That rumored Men in Black/21 Jump Street movie is really happening

04.30.2015

Looks like the sequel to 22 JUMP STREET is going to spoof shared movie universes as The Wrap has confirmed that Sony is moving forward with a crossover between the Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum buddy cop series and the scifi comedy MEN IN BLACK. This news comes on the heels of the reveal that the studio is working on a female-centric spin-off of 22 JUMP STREET.

The JUMP STREET/MEN IN BLACK crossover was first revealed thanks to the Sony hacking scandal, but screenwriter Rodney Rothman confirmed it was in the early stages of development. It does not appear clear whether the spin-off will be independent of the other films in the series or even if it will take the place of 23 JUMP STREET. I would be willing to bet that the crossover will end up being the next movie in the franchise and, if all works out, they can continue either series with no creative limits whatsoever. Imagine the possibilities!

It remains unknown at this point whether any MEN IN BLACK stars would appear in the crossover, but I find it hard to believe that Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones would want to play second fiddle to either Hill or Tatum. So, is a movie even worth seeing without those guys? What would the context be? The idea is so batshit crazy that I am not ruling it out entirely, I am just not sure it will work.

23 JUMP STREET currently has no release date but stay tuned for more details on both spin-off projects.

Wow. Just… Wow.

Dumb. As. Fuck. Ing. Shit. Let me repeat, DUMB AS FUCKING SHIT! Sounds like a terribly bad way to begin to suck the life out of and/or flat-out ruin an otherwise awfully good franchise. Ugh...

Give it a chance. I can see this oddly working and being fun.

It will be an interesting way to end the trilogy. They did the same thing twice now and for the third they just say fuck it, lets bring aliens into the mix.

I would love to see a scene where we find out Franco Jr is an alien or something. Or the drugs (WyFy?) were laced with an alien substance. They could easily mix in aliens if they tried.

This sounds absolutely ridiculous to me. MIB is a dead franchise, let it go. And I have no idea why Jonah Hill would be interested in this project in the slightest.

So Channing Tatum will be in a Men in Black movie AND a Ghostbusters movie?

Do they go for an "R" rating though?

I'm pretty sure this movie will end with Jonah and Channing getting their memory cleared of any events from this film by one of the MIB devices. Then they can decide to continue with solo Jump Street films without having to explain anything from the cross over.

1. Phil Lord and Chris Miller need to come back for this one. I know they are busy working on The Flash, The Lego Movie Sequel, and anything else they are producing coming up, but they are the only ones who can take an idea this crazy and instantly make it a must see. Them or Edgar Wright.

2. I get that Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones wouldnt want to play second fiddle to these guys, but at least ehy can have cameos the same way Johnny Depp, Holly Peete, and Peter DeLouis had in the 21 Jump

3. Emma Thompson could very well be in this movie

Men in Black needs this to happen much more than 21 Jump Street needs to.

It's a genius idea

take one franchise that's basically dead and pair it with one that was on the verge of getting stale. Boom, you have a fresh take. I like this idea so much more than all the other trends going on right now. Jonah Hill just needs to cut the weight again b/c he's a blimp right now.

I'm actually okay with this. Given how well the self awareness comedy in 22 JS was done, I could see this working - Tatum and Hill's characters accidentally stumble on an alien while on some batshit crazy case they're on. Anywayz, lets face it...Sony need something massive in terms of a cinematic universe franchise given the gigantic failure that was their spidey cinematic universe.

The first MIB was amusing, the second mildly so, and the third was merely OK. Another time to the trough will run this franchise into the ground.

If you think about the premise set up for the original MiB, the cross-over makes perfect sense. Smith's character is just beginning to get a little too old for this alien shit, Tommy Lee Jones effectively wrapped up his story in that universe and can therefore be retired (character-wise) so you just re-boot with a very self-aware beat by beat re-make of the original MiB but in the vein of Tatum and Hill's dynamic rather than Smith-Jones' rapport. Smith becomes a sort of Zedd-J hybrid or you get

Smith becomes a sort of Zedd-J hybrid or you get an age make up advanced Josh Brolin to cameo for a nice little chunk of change (he made $5M for MiB3, signaling he'd "arrived)"

Umm, no. That would NOT be a crossover, that would be just a completely new MIB reboot with the same two actors that just so happen to also be in the Jump Street franchise with one another. Dumb.
