Thanos will be a phantom menace in Guardians of the Galaxy

Now that we know that Josh Brolin will be playing Thanos in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, the question becomes just how much of the Mad Titan we will see in this summer's intergalactic hero movie. Hearing the term "voice" in regards to Brolin's performance leads us to wonder whether the character will be motion captured or fully CGI in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and THE AVENGERS 3. Vulture has learned some details that may help clarify things.

According to their sources, Thanos will appear throughout GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY in the form of holograms communicating with various characters, similar to how Emperor Palpatine appeared in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. They also claim that the character will appear physically in one major scene alongside Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) and Nebula (Karen Gillan). Some rumors said that a battle sequence in the movie would show Thanos on his flying rocket throne but there does not appear to be any evidence supporting that at this time.

I think with enough characters in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY to introduce to audiences, scaling back Thanos and just hinting at his important role through characters talking about him and fleeting glimpses of him will work wonders. Let the focus remain on the direct foe in Ronan the Accuser and save Thanos for a bigger role at the end and even waiting for THE AVENGERS 3.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY opens in theaters on August 1st.

We already know Thanos isn't comic book big.

From what we have seen, he doesn't look like the blob he was in the 90s comics, so thats good. He is tall and has broad shoulders. There isn't much normal makeup and practical effects cant do to turn Josh Brolin into what we saw in the teaser above.

Really, I think it will be Josh in a Thanos costume with cg touch ups, like how they make Iron Man come to life. RDJ wears parts of the suit and gets the moving parts cg'd into the shots.

I hope it's more motion captured then CGi. And I hope the physical size of Thanos is as huge as the Hulk. They need to make Thanos as big and as threatening as possible for the ultimate showdown in Avengers 3.

hmmmm

I think Thanks and Apocalypse should be both mocap and full cg. These characters are HUGE. No suits please. They knew in The Two Towers that mocap gave Andy Serkis a better performance, but they're things that gollum could do that Andy couldn't.

The only issue with that is that Josh Brolin should be in the scenes where Thanatos is directly interacting with the characters. Peter Jackson learned in TWO TOWERS that his actors gave better performances if Andy Serkis was in the scene with them.

I think you mean Titan near Saturn. Apocalypse is where Darkseid is from (also from DC Comics, not Marvel).

Easy mistake.

Sorry. Guess I threw Apocalypse in as an after thought and didn't explain. I was talking about the next X-men movie.

Darkseid came from Apokolips. :D
Brolin will probably play the role pretty much like Davy Jones from Pirates. The actor is there on set but the CGI will be put on him in post. But then, Rocket Raccoon was motion performed by the director's brother and Bradley Cooper dubbed his voice over his performance. So it's either of that.
