Movie Jail: This week's defendant is...Adam Sandler!

Jul. 3, 2012by:

Welcome to Movie Jail, a facility like any other, only its inmates are Hollywood writers, directors, actors and producers. This column will serve as a Movie Jail trial. We will put one defendant on trial; lay out arguments for the Prosecution and Defense. And we leave it up to YOU, the reader, to decide whether the defendant is guilty of his or her crime. What crime? The crime of consistently being a shithouse.

The Defendant

Adam Sandler

The Case

The Prosecution: Click, Spanglish, Eight Crazy Nights, Bedtime Stories, The Longest Yard, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, Just Go With It, Jack & Jill.*

When is enough, enough? Though Sandlers movies consistently gross over $50M a picture (exceptions are some of his dramatic turns in Reign Over Me, Punch Drunk Love and Spanglish), and close to half grossing over $100M worldwide, the quality of this output is just as consistent.in awfulness. His highest critically rated movies on Rotten Tomatoes are Punch Drunk Love, Funny People, Stupidity and The Wedding Singer. While most are officially rotten on the site, the same holds true for the audience rating. And though the court retains the fact that the movies are financially successful, the court fails to receive any evidence that anyone likes these pieces of shitballs.....of shit.

The Defense: Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy, Punch Drunk Love amongst others, comedy CDs Theyre All Gonna Laugh At You and What the Hell Happened to Me as well as his skits on Saturday Night Live and cameos in a handful of other movies like Dirty Work and Coneheads*

*The court recognizes that all movies are subjective, so relax.

Sandler showed up big in his first couple headlining gigs with Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore, widely considered to be his funniest roles and classics for a generation. He parlayed that success into other successful comedies including The Waterboy, The Wedding Singer and Big Daddy. Some proved to be more financially successful than others, but the fact is that Sandler made the mid and late 90s his bitch, and made Happy Madison Productions a money making factory.

IN CLOSING...

So, whats to be done with Mr. Sandler? Could his earlier successful movies give a pass to the more recent, water downed version of the man? Does his box office appeal have any bearing in this case? And the most important question to be asked, once all evidence is taken into consideration, I ask you The Jury, is Adam Sandler GUILTY or NOT GUILTY? Lets hear YOUR arguments, either side, by STRIKING BACK BELOW.

"Baby talk baby talk....yell....laugh.....SHUT UP!

Extra Tidbit: The verdict and sentence for this week's Movie Jail trial will be announced in the next column, along with our most recent defendant. Who else deserves their ass thrown in Movie Jail? Strike back below and we might throw his/her ass on trial!

Guilty...

He's the Rob Liefeld of Movies. Shrugs off the criticisms and exploits his fan base for a buck. Its not that his movies are still childish, etc... I'm for it, "stupid comedy" has its place. The problem is that his movies actually got really really bad... I'll say since Zohan (that was the limit).

While his role in Funny People made it seem as if he had realized some of his poor film choices as of late, continuing with the production of Grown Ups 2 and That's My Boy clearly show that he has not learned his lesson.

I've defended him for so long. I didn't think Spanglish (which he was individually very good in) Chuck and Larry and Longest Yard are so terrible that he needed to be hung out to dry, nor Grown-Ups, which I didn't particularly care for but my parents and quite a few older adults I know seemed to really like it). But this is when they are paired with his good stuff like Funny People and Happy Gilmore. Now that he has weighed down his most recent CV with Just Go With It, Jack and Jill, and now

Now that he has weighed down his most recent CV with Just Go With It, Jack and Jill, and now That's my Boy, all his near-misses seem way worse. If he got back to making great stuff I would probably not fault him for the near-misses, but at this point GUILTY AS ALL HELL.

I'd say Guilty as well. Regardless of quality movies like Happy Gilmore, Punch Drunk Love, Reign Over Me, his crappy movies as of late (especially Jack And Jill) really put the final nail into this case. Extra tidbit: Cuba Gooding, Jr. I hope he keeps his Oscar in a safe because the Oscar committee might want it back, hehe.

Admittedly I haven't seen many of the recent ones but I love Billy Madison. We can ignore heinous crimes as long as the defendant did one good deed right?

Guilty as chargecd

I think the crucial thing was the fact that his better movies were his earlier ones. Basically, his schtick has aged really badly.

Further evidence for the prosecution: Happy Madison Productions also brought us Rob Schneider crapfests like The Animal, Deuce Bigalow and The Hot Chick. HG also gave us David Spade in Joe Dirt and Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star.

While he does have some good movies under his belt, unfortunately he has far more god-awful ones. In the last few years he has seemed to even stop trying all that hard, and just be on auto-pilot. That is unforgivable.

His last films were god-awful. And it looks like with Grown Ups 2 on the way, we can expect more of the same. I thought we were onto something with his "real" performance in Funny People.

Your honour, the defendant was never that funny. Yes, he might have made me laugh on some occasions but I believe that he simply had help from good material. Even in his best comedies, he was never the strength of the movie, it were either funny and foul-mouth lines that were delivered by other actors or great performances like John Turturro or Carl Weathers.

Even though his movies as of late have been very lackluster I am still an Adam Sandler fan, and to me his last decent movie was Longest Yard. Thankfully we will always have his classics like Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, The Wedding Singer & The Waterboy. Those are movies I never get tired of watching.

If he's being judged by a jury of his peers he would be not guilty, considering his films still make money at the box office. Believe it or not there are other people besides internet neckbeards who go to the movies. Ever since half in the bag whined about Jack & Jill everyone seems to be hopping on the bandwagon. Get over it, it's getting old.

Obviously, but the coverage has been consistent lately on this site and others. I find it interesting nobody just ignores his films, recognizing that he still appeals to a particular demographic, (much in the way with Tyler Perry films.) Yet, I never see anyone raging hard on Tyler Perry, (again, on this site and others), even though he is a one-trick pony as well. It's as if it's "okay" for him to have a culture of people that flock to his films, but not Adam Sandler.

His recent movies are nothing more then a pathetic attempt to stay relevant to an audience who were in grade school when Happy Gilmore came out. It's getting painful to watch.

If this was prior to seeing That's My Boy I would say yes. Fortunately (or UN- depending on which side you're on) I did see it and it gave me hope. So for now he gets a stay of conviction. However, I believe his next movie will seal his fate.

Guilty. His last few goods have been disappointing, and he doesn't seem to want to change. I'd like to see him take some risks with his roles; work on a film with Woody Allen or Wes Anderson instead of his usual gang telling the same tired jokes.
As for next week, how about M. Night. Another guy that started off great and just went downhill ever since.
