Thanos will finally get his chance to shine in Avengers: Infinity War

04.20.2016

Avengers: Infinity War Thanos Josh Brolin

When Thanos was first introduced to audiences during a post-credit scene in THE AVENGERS, it became clear that Marvel was going to be working towards a galactic-sized brawl with the entirety of the Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes going up against the Mad Titan himself. However, aside from a couple of brief cameos in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, Thanos hasn't had much of an opportunity to make his presence felt. That's all set to change once the two-part AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR rolls around as screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have told The Huffington Post that giving Thanos (Josh Brolin) his time to shine is paramount.

You know, he’s never been the villain in any of the movies. He’s never been the main character in that way, so giving lots of good screen time to Thanos is paramount and pretty fun.

Since we've known for quite some time that Thanos would eventually make his mark on the MCU, Markus and McFreely say that using that fan anticipation has been both a challenge and an advantage.

There’s an aspect of, you know, people know what’s coming, so our challenge is how best are we going to handle this somewhat known quantity. But also he’s barely been touched on. He’s at about 20 seconds of screen time. He hasn’t had an amazing scene. I think it’s an advantage ultimately, right? Because people are anticipating this guy coming in and really delivering the goods. So, I think they’re eager, and we just have to deliver it. We don’t have to convince them that he’s gonna be interesting. We just have to execute what has been teased.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR - PART ONE will hit theaters on May 4, 2018, with PART TWO following on May 3, 2019.

Waited too long

As Psycheoutsteve said below, I just stop caring. Listen, the wait for him to be the main villain is PERFECT. But the wait for him to do anything meaningful has been god awful. In all of these Marvel films, he should have done something...ANYTHING worth talking about by now.

Here's the problem: beyond Loki, the MCU villains have sucked. They've been boring and non-threats. They have been setting up Thanos for a long time now and they have a lot of expectations to hit. I don't have a whole lot of faith that they can actually deliver if only because there may be no way to deliver on the expectations fans have with Thanos. But, I hope I'm wrong. While Loki was great, Thanos has to be incredible. He not only has been shown to be pulling the strings behind pretty much

While Loki was great, Thanos has to be incredible. He not only has been shown to be pulling the strings behind pretty much everything, but is well known in the comics as a massively powerful entity. Everything we've seen in the MCU has been leading up to Infinity War. They may end up being good movies, but if they aren't great, better than anything that's come before, then it will be disappointing if only because of the hype leading up to the films.

This whole build up to this villain has lasted so long that I no longer care. Oh yeah, that big blue guy from that end credit scene from how many movies ago? There's build up and then there's dragging your feet.

Please don't let us down

If you've been building up on a villain for over a decade, I expect him to shatter expectations and cause major physical and psychological damage to all the heroes. If Thanos turns out to be treated like every other Marvel villain besides Loki, then Marvel--despite its financial success--would be seen as a failure in my eyes.

The final seconds they show every marvel film with just the titles. You look at it, whether you loved all the movies, or just some, nothing like what they've done has ever been attempted much less accomplished. You can hate the Marvel machine and how it churns stuff out, but you look at the time they took to craft a living breathing world where superheroes are normal, and its nothing short of a miracle. That "time" is exactly why Marvel works, and that time is exactly why BVS was a clusterfuck

I am thankful Marvel took years to develop the MCU before Avengers released, and I'm equally thankful they are taking a decade before Thanos's Infinity War. Marvel isn't afraid to wait decades for a payoff, that's both good business and good storytelling.

It took years for marvel because the generic public didn't know or care about the characters like DC. They had to do solo films for these guys first to remind the public who they were. Basically hulk and Spider-Man were the only household names and maybe captain America. Iron man and Thor were pretty low on the caring scale. Want proof well Marvel didn't sell the movie rights to them like they did Spider-Man and punisher and xmen and FF.
The Marvel movies were also not going for years like

The Marvel movies were also not going for years like DC. Everyone knows superman lex Lois batman Alfred Wonder Woman etc. You can use shorthand when putting them in a movie because the general public already is familiar with them. Even aquaman is a known character to most people.
I'm not saying one company is better than another or anything. I love them both. And I'm ok with fast tracking JLA.
I don't need origin stories for flash and aquaman etc. If/when they do them il be ok with it, but I can do without it.
If avengers came out as the first movie, before iron man and cap and Thor etc, I would have still loved it the same.
I don't think I love it more because I saw solo movies first.

It would have been really interesting to all of these Marvel/DC people comparing both properties if DC had done the Marvel formula first before Marvel established it with Iron Man. I wonder if these so called fans would still be complaining.

Yeah i am not saying that wopolopolus is wrong or that DC is right. For me personally i dont need a lot of movies to build up to something. If the Avengers movie - exact same cast, etc, the exact same movie came out with NONE of the movies before it, it would still be awesome.
i know people who went to see dark knight BEFORE they say batman begins. No one was knocking the movie - and that is a direct sequel - i asked them why did you see dark knight before begins and they said "well we know

whatever, its all good - more superhero movies to come!

First off I'm not some marvel person. I wanted BVS to be good, but it sucked donkey dong. I didn't think MoS was terrible, I thought it was decent with room for improvement, which at least a couple of the Marvel movies have also been (IM2&3, Thor TDW, AOU). I love Green Lantern, I love Martian Manhunter, I love the Flash. Not a Superman fan personally, and Batman I like but to me he's a little over saturated in both comics and movies/tv, so I tend to just check out. Flash is tied for top comic

Flash is tied for top comic show for me with Daredevil. So just because I was honest and right about DC rushing to play catch up instead of taking their time, doesn't mean what I said can be dismissed as the rantings of some marvel fanboi just because you love DC. BVS and the upcoming JL are rushed. They took little to no time to lay the groundwork and its showing. And they are competing comic book companies and properties sharing a similar theme (heroes at odds with each other) within two months of each other. They deserve to be compared, because that comparison and competition will hopefully drive both studios to produce better products. Yes there are annoying marvel fanbois who act like marvel can do no wrong, but there are equally as annoying dc fanbois that try to derail any comparisons because of how bad their passion projects are sucking wind.

Flash and DD are tied for me too.
I am too much of a fan. I tend to be very easy on superhero movies. I didn't like the new FF movie or iron man 3. Other than that I am a sucker for them.
I'm not immune to the bad stuff but I tend to like it anyway. People watch superman 4 and say it's silly and whatever. I watch it and see Christopher reeve being the embodiment of the character. Same with part 3 and I love all 4 of those.
Even batman and robin. I see it as the Adam west era come to the

Bvs I see superman and batman fighting and parademons. I mean that's pretty cool.
Ps not a big fan of force awakens tho.
But original trilogy is the best.

I am inclined to believe that Snyder made a decent 3 hr movie and then screwed himself when he edited it down to 2 and a half hours. He should have cut the dream sequences instead. Say what you will about Fant4stic, at an hour and a half it didn't drag.

Actually Martin I'm not going to disagree with you there. While his 3hr cut might not have been truly mind blowing, I have zero doubt his original cut was way better. It literally looked like BVS was 5 different movies thrown in a blender on puree to try to make a cohesive movie. That could very well be that it was chopped to crap in the editing room. The entire movie felt rushed to me, and it felt like some scenes just abruptly ended when they should have gone on a little longer or had a setup

Maybe when the bluray comes out we'll see some of the cut stuff and get a better idea.

And for the actual battes in Infinity War, like the first Avengers, I hope we get to see some of the Avengers go head to head with him by themselves. Primarily, I would love to see Hulk, Thor, and Captain America all have their own solo shot to take down Thanos, and would love to also see Drax have his own moment with Thanos as well after the whole set up in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Have you read any of the infinity trilogy. Just asking coz I don't want you to get your hopes up. Thanos armed with the gauntlet just thinks captain America out of existence. Like no one can fight him.
Anyway it's Adam warlock I need to see. He is the hero of the trilogy and my second favorite Marvel character.

was just about to say that. Soloist have you ever read anything Marvel? No one can go toe to toe with Thanos. like J-man said, he thought Cap out of existence. Anyone going toe to toe with Thanos is like you going toe to toe with Dr Manhattan. It goes [link] Beyond him being physically strong man.

I just hope we get to see a bit of his upcoming destruction against the MCU in Thor: Ragnarok. Would be a great starting point to begin his reckoning and would set the tone for the rest of phase three leading up to the events of Inifity War.

Nah. That would be too much too soon and way too much overexposure. He's going to be in parts 1 AND 2 of Infinity War, so those two movies should be plenty enough.
