Thanos confirmed to appear in both Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers 2

3 years agoby:

Looks like now that Marvel has announced James Gunn is directing GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, we get to know officially that Thanos will be the villain, or at least one of them.

Cosmic Book News learned from Jim Starlin, who created Thanos in the Marvel comic book world, that Thanos would be the main villain in THE AVENGERS 2 and would also appear in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. They also mentioned that his appearance in GUARDIANS may be alongside two other potential villains: Adam Warlock and The Magus. Now, not to make things too complicated but if Adam Warlock and The Magus appear, who knows how many potential superhero movies could be spun-off from that.

In either case, I would bank that Thanos in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY would be mainly to set him up for THE AVENGERS 2, seeing as the release dates line up properly. IRON MAN 3 opens May 3rd, 2013, THOR: THE DARK WORLD on November 8, 2013, CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER opens April 4, 2014, and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is scheduled to open on August 1, 2014. THE AVENGERS 2 would wrap up Phase Two on May 1, 2015.

Extra Tidbit: What the hell is coming for Phase Three????

Kinda expected this, but good news none the less. I wonder if they will get an actor to play him. Or will he be a CGI character like Hulk? I liked Hiddleson as Loki in the first Avengers, and it was because of they way he was developed. Hopefully they do the same with Thanos. The best comic book films are those with a well developed villain.

nice, was expecting this

and hoping my expectations were reasonable, looks like they were! Very much looking forward to how he plays out in these two movies, hope he makes for a great great villain. I do have to say though that the shot of him at the end of Avengers was really corny I though (not Magneto's final shot in First Class corny or anything but still). Not only the horrible choice to have him look directly at the audience but just his general design it looked so cheap the whole chin and everything, like

And the bright pink colour... some things need to be changed when certain things are brought from comic book to film, this is definitely one of them... wonder if they'll do any redesigning (I assume they will but who knows)

In other news, the grass is green, the sky is blue and Wolverine has admantium claws. All kidding aside, the idea that Adam Warlock might be involved is great news, my #1 casting pick for him would be Gabriel Mann who plays Nolan Ross on Revenge.

Extra Tidbit: I think the smart thing to do would be to write Avengers 3 as two separate movies, because after The Shield series and A2 come out there is going to be a lot of characters like Doctor Strange, Ant-Man (and hopefully Black Panther and

A while back I posted that I thought Thanos + Red Skull would be in Guardians of the Galaxy. Would only make sense that Red Skull, (who magically was vaporized into space after the bomber fight w/ Cpt. America) would be placed in this Guardians of the Galaxy setting and team up with Thanos and be defeated while Thanos makes his escape after acquiring the Infinity Gauntlet which would then start Phase 2. Super excited to see if this is what is going to happen!

If Thanos is the villain for Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers 2, I can only imagine what Marvel and Whedon have planned for The Avengers 3.

It has to be a given that Mar-Vell will be in this as well then, right?

Civil War

Since it specifically said "appearance " I wouldn't be surprised (but still excited) if Thanos is only seen in the post credits scene in GotG . I'd go apesh*it to see Civil War for Avengers 3! By 2016ish we'd have 8 years of MCU character development, and wouldn't need a villan allowing it enough time to give every member of the (by then, pretty large) Avenger's roster to have ample screen time.

Thanos better clean house with the Guardians. I don't want to see one of them left standing at the end of this movie. Not because I hate the characters or the idea of Marvel making a Guardians movie. But just to show that Thanos is a force to be reckoned with and he doesn't fuck around!

If we are lucky by the time Marvel gets to Phase 3 maybe they'll have gotten the rights back to their other characters owned by other studios.
If so, I'd love to see a "Marvel movie universe" vs Galactus for the last movie of Phase 3.

Aside from my lovely family, hereís another reason why I so donít wanna die between now the end of this second phase! Honestly, as a 9 year old kid in the 80ís reading comics, I knew that the Marvel live action stuff was pretty poor when compared to say the Superman movies (though after 2 that went downhill fast) and when I was a young teen, the Burton batman movies (which also went downhill very fast after Returns). I longed for the day Marvel would give us better. Years on, my now 9 year

Whilst none of the films have been a total knockout for me, Iíve enjoyed them all (Nortonís Hulk Iíve come to love as a result of repeat DVD viewings Ė what can I say, my kid keeps watching it over and over) and cannot imagine a day where I think for even a nanosecond theyíre going overkill on us. On a serious note, I wonder what one flop movie would do to their long-term plans.

Why tie in GotG at all??

Here's what I know about Guardians of the Galaxy: (1) I've never heard of it and (2) it's got a fucking RACCOON for a character. So why oh why would Marvel tie in a lesser-known, stupid looking movie to the success that they've had with every other movie so far? I don't get it.

The racoon was in Marvel vs Capcom and he is one bad ass mofo. Also, he was in the latest Avengers animated show. Just because you never heard of something, I guess that means it sucks and no one else has heard of it either. Go pick up a comic book cause you are obviously no comic book fan.

I'll tell you why they're tying in a bunch of characters you've never heard of.
(1) To show stubborn buffoons like yourself that the Marvel Universe actually has a WIDE variety of characters with huge back stories that can have a very large effect on other characters in the universe.
(2) The Raccoon is fucking awesome if you would take some of your precious time to read it instead of just shitting all over it. Just because the comics aren't as mainstream as Captain America or Wolverine

(3) The Guardians were originally an intergalactic task force much like the Avengers are on Earth. Their job was to capture the mad titan Thanos after he wiped out and enslaved entire worlds. Now because most people don't know these characters, chances are Marvel is bringing in this team movie to show you how much of a bad ass Thanos can be by wiping out the team without killing any of those three precious characters you know of.
Can you dig it?

Like AvidMovieLover said, they do seem to be heading down the Infinity Gauntlet arc with these movies, what with Thanos and Adam Warlock showing up. Shame Silver Surfer and Galactus probably aren't on the cards due to Fox's influence though.

I'm liking what I'm reading here. Thanos and Magus would make one powerhouse duo of villians both of which would take an the avengers easily. Cant wait for phase two to start!!!

My only problem with this is Thanos is too bad ass for The Guardians. We all know Marvel want sequels for gotg so that means Thanos won't be kicking their asses like he would be doing in the comics. I think Galactus will have to make an appearance for Avengers 3, that or the Annihilation story arc. Won't marvel be getting Galactus back since Fox loses the rights because they can't get DareDevil in production? I thought I read that somewhere.

Do it Marvel. I dare ya.....

This may sound crazy but this sounds like it would be great for a beginning to one of the greatest super hero fights of all time, The INFINITY GAUNTLET SAGA. If you thought the avengers was a cluster#$%^ of heroes and bad guys than you aint seen nothing yet.

EXTRA TIDBIT:

Ragnarok in Thor 3. Asgard moving to Earth as in the comics. Then the "Siege" plot where the state becomes the enemy for Avengers 3 and Cap 3, in the midst of the chaos Ultron is activated but it is proven to be a bad idea for all. That, or a Kree invasion .. perhaps .. :)
