are casting Jezebel Jet, who was only with him as a set up and tried to kill him. I highly doubt they are going that way.

Given that logic, why do they put out casting calls for male or female? Why do they need to include the size and shape of a person's body? Or age for that matter?

The story they have/are crafting requires Batman/Bruce Wayne to have a love-interest of a different ethnicity. We don't know enough of the details about this movie to say with any certainty that the race of characters is NOT important.

I personally believe this "love interest" is going to be Talia Al Ghul. As for the Al Ghul

I personally believe this "love interest" is going to be Talia Al Ghul. As for the Al Ghul family, they might be going with a specific ethnicity in mind and need this character to reflect that. The reason behind my guess is that I think with the Batman solo movies they'll be heading in the direction of introducing Damian as Robin and the whole Bat-Family on screen.

David Goyer said they were "A lot farther along than people think" which implies that there is an existing draft of the script already.

I'm hoping for a Lex Luthor who is maybe not the Big Bad of the movie, but is still doing everything in his power to make life hell for Superman. If played right, Luthor could signal a coming storm for Superman, instead of an imminent threat right off the bat (no pun intended).

But I will say, at the end of Man of Steel, I wasn't all that convinced Superman was good for mankind, either.

That approach to Lex sounds like he will work. An affably evil character who was "Metropolis' Favourite Son" until Superman came around, someone's who's jealous of the adoration Superman receives but who also genuinely believes he, and not Superman, deserves said adoration. I really like Kevin Spacey's take on Luthor but I guess he was a mite too theatrical and didn't come off as someone who could actually run Metropolis and perhaps run the country.

I found Kevin Spacey's take was too similar to Gene Hackman's hammy performance in the 1970's films. I'd like to see a Lex Luthor who is more dangerous and calculating, someone who initially appears sympathetic but shows his true colours later on. Someone who could convince the world that he does have its best interests at heart.

Another Luthor Source

It sounds like they're also pulling from Luthor by Brian Azzarello. That's a great insight into Lex Luthor. It does a good job of showing how much Metropolis loves him, but also how he messes with the "fringe science" as stated above. I highly recommend this one.
