The 2009 Golden Schmoes nominees are announced!

02.19.2010

The official nominations for the 9th Annual JoBlo.com Movie Awards (aka the Golden Schmoes) have been compiled and the official voting will begin on Monday (February 22 - March 4), so sharpen your fingernails and get ready to vote for your faves! The winners will be announced on Friday, March 5th, just two days before those darn "Oscar thingies" are handed out (which are getting later and later every year, it seems).

Directly below are the films which received the most nominations. I was personally surprised to see the top film with more nominations than any other film in the history of the Golden Schmoes (the previous record-holder was THE DARK KNIGHT with 16 nominations). The new record-holder is now INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS! (yeah, I thought it would be AVATAR as well). Four other films fared really well including WATCHMEN (another surprise for me), DISTRICT 9, STAR TREK, AVATAR (there it is!) and ZOMBIELAND.

MOST NOMINATIONS
Inglourious Basterds (18 nominations)
Watchmen (13 nominations)
District 9 (11 nominations)
Star Trek (9 nominations)
Avatar (9 nominations)
Zombieland (7 nominations)

Other films with a handful of nominations include THE HANGOVER (6), UP (5), THE HURT LOCKER (5), 500 DAYS OF SUMMER (5) and MOON (5).

Remember that each person can vote only once for the Golden Schmoes, but you needn't be a member of our site to do so. We will also be running our 10TH ANNUAL OSCAR PREDICTION CONTEST this year, so stay tuned for that as well. See previous years' GOLDEN SCHMOES winners below, along with this year's crop of nominations per category. Thanks for participating!!

Tarantino

Another movie that I liked with the Tarantino touch was Hell Ride, which he produced. The original From Dusk Till Dawn was pretty good too, as well as Four Rooms. And don't forget Killing Zoe....

Tarantino

I thought Basterds was a great flic. I actually like all of Tarantino's movies, I think he's a step ahead of the regular fodder that Hollywood produces. However, my 2 favorite Tarantino movies often get overlooked based on the fact that he didn't direct them (he wrote the script though). True Romance is the first great of those two, with Natural Born Killers being one of my all-time favorite movies. It's just epic!

There's certainly nothing wrong with wanting to be happy. Is there? Or do you strive to be miserable?

And I said nothing against opinion. It's just everyone who blazes through here "sharing" their opinion seems to think that their inner monologue sounds so cool and "bad ass" that, by the time it shows up on the screen for others to read, it sounds angry, forceful and spiteful. A negative opinion doesn't have to include knocking other peoples opinions and tastes.

And I would love to

And I would love to know what "The necessary criteria needed to analyze film" is. Sounds impressive. Perhaps something that the rest of us could benefit from since you think none of us have it.

"The necessary criteria needed to analyze film"

I was trying to say, that to analyze or critique something, be it film or otherwise. You can't say "ooooh everyone else likes it so it's over-hyped". That is half the posts I read here. This movie or that movie is over-rated. Go in with a clean mind, don't dislike something because everyone else does and you wanna be different.......that's ignorant and childish.

And I'm not saying this to you, I mean this to anyone using that thought process.

To miguel_montes: The category is not for original screenplay. It's for "best screenplay."

Do you not grasp how much thought and writing went into that film? The scale of it is off the charts. I never said it should win, but it deserves respect.

And Noct : Negative posts? The way you put it it's bad to have an opinion that is not uplifting and friendly, go post at a Disney forum "if you wanna be happy for the rest of your life."

Don Rickles, Woody Allen, Albert Brooks, have you

And you think "Avatar" is one of the best screenplays of 2009? I do grasp efforts in story-telling, in almost every movie, but the Avatar script isn't all that. Although it is nice, as is the movie itself, it is not in the least as well written as "Inglorious Basterds", for example. Some of the dialogs in that movie, like Hans Landa talking with the french dairy farmer at the beginning, or the tavern scene, are amazingly well-written. I want you to give me examples, in Avatar, of such

Here are the links for both scripts:

Read them, like I did, and then we'll talk some more.

Some of these nominations make me scratch my head.

How does the Comedian not get a nod for coolest character of the year, you must be joking......no pun intended. James T Kirk is cool, since when? Try NEVER.

And the nomination for best quote from Inglorious Basterds is "That's a Bingo"? WTF?

"Arivaderchi." That was probably the best and funniest part of the whole movie, in a movie with compelling and intense dialogue and sharp wit, we get a nod for "that's a bingo"?

Taken didn't

Taken didn't get a nod for "Good Luck"? Another shocker.

And Avatar doesn't get a nod for best screenplay? That is a god damn disgrace.

Let's see, Sigourney Weaver gets a best supporting actress nod (Don't ask me why, she did better acting in Alien: Resurrection) and no Avatar Screenplay nod? WOW.....

Watchmen and Terminator were dissapointments? Looking at these nominations I can see why, bad taste and lack of the necessary criteria needed to analyze film: [link]"

You're kidding about the whole Avatar nod for best screenplay, right? RIGHT?
I loved the movie as well, but the screenplay is just "Pocahontas" or "Dances With Wolves" in another setting.

At least the screenplays nominated were original...

I couldn't tell if this post was sarcastic or if it meant every word it said. It seems rather standard amongst the negative posts though. More anger than thought.

Ok I feel I need to stick up for Basterds here. I see a lot of bitching about the movie here and nothing to really back it up besides basically calling everyone Quentin fanboys. That argument doesn't even hold up unless you want to consider the committee for the Oscars and the Golden Globes to be Quentin fanboys as well. The movie was nominated for best picture for both of them and nominated for best director and best supporting actor, whom is basically a lock to win the Oscar. Face it,

Schmoes loved it, the critics loved it, and so did the academy. To say that we all chose it just because it was made by Tarantino is ridiculous. Sorry if you guys didn't like it but it seemed to get a lot of praise outside of the JoBlo community as well.

I finally got the chance to watch it last night and if I saw it in 2009, it would have easily been my favourite movie of the year. I know I said I just watched it last night, but I'm watching it again right now. Just an awesome movie!

Three comments. 1) Alright! Trick 'r Treat got its props! Now, I must decide b/t T'rT or Drag Me.
2) Dr.Frankenstein is right. Where is Halloween 2? After all the debate, the film is neither over- nor underrated, neither best nor worst picture nor director nor nut'n. I guess Schmoes could not decide whether H2 was afoot or--horseback (hee-hee, snort-snort, and you thought Mikey was sick & brutal). And, for my fellow H2 fans, let us get our microphones . . . . "LOOOVE HURTS. LOVE SCAARS. . . ."

What if we do the next in a PG-13 3-D reboot w/ the Twilight cast?
3) Great list. JoBlo asked us to nominate the films that we value and love. And, we did.

Was G.I. Joe that bad? I thought it was a great action movie. If anything Halloween 2 was waaaaay worse.

I had an unbearable time with G.I.Joe. No fun at all. Boring and for a franchise that's based entirely on unique characters (The toys were all pretty different) The designs were uninspired. The action was alright at times but between the action was bad acting. Worse than bad acting and some of the worst dialogue since "The Day after Tomorrow"

I don't mean to be rude, just responding with why I couldn't handle G.I.Joe. It was basically made for 10 year olds who had no idea what the 80's cartoon

I just avoided Halloween. I knew better for both of these movies but had to try for G.I.Joe. I couldn't finish.

I completely agree! Halloween 2 was horrendous! Such a disappointment. I on the other hand thought G.I. was cheesy but fun all the while.

I like the Basterds, but I can't help but think that we are going to see Avatar win most of its awards. I just think it is so overhyped. That said it does look visually stunning, but I think people should just let it go.

I'm pleased with this years noms, although I do wonder how The Hurt Locker got best picture, actor and director nominations, but didn't get any for best action scene.

Pretty good nominations I guess, it's about what I expected. However, like Monotreme, I'm pumped that Basterds is leading the nom count.

Oh, and it's Christoph WalTz. ;) No worries though, he only has the potential to be the most terrifying villain ever. He won't mind.

Oh, and CrazyDud, I lost a little respect for ya pal.

Why is Black Dynamite not on this list?

Funniest movie of the year by far. Oh, and (500) days of Summer was not actually a comedy. Just sayin.

Not bad

Overall, not bad fellas: Basterds representin' like hell, good for it - if any film deserves a consensus out of the 2009 releases, it's definitely it, so I'm glad to see it as the frontrunner as opposed to Avatar. Nice to see acting noms for the (500) Days of Summer guys - kudos! But a shame that the "expectations vs reality" scene didn't make the cut in its category. Great to see at least some Where the Wild Things Are, Moon and Hurt Locker representation. It's too bad some of the smaller

It's too bad some of the smaller films of the year didn't make the cut - A Serious Man for screenplay, Crazy Heart for acting (Jeff Bridges) - but hey, at least Sandy Bullock didn't get nominated!

And Crazy Dud: Man, you are WAY off. Way, WAY off. Just because a movie got mixed reviews and you think that it was a "heavily flawed adaptation", doesn't mean other people aren't entitled to their opinions. In 2003, Return of the King got the most nominations and wins, more than Kill Bill Vol. 1. Is that also because of the "annoying fanboys"? ROTK won Best Picture at the Oscars that year, btw. I also think your double standard is a little hypocritical: Basterds, Avatar and Watchmen were geared towards the "fanboy audience" but District 9 and Zombieland weren't? Come on, man.

It's a little funny to me to read that Crazy Dud thinks the Schmoes are predictable because of Inglourious Basterds when in the Golden Schmoes forum somebody said that the awards were predictable because everybody would vote for Avatar.

Yeah, everyone has their opinions. Any time someone sees something they disagree with in awards noms, they usually say something like "typical!" or "how predictable!"

HORRIBLY predictable. People make fun of the Academy for their predictability, but the schmoes here are just as predictable.

For one thing, any time there's a year with a new Tarantino film or Scorsese film, it will receive the most nominations. Typical way for undergraduate film buffs to feel like they are important film connoisseurs. Even more annoying . . . 13 for Watchmen . . . seriously? However, having said that, there's a lot of good things to be said for this list, as well. District 9 was awesome, as was Zombieland (for the record, Basterds was great too, but people are definitely giving too much credit to the film; come on, people, it was NOT on the same level as Pulp Fiction, or Reservoir Dogs; not even close).

Up, The Hurt Locker, Moon, and Coraline all deserved more nominations than they received, but hey, those were not from Scorsese, Tarantino, or Mann, and they weren't geared toward the fanboy audience (except maybe Moon), so I know I'm dreaming!

I kind of see what you mean here. However, your arguement is completely ruined when you diss Basterds and then say that District 9 is 'awesome'.

Yeah, I kind of agree with you here, too. I'll admit I liked Basterds, but 3 out of the 5 most memorable scenes in a movie? That's borderline ridiculous.

Oh and Where the Wild Things Are better freaking win for best trailer because the only problem I had with the movie was that it didn't match the complete and utter amazing-ness of the trailer. I watched it like 4 or 5 times the first time it came out and then on a near daily basis for a couple weeks because I just couldn't get enough. The song, the pacing, the emotion captured, it was all perfect.

Tom Hardy should have a nom for Best Actor for his amazing performance in Bronson.

And Fantastic Mr. Fox should win best animation.

Does it mean Alvin and the Chipmunks is overrated as well ?
Because a movie grosses a lot of money doesnt mean its loved, it only means people paid to see it. I did, still hated it. But I see your point.

No Rinko Kikuchi for best supporting actress? For not having any lines it was impossible not to take your eyes off her during her scenes. I'm tired of the Avatar noms for best pic, but I guess since Dances With Wolves won for the same story...

I find it really silly for a movie to be nominated for both Biggest Disappointment and Most Underrated. It's (almost) like having a film nominated for Worst Movie at the Razzies, and Best Movie at the Oscars. I know the forum schmoes voted for the noms, and Watchmen has lots of admirers and also lots of haters, but this shouldn't have been allowed by the staff.

WATCHMEN obviously disappointed some people and was thought to be underrated by others. Why would we disallow that? That's the whole point of the Golden Schmoes!! People get to vote with their opinions.

To DarkElfa

Speaking of armchair critic.

And why are you picking on these two movies? So sad that Avatar hasn't claimed the entire world? I think you need to relax a bit and try to be a bit more objective. That rant is incredibly rude and ignorant. And just because you can't read between the lines of a movie and need it spelled out for you (though reading is clearly not your strong point) as plainly as Avatar did, doesn't mean a movie is no good. There are layers to movies other than just the surface

There are layers to movies other than just the surface story you're watching. Usually. At least with most movies that make it to cinemas.

Trust me, at the end of the Day Avatar will probably win more awards and you can go home happy because clearly what others think means so darn much to you. But it's pretty sad if you're going to cry and sulk over the Golden Schmoes. Don't get me wrong, I love the Golden Schmoes, I nominated and did my part, but I'm not going to cry if my picks don't win. It's entertainment. That's all.

As far as the Schmoes go. I'm stoked!

Why Taken?

I dunno about the US, but in England Taken came out in the summer of 2008! I recognise the fact that it has the BEST line ever, and is an amazing film, but it's not quite released in 2009, is it?

What?! PUBLIC ENEMIES gets nominated for biggest disappointment? Hell no, That was a great old fashioned movie. I was upset when it didnt even get nominated for best set design or costumes for the Oscars. c'mon man!
Also, for the Best Line of the Year Award, "That's a Bingo"!! was not nearly as good as "Bonjorno" from Aldo Raines.

I predict that as sure as the armchair critics at JoBlo would award Quentin an Oscar for squatting and crapping in their laps that they'll award nearly everything to Inglorious Bastards and District 9. D9 was a good film but Inglorious was Quentin's worst to date aside from the abortion that was Grind House. I do not understand why the film nerds lose their fucking minds over Quentin like they do. Half the film was boring ass subtitles and the other half was nothing more than an excuse to watch a Jewish guy club a Nazi to death and empty an apparently endless clip into Hitler's face at close range. Neither are reason enough to make or watch a film and certainly not enough to garner this kind of pathetic hero worship.
Quenton = Over-fucking-rated.

District 9 wasn't all that either, stop trying so hard to stand out from the main stream by nominating also-ran films as award winners.

Damn, that's a dumb opinion concerning subtitles.
To say you didn't like the movie is one thing, but saying you found it boring because you have to read... How lazy are you, really? Is this a typical american reaction? I sure hope not, but these types of idiotic opinions always come from the US... wonder why?

You sir, should be ashamed. You have no right to call yourself a movie fan.

Well, my opinion is my opinion. I have no issues with Subtitled films but this was practically marketed as an action film and it turned out to be half fake history epic and half Quentin's typical fodder and it was way over rated. I'm aware that these are voted on by the fans and not Joblo and that's who my rant was directed at. Pointing out that my picture is creepy is more childish than my rant.

Blaming the marketing is a pretty lame reach. Everyone knows Quentin Tarantino films are loaded with long scenes of dialog. And your opinion is your opinion, but at least be consistent. You complain about "boring ass subtitles" and then claim to have no issues with them. Which is it? Your entire post comes of as a rant for the sake of ranting. PeJota is right. You DO need a hug.
