Thanos will be a phantom menace in Guardians of the Galaxy

Now that we know that Josh Brolin will be playing Thanos in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, the question becomes just how much of the Mad Titan we will see in this summer’s intergalactic hero movie. Hearing the term “voice” in regards to Brolin’s performance leads us to wonder whether the character will be motion captured or fully CGI in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and THE AVENGERS 3. Vulture has learned some details that may help clarify things.

According to their sources, Thanos will appear throughout GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY in the form of holograms communicating with various characters, similar to how Emperor Palpatine appeared in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. They also claim that the character will appear physically in one major scene alongside Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) and Nebula (Karen Gillan). Some rumors said that a battle sequence in the movie would show Thanos on his flying rocket throne but there does not appear to be any evidence supporting that at this time.

I think with enough characters in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY to introduce to audiences, scaling back Thanos and just hinting at his important role through characters talking about him and fleeting glimpses of him will work wonders. Let the focus remain on the direct foe in Ronan the Accuser and save Thanos for a bigger role at the end and even waiting for THE AVENGERS 3.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY opens in theaters on August 1st.
